2024 BLA of Landscape Architecture from the University of Rhode Island

Hello, my name is Jacob Flaherty. I was born and raised in South Portland, Maine. I first found Landscape Architecture through my love of the outdoors and being creative. My mother is an artist and through her I learned how to think out of the box. Because of this, being creative has always been a large part of my life. Fortunately, I have had the opportunity to work four summers landscaping as well as an internship with Sebago Technics in South Portland, Maine. These experiences as well as my time at URI have prepared me well for the future. I hope you enjoy my portfolio and thank you for your time!

What Cheer Flower Farm

About:
What Cheer Flower Farm is a non-profit dedicated to growing, rescuing and donating flowers across Rhode Island. With large renovations of their property in Providence, we stepped in to help bring their ideas to life. The main goals of this project were to improve the functionality of usable space, create event space, and incorporate the surrounding community while improving site resilience. Location:
63 Magnolia Street, Providence, Rhode Island 02909

PROPOSED PROGRAM DIAGRAM
While in discussions about the plan it was made apparent that parking and storage space were large concerns. Community involvment was also a large focus area for this project so including open space and foot traffic was important. With this space mostly producing and storing flowers having an adequete amount of space for flower production was a must.

The main goals while designing a concept were to incorporate mostly Rhode Island natives, improve gathering space and improve overall design.
Location:
152 Harrison Avenue, Newport, Rhode Island 02840

Newport Ocean Hour
Farm Planting Design

While drafting a rough concept for this planting plan the inclusion of winter interest, shade, and Rhode Island native plants were a large focus. My main goal for this site was to create a central event space that could be utilized through all seasons.

Deck Contruction Plan
URI | 2023

About:
The Deck construction Project was a group project where each group got to design our own deck that included steps, a pergola, handrails and a bench. Once designed the project had to include multiple details, a 3D rendering and full image of the deck itself. This project required good communication and teamwork in order to properly complete the assignment. Team members included Logan Gurney and Rasif Masrur.

Watch Hill Museum

The Westerly Museum of American Impressionism was our focal point for this project. The museum was going through renovations so it was a perfect time to think about the landscape as well. The main goal of this project was to bring those American Impressionist principles into the surrounding landscape while including program areas.
Location:
79 Watch Hill Road, Westerly, Rhode Island 02892

Proprosed Program Diagram & Section Drawing
While talking to the clients of this project they made it clear that they wanted central gathering places, views, and open space. In the begining stages of design, creating program areas while also keeping the space open was a large focus. Some of these program areas include a patio, picinic tables, courtyards, open lawn and more.

Berwick Memorial Park
Sebago Technics (Intern) | 2023

About:
Berwick Memorial Park is a small park in southern Maine with plans of adding more recreational space. With the addition of a new basketball court and tennis court, new landscaping was a must. While designing this landscape plan I focused on using a wide plant palette and reusing many plants to offer a sense of place. (Work completed at Sebago Technics, Support provided by draft and CAD team.)
Location:
Sweerset Street, Berwick, Maine 03901

Proprosed Planting Program Diagram & Section Drawing
The first step in the design process started with a very rough sketch of what the plan could look like. The rough sketch included possible plants, colors, textures, heights etc. With the sketch and a nursery book I was able to build a well rounded plant palette for the site. CAD work was done by Sebago Technics (resizing done to make legible within Portfolio).
