I was raised in Bettendorf, Iowa and graduated from Pratt Institute in New York in 1963 with a BFA degree. My passion for art started with my fantasy for the wild American west as a child of five. That passion is still my focus with the majority of my studio painting in Missoula, Montana, my home with my wife, Irene, for over thirty years. The paintings in this book are impressions from field sketches I have made on my travels. The sketching process for me is the activity I look forward to the most no matter where my travels take me. My work may be seen and purchased through my website: www.pirnieartshowroom.com.

Philanthropy Ellerman House is committed to the people and environments of South Africa. The hotel supports Penreach, an award-winning program that improves the quality of education in disadvantaged rural communities. It’s also a partner hotel with Great Plains Conservation, which seeks to fund threatened environments through low-impact tourism. Philanthropy Singita Grumeti Reserves plays an active role in conserving the wildlife that make this part of the Serengeti home. Environmental education has been identified as a top priority in helping the country address the effects of climate change and the destruction of biodiversity. The Environmental Education Centre was opened on the reserve to educate young school children and to ensure that local communities experience the benefits of preserving the wildlife and natural environment of the reserves which they border, and are so encouraged to play a role in their preservation. They’ve also taken the lead in creating programs to support the local community, establishing a number of sustainable agricultural projects including vegetable gardens, bee keeping, fish farming, a piggery and a sunflower oil initiative. The Grumeti Fund Scholarship was established to provide educational opportunities to disadvantaged individuals in neighboring communities.

Activities The Serengeti is well known for the annual wildebeest migration when two million animals move around this 17,763-squarekilometer ecosystem in search of grazing and water. The predators follow the wildebeest and zebra closely and a Serengeti safari is an ideal opportunity to view lions and other big cats. Professionally guided activities include game drives in open vehicles and walks. No matter the time of year, guests can always enjoy the reserve’s teeming wildlife, including impalas, warthogs, topi, gazelles, hyenas, lions, leopards, cheetahs and caracals.

Location Singita Grumeti Reserves is in the Serengeti in Tanzania. The best route from the United States is to Nairobi via Europe, then to Kilimanjaro (KLM flies this route daily through Amsterdam). The closest airport to Singita Grumeti Reserves is Kilimanjaro International Airport, about 60 miles from Arusha, where most visitors overnight before continuing by scheduled plane to Singita Grumeti. From Kilimanjaro or Nairobi, local charter companies can also provide short flights to the lodges.

Singita Faru Faru Lodge offers guests the opportunity to experience an ever-changing show of congregating wildlife without leaving the lodge’s contemporary viewing decks. Thousands of wildebeest and zebra pass through this part of the Serengeti during the migration season, drinking from the water holes in front of the lodge. Guests can also enjoy this quintessential walking safari destination on foot, trekking the dry sand river bed below canopies of tamarind, wild fig and acacia trees in search of exotic flora and fauna.

Activities In addition to open-air Land Rover wildlife safaris, guided walking tours along the river are an excellent way to experience the Serengeti the way our ancestors did – on foot. Trekkers are often surprised by the wonderfully surprising sounds that come to life in the bush — a raucous rush of baboons or the rare Colobus monkeys, an elephant ambling through a grove of trees or the windswept sigh of tall grass as a herd of zebra make their way across the plains. During June and July, guests can enjoy the annual wildebeest migration that passes right through Singita Grumeti Reserves.

The reserve is home to more than 400 species of birds, with the highest concentration of raptors in the world. Walks with licensed professional guides are a highlight of the Malilangwe experience. A system of hides and blinds and water holes has been developed for special close encounters where absolutely anything may appear to thrill the hidden guest. Fishing for large mouth bass and clay court tennis are a few of the other activities to be enjoyed.

The Strand is a national landmark, a grand colonial gem built in 1901 when Myanmar was Burma and part of British India. This fine hotel has hosted royalty and nobility, and today has been refurbished to reflect the charm of the 1920s and 1930s — from the colonnaded exterior to the marble-floored lobby lounge with its rattan furniture and black-lacquered ceiling fans. The property is conceived and operated by General Hotel Management (GHM), a worldwide leader in creating distinctive hotel concepts inspired by the landscape, architecture and culture of a destination.

JG’s “Can’t Miss” Tip Visit the Shwedagon Pagoda before sunset and watch legions of volunteers sweep the marble walkways as the pagoda’s golden spires are illuminated and temple bells and incense fill the air.
