Mid-East-Expert Kenneth Stein to Speak on Elections, Israel by DIANE AXLER BAUM

A world-renowned expert on the history and diplomacy of the Arab-Israeli conflict will address the Omaha community on Thursday, Nov. 9, 7:30 p.m., in the auditorium of the JCC. Dr. Kenneth W. Stein is the William E. Schatten Professor of Contemporary Middle Eastern History and Israeli Studies at Emory University in Atlanta, GA.

His lecture, free and open to the community, will explore such questions as these: • Are we past the crossroads of an IsraeliPalestinian peace? • Can the negotiation process be rejuvenated, or is the 1993-2000 diplomatic window closed? • What are the ramifications for unilateral separation of Palestinian and Israeli populations? • What options exist for the Arab world and Israel in an environment of reawakened religious zeal? • How can the next U.S. President manage to keep a lid on deep-seated animosities? "We are profoundly fortunate to be bringing to Omaha,-only, two days after the presidential election, a scholar of Ken Stein's stature and superb speaking ability. His perspective on a range of issues will prove invaluable to anyone trying to keep abreast of Mid-East developments," said Steven fiiekes, co-chair of the College of Jewish Learning of Jewish Educational and Library Services (JELS). A buffet deli dinner will take place before the lecture in the JCC auditorium, starting at 6 p.m. Cost is $10 per person. Christian Arabs Flee PA Controlled Areas

by JEWISH PRESS News Sen/tee —

Margot Dudkevitch reported in the Jerusalem Post last week that "hundreds of Christian Arab families have left with the assistance of the Foreign Ministry and foreign embassies, such as those of England, Canada, and Cyprus, Shlom© Dror, spokesman for the coordinator of activities In the territories, said yesterday. '"Lately the number of requests has subsided. Those left don't have foreign citizenship, but all those able to have left," Dror added. He recalled the speech made by a Moslem preacher in a Gaza mosque after -prayers on a recent Friday, in which he called on Palestinians to attack Israelis and Christians. Shortly afterward, a group of Christians was attacked in Gaza, he said." The Post reported that in some cases, embassies sent cars to pick up the families from their homes in Ramallah, Bethlehem, Gaza, Nablus, and Tulkarm. Travel restrictions were eased and eftea passports granted to whole families, even if only one family member had legal foreign documents. The Israel Defense Forces have asserted that the Palestinian Authority did not choose Beit Jala by coincidence, but positioned the Tanzim, the military wing of the PA, near a Christian church in Beit Jala in an attempt to draw the Christian population into the conflict. The Post also reported that Central Command chief of staff Brig. Gen. Ya'acov Zigdon said those . shooting at Gilo from Beit Jala are not local residents, but extremists from elsewhere. "What we have here are cells that are not necessarily from Beit Jala," he said. While many of the families have fled the area, those left behind are being held hostage by the situation. "The armed Tanzim enter the village and take over homes and rooftops, and threaten the occupants if they object," one official said. According to Edgar Asher of Isranet, The claim that Gilo is Arab land is very spurious. Before World War II, the vacant land around Gilo was purchased by a group of young lawyers: Dov Yosef (who later became a government minister), Zvi Schwartz and Malka Shiff. (Continued on page 11}

The IDF Spokesman's Office released a pict u r e of t h e Arab Christian village of Beit Jala, taken from a vantage point in Gilo. It shows Tanzim g u n m e n , firing on Gilo in southern J e r u s a l e m from Beit J a l a , were using positions adjoining churches. "The Tanzim use buildings in Beit Jala as cover for attacks on Jerusalem. Positioning themselves n e a r c h u r c h e s , t h e g u n m e n hope Israel's response will damage a church, thus setting the Christian world against Israel. This is a cynical and deliberate method to involve a population that is not interested in conflict," said the IDF spokesman. Photo and caption courtesy ofISRANET.

"I didn't know about being a scientist," said Alan Heeger, who won the Nobel Prize for chemistry last month, for his "discovery and development of conducting polymers." Among other advances, the discovery will open up an entire new class of products including cellular phones and hand-held electronics with luminescent displays. They'll be easier to read," Heeger said. Most metals are not transparent, he explained. But with these plastics that will conduct electricity, "You'll be able to see through them. Other applications are also being developed," he added. For example, in the area of anti-statics, plastics will eliminate charges that result in static electricity. Heeger's Nobel Prize is the result of 25 years of (Continued on page 2)
