Jewish Family Service Association of Cleveland helps individuals and families with solutions to face life’s challenges with confidence.

Letter from our Board Chair and President & CEO

Dear Friends,

Few of us have come through the months since October 7th unscathed. Living with the reality of the continued hostage crisis in Gaza, witnessing family and friends impacted on the front lines in Israel, and watching our children endure the growing antisemitism on college campuses in America, it has been a difficult and painful year for many. Having survived the pandemic, we find ourselves again turning to community in search of comfort. Amid tremendous global unrest, the healing power of community cannot be overstated.

We are grateful for both the opportunities and spaces created by our generous community where we find respite in times of grief, loneliness, or even despair. While healing spaces can take shape in many forms, they can also take form any place people gather to feel a connection to something greater than themselves. In this year’s annual report, we shine a light on these special community spaces.

This summer, ninety-four college students served as camp counselors at Jewish overnight camps and earned college fellowships offered through the Mandel Myers Fellowship program. Students embraced a return to camp where they found shelter, familiarity and a break from the antisemitic messaging that has functioned as a backdrop to their time on campus. For young campers, overnight camp through our Myers Campership program provides one of the first opportunities to experience what the Jewish community offers: the promise of lifelong friendship and a sense of belonging that transcends oneself.

Over the last year, The Kindness Center has evolved from a space where clients meet each day, to a space where friends find meaning and purpose. Participants planted a garden, planned cross-country trips, created art, shared holidays, and made memories in this vibrant, welcoming space.

Older adults in our community in particular report feeling anxious and lonely. When the community lost control of its senior living campus, anxiety about the future increased for many. When JFSA was approached by residents on campus about the possibility of providing mental health and other types of support to Jewish residents, we jumped at the chance. Being on campus has been like uniting with old friends and has been an important reminder for residents that they are not alone and have not been forgotten.

The opportunity to carve out these spaces together is what keeps each of us healthy, strong, and connected. We can all draw inspiration from the strength of collective, communal experiences ingrained in Jewish life and tradition. We welcome you to join us!

Finding Strength in Community

Together, we create spaces of understanding, support, and action where individuals can rely on each other for encouragement and share in both struggles and celebrations.

In Jewish life, community is a source of support.

It’s a place where people share their struggles and joys, find encouragement, and know they’re not alone. It’s about feeling seen and valued, building trust and connection.

FINDING STRENGTH IN COMMUNITY

The Kindness Center: A Special Space

The Kindness Center is a welcoming hub that supports people with disabilities. As part of JFSA’s Achieving Potential division, it hosts three main programs: the Horvitz YouthAbility program, which builds social skills in young people with disabilities; PLAN of Northeast Ohio, which supports adults with mental illness and other cognitive disabilities; and the Adult Day Program which provides structure and support to adults with cognitive and developmental challenges.

“The work JFSA does is impressive, and the clients we serve are amazing,” says Caroline Carbone, director of Achieving Potential. “They never cease to surprise me — the things they can do, the smiles they bring to staff and each other. Having The Kindness Center just reminds us of that. They connect here, and this is their home. Their joy is tangible.”

The Kindness Center offers a safe, welcoming place where people, no matter their abilities, feel they belong. Carbone says the environment here encourages growth and connection for

clients and staff alike. “They are excited to participate in the things we do,” she adds. It’s a place that celebrates potential and builds friendships that feel like family.

The Kindness Center also promotes interactions among program participants. “I’m really fortunate because I am here every day and I get to experience that joy and those connections,” says Becky Rinaldi, coordinator of PLAN. “For example, many PLAN members volunteer and engage in activities with the day program clients.”

These interactions create a community of support and understanding.

Rinaldi notes that The Kindness Center isn’t just about structured activities; it’s a space where people feel genuinely seen, heard, and valued. “It is a place of

inclusion,” she explains. “People come here, and they don’t feel any difference. They walk in the door, and they are with their friends. When they say, ‘I’m going to be with my friends,’ we knew we’ve created something special.”

Each day, The Kindness Center is more than just a facility; it’s a home, a community, and a place where connection and purpose thrive.

FINDING STRENGTH IN COMMUNITY

Horvitz YouthAbility: A Community for Young Adults

The Kindness Center provides Horvitz YouthAbility participants, also known as Ambassadors, with a safe space for young people with disabilities who want to make a difference in their community. For Heidi Solomon, YouthAbility coordinator, The Kindness Center is not just a gathering place but a supportive space where kindness and personal growth are part of everyday life.

“We are so grateful to have The Kindness Center. It has a really positive vibe for the Ambassadors at YouthAbility,” Solomon says. The space, decorated with their artwork and positive messages, creates pride and belonging. A wall mural reading “Kindness Matters,” surrounded by their creations, is a highlight. “They walk in and they see their artwork. It gives them a grounded feeling and they’re ready to start their day,” Solomon adds.

The Kindness Center is more than just a nice space; it’s a healing one. “It’s a very safe, warm, welcoming environment for them. The colors, the messages on the wall — all help set the tone for their day,” says Solomon. This

atmosphere encourages YouthAbility Ambassadors to start each day with a sense of purpose and self-worth, seeing reminders of their talents and community support.

At the heart of YouthAbility is the Kindness Pledge, a commitment that guides how Ambassadors interact with each other and the community. “We work really hard to create positive community and connections among the Ambassadors,” Solomon says. “We have a kindness pledge that we talk about every day: Throughout the day, we talk about how we’re giving people a good feeling or a bad feeling. They really connect with each other.”

YouthAbility Ambassador Connor L’Esperance gives the all thumbs up in the YouthAbility activity room.

The Kindness Pledge is a way of life for YouthAbility’s Ambassadors. When one of them is sick, others reach out with well-wishes, showing real concern. “We want them to have that same deep, genuine care for the community,” Solomon adds.

An outdoor garden connected to The Kindness Center brings another layer of growth. Cleared and planted by Ambassadors, it’s become a green space that leads right into The Kindness Center. “We dug it up, hauled compost from a former garden, and it’s now a beautiful space. It gives them a really positive feeling,” Solomon says. The garden reflects their hard work and gives

Ambassadors pride each time they see what they’ve created.

The Kindness Center has also given YouthAbility a place to celebrate special occasions. During Sukkot, the group hosted a large sukkah, decorated with calanit— the red poppies that are Israel’s national flower. “It makes Ambassadors feel proud because they are sitting surrounded by their work,” Solomon reflects.

YouthAbility Ambassadors bring The Kindness Center’s positive energy out into the community. “We are out in the community every single day. Our goal is to spread cheer,” Solomon says. By helping others, Ambassadors see themselves as valuable members of the community.

“We are out in the community every single day. Our goal is to spread cheer.”

FINDING STRENGTH IN COMMUNITY

PLAN: A Community for Adults with Mental Illness and Other Cognitive Disabilities

For many, living with a mental illness can be isolating and make people feel invisible. PLAN offers a place where individuals feel safe and accepted.

“This is a place where people can come, feel included, feel welcomed, and feel safe,” says Becky Rinaldi, PLAN’s holistic recovery coordinator. “They can be themselves and not have to put on a mask as they might in the rest of the world.” PLAN’s activities help members connect, from small coffee gatherings to larger social events. “For example, we recently held a music bingo night where we listened to music, marked off our bingo cards, and people danced in their seats. It was really fun.”

PLAN gives its members a chance to connect and enjoy being together. “The members really enjoy the larger groups because they get to see so

many friends, socialize, and just have fun together,” Rinaldi says. For many members, these gatherings provide a vital sense of connection.

PLAN provides a lifeline, not only to those facing mental health challenges but also to those who care for them. Elinore Evans, the mother of a former PLAN member, understands firsthand the impact that a supportive community provides. Evans notes, “People with particular challenges need community more than ever to help create stability and meaning in their lives.” PLAN provides that support and purpose every day.

JFSA Cleveland and Deer Creek Lodge: Supporting Older Adults

Sara Continenza of Foodstrong leads a workshop coordinated by JFSA for Deer Creek residents on healthy eating and wellness.

Meaningful connection to community is vital to healthy living at any stage of life. When members of Deer Creek Lodge’s (formerly known as Wiggins Place) resident board reached out to JFSA, they understood from their own experience the positive impact that community connections could have on their neighbors, especially those facing mental and emotional health challenges. Their goal was to bring to the senior living campus community-building, social engagement, and activities that nurture body, mind, and spirit.

“We focus on the whole person, incorporating educational opportunities, socialization, and recreational activities,” says JFSA mental health counselor Stacy Perretti. “Our approach combines traditional mental health with programs of interest to the residents here.” This model of care recognizes that mental health extends beyond therapy alone; it is deeply intertwined with physical health, nutrition, and community connections.

For example, one program is focused on brain health and “food as medicine.” Perretti notes, “How we eat can affect how we feel, which in turn impacts mental health.” Groups empower residents to make choices for their well-being. “Our focus is on creating

community, giving individuals the opportunity, no matter what stage of life they’re in, to feel connected and to remind them they are still part of a broader community that has not forgotten them.”

While still in its infancy, the partnership with JFSA is rewarding for both groups. “The best thing we see is that people seem happier,” Perretti says. “Residents who used to stay in their rooms are coming out, greeting each other in the hallways. It’s about creating a sense of empowerment and living life fully.”

For Deer Creek resident Gerry Ehrenberg, the sense of community and companionship is vital. “I think we’re all

aware of the growing issue of loneliness among the elderly. I didn’t want to experience that, so I chose a place where I’d always have someone to be with,” he shares. “It’s nice to know that JFSA is here — that’s reassuring.”

The benefits for Gerry are echoed by resident Linda Richards, who feels genuinely valued within the community. “I feel included. People care about me and what I have to share,” she says. Richards reflects on how the partnership with JFSA has enriched her life.

“I needed a facility after breaking my arm, and JFSA was there with open arms. I’m grateful for that support.”

Together, JFSA and Deer Creek Lodge are working to build a supportive environment that fosters wellness, comfort, and connection. The partnership offers residents resources to maintain their health and reminds them they have the support of the broader community as well, connecting their past and present in important and meaningful ways.

“Our focus is on creating community, giving individuals the opportunity, no matter what stage of life they’re in, to feel connected and to remind them they are still part of a broader community that has not forgotten them.”

FINDING STRENGTH IN COMMUNITY

JFSA and Hillel: Supporting Jewish College Students

(left to right) JFSA counselor Nate Jones and Cleveland Hillel executive director Jared Isaacson.

For many Jewish college students, Hillel offers a place to celebrate Jewish life and a safe space that feels like a home away from home. Whether enjoying a meal at the weekly Wednesday Bagel Brunch or simply hanging out between classes, students have a place to unwind and find community.

While adjustment to campus life has always been part of the college experience, statistics indicate today’s stressors go beyond the usual challenges. Specifically, since the October 7 attack on Israel, many students feel unsafe on campus, with more than one-half reporting a sense of personal danger, according to a recent study.

To begin to address the emotional wellness of students on campus, Hillel reached out to JFSA, and the result has been the placement of a counselor embedded in the Hillel professional team.

The partnership includes Kent State Hillel, which operates on the campuses of the University of Akron and Hiram College, and Cleveland Hillel, which operates on 11 Northeast Ohio campuses, where JFSA now offers mental health and wellness programs throughout the week.

“Particularly since last October, there’s been a pressing need to develop a supportive community on campus,” according to Cleveland Hillel executive director Jared Isaacson. “Hillel creates

a way to come together to find comfort and strength in each other, especially when faced with difficult events and times.”

“There is something really powerful about partnering with JFSA to provide students access to mental health support from someone within their own community,” Isaacson says. Through this partnership, students gain a trusted support system rooted in cultural understanding. “It’s been a tremendous asset. Having a clinician from JFSA who shares their background and community context helps Jewish students feel comfortable opening up about their mental and emotional needs.”

That clinician is Nate Jones, a JFSA counselor whose presence has quickly become invaluable to Hillel students. Jones observes the challenges that many Jewish students face, from academic pressures to concerns around safety and belonging. “A lot of students come to me saying they don’t always feel safe on campus because of antisemitism,” Jones shares. “Even if they’re not facing overt threats, they

don’t always feel the community around them understands what it means to be a Jewish student right now.”

At Hillel, Jones conducts individual therapy sessions and informal consults, offering students a space to discuss everything from academic stressors to personal challenges. “There’s a sense of comfort for students to talk to someone who understands Jewish culture and identity,” Jones explains. “For many students, especially those far from home, this shared connection and ‘shortcut language’ offer a sense of familiarity and trust that’s incredibly meaningful.”

Rachel Felber, executive director of Kent State Hillel, says, “In addition to a full caseload, Nate has mentored a

student board member focused on wellness. Not only did this individual flourish under Nate’s tutelage, but our wellness programming grew more robust, creating a ripple well beyond the individual leader.” That programming now includes therapy dogs, sleep wellness and yoga.

In less than two years, the partnership between JFSA and Hillel has grown significantly, underscoring a clear need for this type of culturally rooted mental health support. “Seeing students come in and feel comfortable reaching out with their concerns has been incredibly rewarding,” Jones says. “It’s proof that this service is needed, that it’s a unique support that not many Hillels across the country can offer, and from which Jewish students really benefit.”

“For many students, especially those far from home, this shared connection and ‘shortcut language’ offer a sense of familiarity and trust that’s incredibly meaningful.”

FINDING STRENGTH IN COMMUNITY

Ilana shares her experiences of summer overnight camp.

Jewish overnight camp helps Jewish children and teens build lifelong friendships, gain confidence and strengthen Jewish identity. JFSA’s two camp programs, the Mandel Myers Campership program and the Mandel Fellowship program do all of this and more each year.

The events of October 7, 2023 increased the value and impact of these special programs and added new dimensions to the overnight camp experience.

According to Susan Bichsel, PhD, JFSA president and CEO, “Jewish summer camp reminds us to let kids be kids, providing opportunities to escape nonstop news and to set aside grief or share it with the safety of community.” In fact, early survey data from this summer reveals that more than in any year in recent memory, camp created a positive impact on Jewish identity and helped young Jewish children to feel proud to be Jewish.

The Mandel Myers Campership program goes beyond traditional Jewish education. “Whether it’s learning to do the ropes or staying away from home

for the first time,” says Bichsel, “campers are part of a community that supports them in other parts of their lives.” Camp allows young people to experience Jewish traditions, like Shabbat, in an engaging environment where they can learn and even bring new perspectives back to their families.

Rabbi Avrohom Adler, executive director of JFSA’s Strengthening Families division, explains, “It’s a way to connect children to their Jewish roots and give them a place to explore their heritage.” Rabbi Dan Utley, Camp Wise executive director, stresses the program’s emphasis on inclusivity, saying, “Camp Wise is a sacred community where diverse backgrounds are celebrated, all while having fun and meeting new friends.”

For campers like Ilana, who comes from a place with few Jewish peers, camp has provided an important sense of connection. “At camp, I have more Jewish friends,” she says, adding that it’s a place where she doesn’t feel alone in her heritage. For siblings Jacob and Ryelle, camp means feeling a deeper connection to Judaism while experiencing the comfort of community. Jacob shares, “We get closer to our religion because we are Jewish, and we like learning more about Judaism.”

Still, for many campers, the experience goes beyond religious connection. Campers Olivia and Ezra describe their love for camp activities, from horseback riding to basketball, and for the strong friendships they’ve made. Ezra calls Camp Wise “the greatest place on earth,” appreciating the combination of nature, friendships, and discovery that camp offers.

Noah, an alumnus of the Campership Program, reflects on how his camp experience instilled in him the values of independence and brotherhood and

appreciation for his community. “The relationships, the experiences, and the memories,” he says, “are more than worth it.”

College students are also encouraged to experience overnight camp by becoming a camp counselor. JFSA, working with the Jewish Federation of Cleveland, offers the Mandel Myers Fellowship, a unique program designed to encourage Jewish Cleveland’s college students to work at Jewish overnight camp and develop into future Jewish leaders.

Learning workshops that are filled with a rich curriculum centered around applied professional and leadership development, Jewish learning explorations, and intentional networking opportunities to connect the experience of working as overnight camp counselor to career skills. In addition, fellows receive a college scholarship of up to $5,500 to offer future Jewish leaders a meaningful opportunity that may have previously been too financially burdensome or unaffordable.

“Jewish summer camp reminds us to let kids be kids, providing opportunities to escape nonstop news and to set aside grief or share it with the safety of community.”

DONOR SPOTLIGHT

Elinore Evans

JFSA provides a plethora of mental health services, including PLAN, which is a unique membership program that sits within the Achieving Potential Division of JFSA. For the families of PLAN members, the program offers comfort and peace of mind. Elinore Evans’ son (a former PLAN member) was diagnosed with schizophrenia in his early 20s, but found community and support through PLAN, even as he faced complex challenges. She recalls the stability PLAN provided during his journey, despite the recurring hospital visits he experienced. “We searched for stability for him, and PLAN finally provided that to Peter for quite a while,” she remembers. The program became a constant in his life and left a lasting impression on his family.

After her son’s passing, Evans and her family created the Peter Hoke Memorial Fund in his memory, so that others may benefit from the activities supported by this fund. “We’re very happy to support others who have similar challenges,” she explains. “What I saw, the relationships between caregivers and clients, the meaningful connections they made, was so impactful. The love and patience were all there.” Through the fund, her son’s legacy lives on, supporting activities and programming that meant so much to him and offering hope to others navigating similar challenges.
