Brief Outline: The intention of this studio is to develop a multitude of notions, approaches, positions and arguments with reference to interior techniques and its implications on the interior design practice. Here interior technique is defined as “A method, tool and medium that modifies, alters, conceals, exposes an interior element, thus transforming the transformable quality of the space.” The studio offers an opportunity to develop a design position in different contexts by questioning preconceived notions of interior design. It emphasizes the relationship between Interior techniques and its expression, identity and design outcome. The first four weeks are part of the common foundation program, where students from all streams work together to develop common skills and abilities. The later part of the studio is largely divided into two modules: the first module builds an argument on interior techniques through existing projects and the second module intends to develop a systematic approach to the application of the argument in three different contexts. It is an opportunity to develop an individual design position for disparate sites keeping the program constant.

Learning Outcomes: After completing this studio unit, the student will be able to: • Ability to develop a systematic argument/position/ approach on the interdependence between interior techniques and practice. • Ability to translate/represent the design argument/ position/approach through 3- dimensional and material based outcomes. • Ability to organize and evaluate the programmatic and pragmatic potential of derived design position. • Ability to build a design vocabulary and test it through the selected context (site/program).

Week 01-02 | FD PG Common Exercises

Objectory Process: The Geometrical Compass is studied mainly through its sequence of assembly and importance of each component. A pair of compasses, also known simply as a compass, is a technical drawing instrument that can be used for inscribing circles or arcs. As dividers, they can also be used as tools to measure distances, in particular on maps. Compasses can be used for mathematics, drafting, navigation and other purposes. Compasses are usually made of metal or plastic, and consist of two parts connected by a hinge which can be adjusted to allow the changing of the radius of the circle drawn. Typically one part has a spike at its end, and the other part a pencil, or sometimes a pen. Knurled wheel is the mechnaism that governs the adjustment of legs to obtain precise measurements. Flat Head Filister Screws holds the legs as well as various attachments. These screws are made from stainless steel to avoid rustification with 6 threads at the botom. They are fastened along the threads of the object and manufactured through thread rolling with matt finish. The needle made from stainless steel is a removable attachment fixed with round cover screw.

Factory Process: This floor mounted magazine stand has been designed and developed with three principles in the group of three, that were derieved from the indiviual ideas in the beginning. The three principles are: • Cantelivered Top •Simple Geometry •Frame Structure Hence, the final output showcases the amalgamation of the three derived principles with the provided material kit. Week 05 | FD PG Module 01

Developing the Argument Brief: In a project, elements define a language to alter the form. This form is not necessarily an exterior element, rather it should be looked at how does it envelop a volume to give a meaningful definition to it. The envelope consists of alteration and modification of spatial and volume planes that are a combination of material techniques as well as the form of elements. The property of a material and its technique must reflect the aspects of temporariness and disassembly to achieve flexibility in an interior space. Also, this altered and modified material acts as a module for the formation of an element that will probably have its nature of repetition. The repetition with the nature of temporariness will lead to the outcome of flexibility. Further, this outcome will contribute to a larger attribute of space i.e. transformation in the transition of different functions. Output – Flexibility in a space to have a transformation in the transition at a functional level. Ways of Achieving – Alteration of material, the temporariness of a material, modifying the volume of space/plane, applying material techniques, assembly-disassembly of an element, repetition of elements, placement in layout at a spatial level. “Flexibility in space - at planar and volume level can be achieved by assembly and dissembly of elements ”
















Ideating Roles of an Interior Designer


Week 06-07 | FD PG Module 02

Ideating Role 1 of Interior Designer Brief: The Argument Flexibility in space – at planar and volume level can be achieved by assembly-disassembly of elements. This can be elaborated as the process of coming together and falling apart. The term, Flexibility in space will refer to the aspects of the following things: - Its translation in layout - Alteration and modification as envelope - Also, this altered and modified envelope acting as a module for the formation of an element with premutation and combination of materials. Interior Techniques Assembly-disassembly of an element Alteration of material + applying material techniques Modifying the volume of space/plane Placement in layout at a spatial level. Site - Mill Owner’s Association Program / Function of the Space: An Exhibition space for school students that will function for six hours a day. This space will provide an experience to dive into the world of dream machines with spatial and visual flexibility along with an experiential journey.

Ideating Role 2 of Interior Designer Brief:

ARGUEMENT - Flexibility in space – at planar and volume level can be achieved by assembly-disassembly of elements. Master Architect - Kengo Kuma In order to form the assembly and disassembly of elements, the stacking and interlocking of elements has been adopted for the design. Oriku form of joinery has been experimented which stands strong without the use of nails or any other mechanism. Alternate staggering of components creates an element with form that act as ceiling, column, partition etc. as whole. The concept here is to create an experience that is focused on the Machines of Da Vinci Code with a little play of light and Shadow. The entire space is designed in a way which portrays the perception of carved out space having continuous elements. This continuity creates a journey with seamless yet interesting experience. Each component is executed in the section of 60x60 mm that repeats in order to achieve organic form. These elements are placed in such a manner that they create an organic circulation for the user. This circulation guides the movement along with the play of filtered light penetrating through the grid. The transition in the space is a woven journey that interacts with the user through various form of elements. The two double height spaces provide an opportunity to experiments the elements with larger volume and thus the interaction with inside-outside of the site performs different roles as porosity and transparency. The flooring has been kept a homogeneous constant one, concrete, that complements the existing facade as well as concentrate the focus on the elements. The little gap towards the glass windows tries to act as balance between the elements and machines. The Flexibility of detached elements with creating the notion of free-flowing space is achieved through multiplication of Oriku Joinery.
