Included in the 3,000 participants were JFO professionals Marty Ricks and Sharon Kirshenbaum. e event is a forum for current thinking and best practices in Jewish philanthropy, religion and culture, and includes discussions of the most pressing issues facing the Jewish community at home and abroad. Nobel Laureate Elie Wiesel headlined what was billed as a “historic dialogue” with Natan Sharansky, Chairman of the Jewish Agency for Israel, to commemorate the 25th Anniversary of the 1987 March on Washington for Soviet Jewry. Together they planned the extraordinary march that changed the landscape of the American Jewish community and helped free Soviet Jews. ey spoke on how the March forever impacted the global Jewish Continued on page 2

by BOB GOLDBERG Director of Strategic Initiatives, Jewish Federation of Omaha One thing that makes Omaha an exceptional Jewish community is the pride we take in welcoming new families and individuals with genuine warmth and kindness. We invite them to dinner, we tour them around town, and we show them all the things that make us proud to call Omaha home. We definitely take pride in showing off the accomplishments of the recent past, things like the new jewishomaha.org website, the modern facilities of the Rose Blumkin Jewish Home, the JCC Phil Sokolof Fitness Center, along with the cooperation we demonstrate by working together as a community. Equally important is that we let people know that Omaha is special because anyone who wants to get involved and make a difference, whether it be through the

Federation, its agencies, the synagogues or other Jewish organizations can, simply by taking the initiative to start. Our goal is to make Omaha the best Jewish community, and we are the best when we are all actively involved. On Saturday night, Nov. 17, the Jewish Federation of Omaha, Young Jewish Omaha (YJO), the JCC, along with our three synagogues and three young community Rabbis, Steven Abraham (Beth El), Josh Brown (Temple Israel), and Jonathan Gross (Beth Israel), hosted 70 people in the JCC Auditorium for a Newcomer’s Havdalah event. e event featured lots of important schmoozing and meeting new people, learning about Omaha and making sure that everyone is getting the Jewish Press. We also enjoyed an interactive Israeli wine tasting program Continued on page 2
