Ann Goldstein to attend President's Summit

Ten community leaders will represent Omaha at the President's Summit for America's Future, a conference involving most of the living presidents and first ladies, Sunday-Tuesday in Philadelphia. , Ann Goldstein, representing the Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce, will participate,with Mayor Hal Daub, Mary Dean Harvey of Boys and Girls Club, and seven other Omahans. Gen. Colin Powell will chair the meeting with Henry Cisneros, former secretary of Housing and Urban affairs. The Goldstein family was also represented at the recent United Way recognition luncheon where long-time volunteer Shirley Goldstein won the award in the Ethnic Adult Category for her work with Soviet Jewry. Michael J. Siref, son of Mark and Michelle Siref, won in the Special Needs Category. A junior at Westside, he has volunteered at the Hattie B. Munroe School though he is confined to a wheelchair with cerebral palsy. Others nominated were Lorrie Bernstein, Joe Ginsburg, Jane Rips, Marina Tsed and the Temple Israel Caring Committee. Ann Goldstein will soon be honored, along with Jewish community volunteers Mary Lou Walker and Dr. Magda Peck and five other women, as YWCA's Outstanding Women of Distinction. The luncheon will be May 20 at the Red- Lion Hotel ballroom, noon to 1:30 p.m. Tickets begin at $30 and are available by calling the T at 345-6555.

A crowd of nearly 250 heard Democratic political consultant James Carville speak recently at a dinner honoring major gifts donors! Known as "the Ragin' Cajun," Carville was President Clinton's consultant for the 1992 presidential campaign. Criticizing the public and the media, Carville said, "If we keep demeaning our political system and public institutions, we'll continue to end up with declining voter population in election after election and wonder why we don't have qualified candidates to run for office." New members of major gifts divisions were honored that night, as well. New Prime Minister's Circle members Omaha Steaks, represented by Fred and Steve Simon, and the Pacesetter Corporation, represented by Phil and Harley Schrager, received original lithographs by calligraphic artist Mordechai Rosenstein. Alan Simon was unable to attend. Howard Kooper is a new member of King Solomon's Circle and new Joshua's Circle members include Jack B. Yom Ha'Atzmaut to feature Maxwell Street Klezmer Band ;''-'IsraelIndependence Day celebration will take place Sunday, May 11, from 12:16-3:30 p.m., at the Jewish Community Center and will feature the Maxwell Street Klezmer Band from Chicago. The band was formed in 1983 by Lori Lippitz; it blends the earthy character of traditional Yiddish folk music with the crying-laughing quality of the clarinet and violin and lends the same quality to the performance as a saxophone wailing the blues. The band takes its name from the Maxwell Street Marketplace which was to Chicago what the Lower East Side was to New York at the turn of the century. Volunteers needed for Israeli summer camp .;..

Students and young adults from the Omaha ' Jewish community have a unique opportunity to participate as volunteers in an Israeli camp pro; gram this summer in the Western Galilee. ....... j Kefiada, an English-language summer camp for I Israeli children, ages 12-15, is part of a •: Partnership 2000, the UJA/Federation program Which provides Omahans with the partnerships in '-•^r~ "education, business and the arts. . —>r-"~ Volunteers are being recruited now for the camp, ; "^ which begins June 18 and runs through July 25. The requirements.for volunteers include at least one year of college. Previous camping experience is |'•

Bobbie Epstein, Chairman of the Partnership 2000 Midwest Consortium, said, "This program is experiencing the goals of Partnership 2000 in the truest sense. "What I've loved about my experience in the

Western Galilee is that now we have true friends in Israel." • Volunteers will be provided housing with local families or in communal dormitories. A subsidy of $640 towards airfare will be granted to each volunteer by the Israeli Association of Community Centers (IACC). All counselors will participate in. mandatory training sessions which will convey concepts such as cross-cultural communication, discipline and teaching English as a second language. A discussion with Omaha's rabbis will be the focus of the next educational program of Young Jewish Omaha. "The Meaning of Life: A Discussion with the Rabbis" will take place on Thursday, May 15 at the Wyndam Hill Clubhouse, 9226 Burt Street Dessert will be served at 7 p.m. and the program begins at 7:30 p.m. The panel will feature Rabbi Aryeh Azriel of Temple Israel, Rabbi Paul Drazen of Beth El Synagogue, Rabbi Mendel Katzman of Chabad Lubavitch of Nebraska and Rabbi Howard Kutner of Beth Israel Synagogue. The format will be an open question-and-answer discussion. Lisa Platt, YJO Education Committee CoChairman, said, "We want to give YJO members the chance to listen to the rabbis' thoughts on a variety of topics and how they affect us as Jews. "It will be interesting to hear the Reform, Conservative and Orthodox views in a single setting," she added. • YJO is a social, educational and social action group for Jews, ages 20-40, sponsored by the Jewish Federation of Omaha.
