In 2003, Joan Hornig combined her love of jewelry and design with her business skills and experience with non-profit organizations by merging them into a philanthropically-driven company – Joan Hornig Jewelry (JHJ). Raised in the Midwest, Joan began her career as a professional fundraiser for her alma maters Harvard University and Columbia Business School. Thereafter she embarked on a highly successful 20 years on Wall Street until she was moved to pursue a different calling by the world changing events of 9/11. Joan incorporated her belief that philanthropy can be a lifestyle and changed professional direction. Using her knowledge of art history, decorative design and inspiration from world travel, Joan began working with local New York City artisans to produce her jewelry designs. Now, 15 years later, Joan has been recognized and honored by companies, non-profits, educational institutions and the media for both her designs and efforts on behalf of others having instituted a unique model where customers designate a charity to receive 100% of her profit on each piece they purchase. The National Jewelry Institute selected JHJ to be part of the first Contemporary Jewelry Designer Showcase on display at The Forbes Galleries in New York, and showcased JHJ in their 2009 Paris Exhibition as part of Paris Fall Fashion week. In April 2012, the New York Stock Exchange honored Joan’s philanthropic model by inviting her to ring the closing bell. In 2014, Joan was the designer honoree at the FIT Foundation Annual Awards Gala and also received the NECO Ellis Island Medal of Honor. In 2015, Joan was honored by United Cerebral Palsy of New York City with the Women in Business Award, and in 2016 by the Museum of Art and Design (MAD) for her jewelry designs as well as being honored with the Women’s Entrepreneurship Day Pioneer Award. To date, Joan has donated over $1 million to more than 900 worthy initiatives around the world selected by her customers. Education, medical research, social services, the arts, animal rights and environmental protection have all benefitted. Limited edition pieces, designed exclusively for organizations such as UNICEF, Circle of Women, HELP USA, ASPCA, the Girls Scouts of America, and Haitian relief, continue to make a lasting difference. First ladies Laura Bush and Michele Obama have given her work to visiting dignitaries, and Joan’s work continues to be a favorite gift from the US State Department. Joan serves on the Boards of the Fashion Institute of Technology and the Museum of Art and Design and holds a B.A. in Fine Arts from Harvard College and an MBA from Columbia Business School.
