"It's been a while since Young Jewish Omaha has had an event," said Levine. "We decided to make a big 'splash' and invite Lenny Krayzelburg, who has become a real Jewish-American hero, to speak to us." Miller added, "Not only will we be meeting Krayzelburg, we'll be presenting the Young Leadership Awards in the presence of their peers. It's a real tribute to Sally and David to be recognized at this unique event." There is no charge to attend this event; however, reservations are required by calling Young Leadership Director Sharon Kirshenbaum at 3346485, or e-mail her at sMrshenbaum^jewishomalia.org. Krayzelburg just returned from the Maccabiah Games in Israel. "I never considered dropping out," he said during a telephone interview from his home in Los Angeles. "It's important to show support for Israel. The unity we have for one another as Jews was evident everywhere at the Maccabiah Games. It was the most incredible event, next to the Olympics, and competing with all Jewish athletes makes it even more unique." Krayzelburg, who was born in the former Soviet Union (FSU), visited Israel for the first time. Born in Odessa, Ukraine, Lenny and his family immigrated to the United States in 1989. The family left the FSU because of the rampant anti-Semitism and the very real possibility that Lenny would be drafted into the Soviet army. He became a US citizen in 1995. Krayzelburg will relate his story in coming to the United States with his family and how he achieved his dream of swimming in the Olympics, complete with setbacks and disappointments, during his address to Omaha's Young Jewish Leadership. Krayzelburg started swimming at the age of eight. By age 10, he was swimming five hours a day as well as running and lifting weights, which most US swimmers don't encounter in their training until they reach college. The Soviet government sponsored his training sessions and, from an early age, (Continued on page 7)
