There's no place like Nebraska' By Mary Fellman It was undoubtedly a first in Israeli It happened on Saturday night, Dec. 31. All of the children, spouses and grandchildren and many, many friends of Annie and Harry Allen were gathered in the beautifully decorated ballroom of Kibbutz Ramat Rachel to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. Suddenly, one of the 25 former Nebraskans and current Nebraskans began to sing 'There is no place like Nebraska!" As all who knew the song joined in, it became louder, more enthusiastic, more spirited! Imagine the surprised reaction of the guests who had little knowledge of where Nebraska even is! Incidentally, Kibbutz Ramat Rachel is the only kibbutz hotel in Israel and a charming and reasonable place to stay. Another delightful 50th anniversary party was hosted by Sarah Gold (Sally Simon) and her husband, Baruch, and their five vory good looking rliildren, for Miriam and Rrv Simon who were also spending o month in Igruel. Their upurlnivnt is in Betar Illit, n religious community in the West Bank about 12 miles out of Jonisalom. Despite the mnjor problems of pcnre nnd terrorism botweeii Arabs and Jews, between I.nbor nnd Likud parties and many others, betwrrn reli|;ioiiH and secular .lews, life on a daily basis goes along busily for most people of nil ages and backgrounds. One Saturday night we nnd more than 1,600 Iiraelis pushed uur way into the Raniado Renaissance ballroom to remember the three missing Israeli soldiers nnd to hear Nobel Peace Prize committee member Knrl KrisUnnaim speak about

his reasons for resigning firom that committee. Two of the soldiers' fathers and Natan Shuansky also spoke to an agitated and emotional crowd! After spending a delightful morning strolling on the board walk in Tel Aviv, marvelling at the beauty of the Mediterranean and also seeing the magnificent new opera house in Tel Aviv, we drove to Petah Tikva to check out the requests for equipment of the Hasharon Hospital from the Israel Endowment Funds. Harry Allen is responsible, as a volunteer, for checking out funding requests to that fund which was originated by the late Chief Justice Louis D. Brandeis. The hospital is part of the Golda Meir Medical Center and offers health services for over 180,000 people a year. In addition to research, complicated treatments related to patients sufreringj from cancer, its in-vitro fertilization of 1,500 i women and its neo-natal fucililics are nmong | Isrnel'H best So much more to tell! The new Israel Supremei Court building which wns endowed by the| Rothschild family ond designed by Ram and Ada Melnmed Cnrmi stands mnjesticnlly between the" rity of Jerusalem on one side nnd Ibe Knesset and government buildings on the other. Its circular library, its oir of eternal permanence, its quiet elegance make it one of Israel'! most historical and magnificent creations. And then there are the new shopping centeril with koahor Burger Kings, the streets of Ben Yehuda crowded with as many as 10,000 (xeople one coot 'hd\ rd^y night, the shopping for freah fruits nnd vei^etalileH before Shabhnt.
