On behalf of the Library Board of Trustees, I’m thrilled to announce the launch of the Library’s strategic planning process. Over the next few months, we’ll be working with ReThinking Libraries to gather valuable community input through interviews with Library patrons, local business owners, and school leaders and faculty. We’ll also be conducting surveys of Library cardholders in various formats to better understand what matters most to you—whether it’s our services, programs, or collection. Keep an eye on your email and our social media for survey links; we’d greatly appreciate it if you could take a few minutes to share your thoughts and experiences with us. Your feedback is vital as we shape the Library’s mission, vision, and roadmap for the next four years. Our goal is to have the plan approved by the Library Board in August 2025.
We’re excited to hear from you!
Deepika Thiagarajan President, Library Board of Trustees

Celebrate National Library Week with Us!
National Library Week is an annual celebration highlighting the valuable role libraries, librarians and library workers play in transforming lives and strengthening our communities.
Enter our Bookmark Contest!
During the month of March, we’ll have forms at all the service desks inviting patrons to submit a bookmark design celebrating the National Library Week theme, “Drawn to the Library.” Four winning designs will be chosen, two adult and two youth, a different design revealed each day of National Library Week, April 24- 28.
Watch our social media and enewsletters to find out what else we’re doing to commemorate
National Library Week in Park Ridge.
Monday, April 24: Right to Read Day, a day for readers, advocates, and library lovers to take action to protect, defend and celebrate the right to read.
Tuesday, April 25: National Library Workers Day, a day for Library staff, users, administrators and Friends groups to recognize the valuable contributions made by all Library workers.

Reader Services Librarians Grace W. and Rachel are bringing a new book discussion category to the Spring program lineup: Science Fiction and Fantasy.
Rachel credits her colleague with the idea:
Grace brought it up and I am so glad she did!” she said. “I’ve loved both genres since I was a kid, and I think there are many out there that do, too. It will be a great book group for avid science fiction and fantasy fans as well as for anyone wanting to expand their reading options.”
According to Publisher’s Weekly, adult fantasy sales skyrocketed 85.2 percent over the first six months of 2023 thanks to a huge increase in interest in romantasy (the combining of Romance and Fantasy genres). Combined with increases of about 20 percent each in the science fiction and suspense/thriller areas, unit sales of adult fiction rose 6.3 percent in the first half of 2024.
“I love that sci-fi and fantasy are getting more and more buzz— thank you romantasy—which is great because it’s not just about aliens or space battles,” said Grace. “I think there is something for everyone and it’s showing!”
See page 4! for details about which books will be on the roster for Spring, and details about other discussions happening this season.
Book discussions will be at the Library in the Third Floor Meeting Room OR available live over Zoom. Choose how you would like to join and sign up on our website or by calling 847-720-3280. Books are available two weeks before the discussion at the Reader Services desk.
