by DAVID GOLBITZ Temple Israel Staff Writer More than 5,000 Jews from across the United States and Canada met for five days in San Diego for a week of worship, song and schmoozing at the Union for Reform Judaism 2013 Biennial. Held every two years, Biennial is a convention for North American Reform Jews to come together to discuss the status of the Movement and reaffirm their commitments to living Jewish lives and to their congregations. “I think the experience for me, this being my first Biennial, was this: while I enjoyed studying with the masses, thinking and exchanging ideas with large groups, the defining lesson for me was the feeling of fellowship and loving kindness I felt in sharing the experience with our own group,” said Lise Sasson, a member of the Leadership Development program. “I now have this novel, empowering sense of pride for and connection to Temple Israel and my Omaha home.”

There were 22 of us at the table, a wonderful group of new leaders, current leaders and clergy. For me, the best part of the Biennial was sharing it with these wonderful congregants. I am so grateful to the Meyers family for making it possible for so many to attend.” The Leadership Development program paid for registration for current and past participants through the Jon Meyers Leadership Fund. Some of the most memorable moments at this year’s Biennial were the Friday evening and Saturday morning worship services, during which the 5,000 attendees came together to worship and pray as a group. “The Shabbat worship was the most beautiful and moving of all the Continued on page 3

As one of the many programs supported through Omaha’s participation in Partnership2GETHER, involvement in the work of WGMC has a strong history in the Omaha community. Ms. Paperin met with members of Omaha’s Partnership committee and staff members and also connected with a group of medical professionals at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. During her talks, she discussed the role of the WGMC which is the one major medical center in the region, serving over 600,000 residents.
