Murrel and Irit Kohn

Murrel are bright and caring people with a most interesting perspective about life in contemporary Israel. I thought their responses to a now disenchanted Jewish AmericanIsrael activist’s concern were quite telling. Given that many of these thoughts are shared by others and given the fact we are now in campaign season, I thought sharing some (or all) of these words with our community would be most worthwhile and well-read. “Knowing how much you were devoted to Israel, it pains me to read what you wrote. As you are aware, there is never a dull moment here. Iran has become a central issue with no solution in sight. Hamas continues to send us messages in the form of rockets and Hezbollah continues to arm to the teeth for the next round. Now the Egyptian border has come alive with terrorists and illegal immigrants. “We could and should do more with the Palestinians, but Abu Mazan put himself in the corner with his preconditions for talks. We just heard about his meeting with Jewish leaders in NY and hope the outcome will enable a restart of talks. Continued on page 3

by MURRAY NEWMAN, IRIT KOHN, and MURREL KOHN Allow me to introduce two very dear friends who live in Israel. The husband’s name is Murrel Kohn. Irit is his wife. I met Murrel, who is originally from Louisville, Kentucky, during my freshman year at Wharton School of Finance at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA, 56 years ago. Murrel and I were pledge brothers at ZBT. For about 8 years after graduation, Murrel was a practicing CPA in Louisville. Towards the end of the 1960s, Murrel and another friend decided to take a trip around the world. Murrel took a leave from his job and went to Israel where he met Irit. That’s as far as the around the world trip got. Irit, from a multi-generational Israeli family, knocked Murrel off his feet. A few months later they married; Murrel started a new life in Israel. Today, three children and four grandchildren later, Irit and Murrel are theoretically retired. Murrel, now an Israeli CPA, founded a tax accounting firm which he has since sold, but remains in an advisory capacity.

Friedel students Ivan Masyuk, Noah Blair, Sophia Mavropoulos and Jack Cohen enjoy the new location of “their” shul. ANNETTE VAN DE KAMPWRIGHT Editor of the Jewish Press For the students of Friedel Jewish Academy, going to Shul on Tuesday, Oct. 16 was a very different experience. Instead of saying

their prayers in “their” Shul, mere steps from their classrooms, they had to walk to the front of the Jewish Community Center. Not a problem for the staff and students, as this means they have much Continued on page 2
