Record Number of Participants to Attend 2001 JCC Maccabi Games ty JEWISH PRESS News Service , ., New York—This summer, a record number of -Jewish teens from all over t h e U.S., Canada, Mexico, Israel, Great Britain, Poland, Australia, Venezuela and Argentina will take part in the Jewish Community Center Maccabi Games. More than 8500 participants, plus parents and professional staff, will travel to Atlanta, Sarasota, Miami, Philadelphia and the New Jersey shore this month to compete in a wide range of athletic events. A large contingent from Omaha will leave this Sunday for Sarasota, accompanied by the JCC Program Director Rachel Shkolnick. For an entire week, these young athletes will share in the fun of competing, the joy of meeting other Jewish peers and the pride of being part of a world-famous Olympic-style event filled with Jewish content and values. According to Lenny Silberman, JCC Association's Continental Director of the JCC Maccabi Games, Tor many of these athletes, coming to the Games means getting in touch with their own Judaism for the first time; the JCC Maccabi Games are about sport competition, but also about Jewish heritage, Jewish culture and our connection to Israel. "Over the years," Silberman continued, "we've seen a number of our athletes and coaches—who might have never thought of going to Israel beforedecide to join a JCC Maceabi Experience Israel Program (JMaX) and travel to the Je%vish homeland, inspired by their involvement with t h e Games. When this happens, when people connect to Israel, one of the central missions of the Games is fully accomplished." It takes a lot of enthusiasm and collaboration to make the JCC Maceabi Games the unique, unforgettable week it represents in every participant's (Continued o n page 14)
