Welcome to the first annual Drive Electric Tennessee (DET) Momentum Summit! We’re excited to host this new event in Knoxville, and we can’t wait to share this experience with you!

Drive Electric Tennessee is dedicated to bringing together passionate stakeholders who want to see us reach our initiative’s goal of 200,000 electric vehicles on Tennessee roads by 2028. This year’s Momentum Summit is a fantastic opportunity for those interested in EVs as well as seeing the market grow in our state to learn, collaborate, and give input to DET about the direction of the initiative.

On behalf of our event planning team, I hope that you enjoy the DET Momentum Summit as an interactive workshop with a hint of conference. I wish for meaningful connections to be made among all of you and that you are able to learn more about the EV environment in Tennessee, as well as contribute to the larger conversation about EVcentric projects we collectively need to undertake.

We have a packed agenda and you will hear from leaders and subject matter experts striving to accelerate EV adoption. You will meet people from across the state - and even the nation - in various industries who are working to promote all facets of EV growth.

We hope you find a way to contribute to DET’s everyday mission of identifying solutions to the barriers to electrifying our communities for Tennesseans and all the beautiful places and spaces we call home.

Stay electric, y’all ⚡

2022 DET Momentum Summit & TN Sustainable Transportation Forum & Expo 6

Welcome to the 8th annual Tennessee Sustainable Transportation Forum & Expo (STF&E) at the University of Tennessee Student Union in beautiful Knoxville. We are glad you are here!

The 2022 STF&E is being planned and will be co-hosted by the Tennessee Clean Fuels Coalitions, Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC), and Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT). After moving the event to virtual delivery in 2020 and 2021, we are thrilled to host our colleagues, friends, and newcomers in-person once again in 2022.

STF&E is focused on reshaping what is possible in transportation and mobility in Tennessee, through conversations on the latest research, technology, planning, and policy developments. This year’s STF&E is particularly timely, as we will take a closer look at equity and justice in the transportation space, and discuss how we can ensure transportation is sustainable, resilient, and multi-modal in nature and meets the needs of ALL Tennesseans. A diverse and deeply knowledgeable group of panelists and speakers from across our gorgeous state and the greater U.S. will highlight best practices to transform transportation systems.

On Tuesday, we will kick-off our forum with an amazing lineup of sessions, ranging from topics such as women in sustainable transportation to mobility and transportation justice. Additionally, we will be focusing on issues of access to transportation and community displacement and gentrification in sustainable transportation projects. Following the speaker sessions, an alternative fuel vehicle and equipment showcase—complete with the opportunity to test drive some of today’s most exciting alternative fuel vehicle options—will be held outside the UT Student Union. Finally, STF&E attendees can enjoy their evening at a networking reception hosted by the East Tennessee Clean Fuels Coalition at the famous Neyland Stadium. Go Vols!

2022 DET Momentum Summit & TN Sustainable Transportation Forum & Expo 8

The forum will continue Wednesday with several more sessions. Our program concludes with an awards luncheon that honors the 2022 winners of the Tennessee Sustainable Transportation Awards (organized by TDEC and TDOT) as well as inductees into the Tennessee Green Fleets program (organized by Tennessee Clean Fuels). We will recognize some of the major initiatives that promote sustainable transportation throughout Tennessee, including projects for fleet improvements, building or road design, enhanced multimodal mobility, education and outreach campaigns and more. All STF&E attendees are encouraged to join and help us honor our award recipients.

On behalf of the event planning team, we hope you enjoy the conference and your time in Knoxville! We look forward to learning how you apply the insights and knowledge shared at STF&E to advance equitable and sustainable transportation in your community.

CLEANER MOBILITY, GREENER CONFERENCE

TDEC, TDOT, and TNCleanFuels believe that being environmentally friendly shouldn’t just be part of your work – it should be part of your life! Below are some of the steps we are taking with the UT Student Union to keep this event clean and green. Please join us by being mindful of your recycling, transportation, food waste, and paper use during the conference. Have suggestions on how we can make this event even better? Contact us at TDEC.OEP@tn.gov.

RECYCLING

Recycling bins are provided for paper, aluminum cans, and recyclable plastics around the UT Student Union. Please place all your recyclable items in the appropriate bins.

WISER TRANSPORTATION OPTIONS

Downtown Knoxville has two bike and scooter share options - Bird and Link - and service area extends to the UT campus. Additionally, Knoxville Area Transit (KAT) offers a free trolley service with several routes that service the downtown, UT, and the Old City areas. The Orange Line is your best bet for this event; just get on and ride - no tickets required!

REDUCING FOOD WASTE

We strive to order an accurate amount of food as is needed for our conference attendees. Any leftovers from this event will find a home on the UT Campus or nearby, helping us divert food waste from local landfills.

REDUCED PRINTING & PAPER

We developed this Pocket Guide as an information-packed resource that can be retained and referenced for your own transportation activities in the future, replacing loose-leaf paper and folder agendas that are often disposed following a conference event. We also leveraged digital communications and marketing to promote this event in place of paper mailers and other printed outreach tools.

SPEAKER PRESENTATIONS

To reduce waste, event organizers will not provide printed copies of speaker presentations. Following receipt of speaker permission, presentations will be made available on the conference website.

Stan Johnson

Stanley is a native of Black River, Jamaica. His family emigrated to the United States when he was very young and they seasonally travelled from Florida to New York picking fruit. Stan moved to Knoxville with a football scholarship to UT in 1989. Due to an injury his freshman year, he lost his scholarship and dropped out of school. He then enrolled in historically black Knoxville College, earning a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration in 1995. However, instead of just assuming they knew the answers, they started a Listening Project, knocking on doors and asking questions. They found out that the most pressing issue was unaffordable utility bills, thus SEEED (Socially Equal Energy Efficient Development) was formed. Now 14 years later, they have a cadre of young adults knocking on doors, fulfilling multiple government contracts to help our low income community, and also graduating about 20-30 students per year with the skills they need to find sustainable employment.
