OUR MISSION IS TO STRENGTHEN FAMILIES AND INDIVIDUALS ACROSS GENERATIONS AND CULTURES TO ACHIEVE STABILITY, INDEPENDENCE, AND COMMUNITY.

This has been a momentous year for JFCS.

The work of Jewish Family & Children’s Service of Greater Philadelphia (JFCS) never ceases.

There has been tremendous growth in the organization and not just in traditional ways, such as increased budget, space and staff. We are “stretching muscles” that we haven’t used in the past and it has brought both growing pains and energy. In the past year we have raised our collective voices to effect change in areas that impact the clients that we serve.

We have become stronger advocates in the areas of Affordable Housing, SNAP and Healthcare Benefits, Disability Wages and Inclusion, and the ability for LGBTQ individuals and couples to adopt and foster children. We have hosted programs in our new Brodsky Enrichment Center that focus on important community concerns such as Opioid Addiction, Aging with Dignity, Maternal Mental Health, Safety for Children, Financial Literacy and Living with the BRCA gene. We partnered with additional organizations to help expand important services for those that we serve and provided training to our associates to help ensure excellent service into the future.

How fortunate we continue to be for all of the generous support and commitment on behalf of the work that we do for the community.

The compelling needs of our diverse clients and the passionate dedication of our JFCS professionals serve to motivate those of us who prioritize supporting our beloved Agency. Over the course of the past two years, in my role as Chairman of the Boards of Directors and Trustees, I have had the opportunity to hear from many of you about why JFCS is important to you. Your stories are inspirational and speak to the good that we achieve together through JFCS. Thank you for joining me in continuing to support our holy mission — to strengthen families and individuals across generations and cultures to achieve stability, independence, and community.

OUR IMPACT Caring and Secure Homes

SECURING THE HEALTH AND SAFETY OF FAMILIES JFCS serves families and children in Philadelphia, Montgomery, Delaware and Bucks Counties to preserve and support healthy growth in their homes, schools, and communities.

safe foster care homes

Billy’s Story At just eight years old, Billy already had a rough start in life. He suffered abuse and neglect at the hands of his birth family and was placed in a foster home by the age of six. That is when JFCS stepped in, working to support both the foster family and biological family by providing parenting skills, support, and training. Once it became evident that reunification wasn’t possible, Billy’s foster family made the loving choice to adopt him.

This path, while challenging, was driven by perseverance, the understanding that children come first, and unconditional love for this little boy.

In the end, everyone worked diligently to make sure that Billy was in a safe and nurturing home for the best possible outcome.

OUR IMPACT Spiritual Care

SERVING OUR MOST VULNERABLE JFCS provides services to older adults so they may age safely in place, as well as supports individuals living with disabilities so they may achieve their highest level of independence and an enhanced quality of life.

Maya’s Story When Maya’s parents passed away nine years ago, her life was suddenly filled with uncertainty. How would she care for herself?

How would she get to and from her job at Target? At the time of their passing Maya, a 48 year old woman with intellectual disabilities, depended on them for everything from food shopping to driving her to and from work. Even as they aged, their first priority was always Maya.

Through the life skills program at JFCS, Maya has learned to live on her own.

She can pay her bills, get to work, and even has learned to socialize with friends. She now looks forward to each day, comforted in the knowledge that she can easily get support from her JFCS family when she needs it.

The Smiths’ Story

healthcare, and other public programs

In March, the Smith family was out of gas and the long lingering winter made it impossible for them to pay continually high gas bills.

With the prospect of their heat being shut off looming, the Smiths’ case manager worked with their local gas company and the heat remained on.

Because of JFCS’ intervention with the “Share the Warmth” Campaign, the Smith family was able to remain in the safety and warmth of their home.

OUR IMPACT LGBTQ Communities

1,450 CREATING COMMUNITIES JFCS brings together people who are isolated and feel alone due to their life’s circumstances by helping them to engage with peers, family, friends, and community.

Sylvia’s Story Sylvia, a Holocaust survivor, is often alone; her beloved husband, Harry, passed away four years ago and her children live out-of-state.

Thanks to support from JFCS, Sylvia has managed to continue to live in her home.

She looks forward to her monthly JFCS Survivor social events.

She especially loves the cooking events because she is able to make dishes that she hasn’t been able to make on her own.

Sylvia has found a renewed sense of life and spirit thanks to being able to socialize and laugh with friends while enjoying a homecooked meal.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT Share the Warmth

The community came together to support and promote JFCS’ second annual crowd-funding campaign, Share the Warmth. Share the Warmth raised over $18,000 to pay heating costs for vulnerable individuals and families. Each year, JFCS looks to our supporters to spread the word and raise awareness as crowd-funders, and we are so grateful to everyone who participated and helped keep so many warm during Philadelphia’s very snowy winter.

Fall4Fertility and Card Day

The 3rd annual Fall4Fertility was a great success with 97 attendees and over $65,000 raised. Donations from Fall4Fertility support JFCS’ Fertility Fund: A Gift from the Heart, providing financial support towards the high cost of in vitro fertilization for those in our community struggling with infertility. We are grateful to Melinda and Michael Berkman for opening their home to JFCS and this important program.

In the spring, we celebrated new life and new beginnings with our Card Day Event. Hosted by Margie Greenberg, a light luncheon and an afternoon of mahjong, canasta, and bridge raised nearly $10,000 for the Fertility Fund.

Fashion for All

Our Closet — Powered by JFCS held the 4th Annual Fashion for All at Neiman Marcus at The King of Prussia Mall. This reception and fashion show raised $132,000 to support Our Closet’s weekly pop-up shops, which provide free clothing to vulnerable adults and children all over the Philadelphia area. This year’s Fashion for All showcased the designs of Nanette Lepore and was hosted by Ms. Lepore and Alicia Vitarelli of 6ABC Action News.

Fashion for All continues to be one of the most exciting fundraisers of the season and has grown to 250 attendees in just four years.

Join the Conversation with Jefferey Toobin

CNN senior analyst, The New Yorker staff writer, and critically acclaimed author Jeffrey Toobin joined JFCS for our inaugural Join the Conversation event. Join the Conversation included a dinner and an intimate Q&A with Mr. Toobin about his thoughts and experiences on the frontlines of American politics. The event, chaired by Bennett and Joy Keiser and Roy and Lyn Neff, raised $135,000. We want to extend a special thank you to the event’s talent sponsor, the Shusterman Family Foundation. Proceeds from the evening directly support ongoing programs at The Barbara and Harvey Brodsky Enrichment Center.

Café Europa

Our annual Liberation Day celebration brought together over 100 area Holocaust Survivors with their friends and families. In the warm environment of Keneseth Israel, Survivors were welcomed by Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney and enjoyed lunch, dancing to music of their generation, catching up with friends, and a gift of beautiful flowers.

Fran and Elliot Kane Memorial Lecture

Sage-ing: Finding the Wisdoms of Aging Across Communities and Cultures brought together area social workers and those concerned about older adults in our community. The Fran and Elliot Kane Memorial Lecture is lovingly and generously funded each year by Natalie Packel Markowitz, and is held in memory of Fran Kane z”l, a longtime employee of JFCS and one of the founding Care Managers for Senior Horizons, and Dr. Elliot Kane z”l, a dedicated volunteer to JFCS’ Hospice Program.

The event featured Marc Agronin, MD, Psychiatrist and Vice President of Behavioral Health and Clinical Research of Miami Jewish Health Systems and Roy Hamilton, MD, Associate Professor in Neurology and Director of the Laboratory for Cognition and Neural Stimulation at the University of Pennsylvania. This year JFCS honored two employees for their exemplary work: Meredith Rose and Or Ben Ari.

An Unscripted, Radically Honest Conversation about Addiction

In response to the national opioid epidemic affecting our community, JFCS hosted two evenings of insight and support on addiction: An Unscripted, Radically Honest Conversation about Addiction, moderated by Hallee Adelman, PhD. Beginning in fall of 2018, JFCS will be hosting a support group for family members of individuals in addiction as well as multiple community events to educate and inform the wider public.

Circle of Hands

Volunteerism is key to JFCS’ success and outreach in the community.

Circle of Hands — a “hands on” giving circle that creates awareness about JFCS and our community’s needs through day-of-service projects — exemplified this beautifully with their Mother’s Day Baby Shower in May. Through an Amazon Wishlist and individual donations, Circle of Hands raised over $3,200 towards necessary baby items for mothers in need.

THE YEAR OF GROWTH It has been an exciting year of growth with a purpose. JFCS continues to respond to the challenges that arise in a lifetime and remains committed to supporting our diverse region during these critical times.
