National Conference announces 1997 honorees
Tommy Lasorda to speak at B'nai B'rith Sports Banquet
Jane Batt, Executive Director of the National " I Conference (of Christians I and Jews), announced 1 that the Otto Swanson Spirit of Service Award will be presented to Truman Clare a t the organization's annual meeting on May 20. The two Humanitarian Awards will be given to Alan, Fred and Steve Simon of Omaha Steaks Truman Clare and to former United States Senator Dave Karnes and his wife, Dr. Liz Karnes.
Tommy Lasorda, legendary former head coach of the Los Angeles Dodgers, will speak at the B'nai B'rith Charity Sports Banquet May 14 at Ak-SarBen. Clare is a longtime volunteer of the Jewish Community Center and a supporter of the Jewish Federation. He is a recipient of the Federation's Humanitarian of the Year Award in 1986. Clare is a local attorney and partner in the firm of Marks and Clare. The Simon brothers have been active in the Jewish and general communities; their company, Omaha Steaks, has supported the Anti-Defamation League Prejudice Elimination Workshop. Fred Simon, a past co-chairman of the UJA/Federation Campaign, currently chairs the Financial Resource Development sub-committee of' the Federation's Strategic Planning Committee and is a member of its Executive Board. Rabbi Wolpe will speak at Shabbat services Friday evening and Saturday morning and also on Sunday morning. His topic for the 7:30 p.m. Friday evening service, entitled "Why be Jewish," will discuss specific, powerful reasons that Judaism offers to keep Jews within the fold. Mr. Blackwell, Sports Director at KISN Radio in Salt Lake City, is a former Omaha sportscaster. He also was a former Nebraska Cornhusker football analyst on KPAB Radio. David' In addition to Why Be Jewish?, Rabbi Wolpe has authored The Healer of Shattered Hearts: A Jewish View of God, In Speech and In Silence: The Jewish Quest for God and Teaching Your Children About God. Currently, Rabbi Wolpe teaches at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, where he also serves as assistant to the Chancellor. He lectures widely at universities, synagogues and institutes nationwide and has taught at the University of Judaism in Los Angeles and Hunter College in New York. He serves as the King David Scholar for the United Jewish Appeal and on the editorial board for the Conservative movement's Torah commentary. Rabbi Wolpe received his master's degree and ordination from the Jewish Theological Seminary of America after earning his B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania ,and B.H.L. from the University of Judaism. In addition, he has studied at Hebrew University in Jerusalem and Edinburgh University, Scotland.

In the new play Anne Frank and Me, opening at the JCC Theater Sunday, March 16, Nicole, the Christian American teenager who.is transported back in time to Nazi-occupied Paris meets the real Anne Frank before they both enter a death camp. Recently, the cast of the play met with a real Holocaust survivor, Mrs. Miriam Grossman. Here, on the stage where the play is being rehearsed,; Mrs. Grossman took these young people back to the blitzkrieg that forever destroyed life as she knew it. , ' "I won't talk about the terrible horrors I experienced or saw," she began, "I will just try to give you some idea of what I went through." i Mrs. Grossman was born in a small town in Poland and was living in Lodz when the Germans invaded that country.
