Types of Air Filters

Air filters are frequently the most neglected component of our HVAC system.

Of course, its primary job is to filter the air that circulates through your heating and cooling system. Filters catch and trap a wide range of particles and contaminants that might affect your space’s health and comfort. The airborne components can be cleanly eliminated with the use of a filter.

Because application requirements fluctuate, there are several filtering methods to select from. Among the most common varieties are ionic, HEPA, carbon, and UV light air filters.

Ionic Air Filter

Ionic air filters, often known as air ionisers, operate on electricity. They often generate negatively charged ions, also known as anions, which attract particles in the air in a manner akin to static electricity. As the particles come into contact with the anions, they are deionized and evacuated from the air stream. Ionic air filters are widely used in commercial air filters.

HEPA Filter Types

This kind is more efficient than the previous one. It is capable of removing up to 99.97% of air pollutants. HEPA is an abbreviation for high-efficiency particulate absorption. The filters are generally comprised of fibreglass fibre mats that catch particles as they travel through them. The efficiency of a HEPA filter is determined by the diameter of the fibre and the thickness of the filter.

Carbon Air Filters

Carbon is first treated with oxygen, which increases the absorbency of the pores. After this process, carbon is believed to be active since it can quickly collect particles and retain odours. Carbon air filters use activated carbon to trap pollutants and gases and may also filter cigarette smoke. As the air passes through the filter, the activated carbon absorbs and neutralises odours and pollutants.

UV Light Air Filter Types

UV light air filters utilise the reaction that happens when titanium dioxide is exposed to UV light. Hazardous particles, such as mould and bacteria, are neutralised when they come into contact with the photochemical process. Because high-intensity UV is powerful enough to break down most carbon-based organic contaminants, UV light air filters are an appropriate complement to HEP filters in medical applications. The effectiveness of UV light filters is determined by the length of exposure (how long the air stream is exposed to the light) and the intensity of the light.
