PRE-HIGH HOLIDAY FOOD ISSUE...NEXT WEEK: ANNUAL NEW YEAR’S ISSUE

Former Middle East Envoy Ambassador Dennis Ross to Headline Community Campaign Event by PAM MONSKY, Federation Communications Director Ambassador Dennis B. Ross played the leading role in shaping U.S. involvement in the Middle East conflict for 12 years during the first President Bush and Clinton administrations. He will be the keynote speaker at the Jewish Federation’s 2004 Community Campaign Event, Thursday, Oct. 23, 8 p.m. at Beth El Synagogue. The doors will open at 7:30 p.m. The Community Campaign Event is free, however, an increased gift to the 2004 Federation Campaign is required for attendance. The event is chaired by Carol and Steven Bloch and Jennifer and Scott Meyerson. The Blochs anticipate a tremendous turnout for the event. “It’s been two years since the last Community Event, which featured Thomas Friedman,” said Steven Bloch. “We’re expecting the same high-quality program especially considering the timeliness of Ambassador Ross’ topic of Middle East peace. The ups and downs of the ‘road map’ have affected all of us, and Ambassador Ross will help us sift through recent events so that we can try to reach a clearer understanding of the current situation.” Carol Bloch added, “Another dimension is that it brings the community together. To me, sharing an experi-

ence with the entire Jewish community is as important as the message the Ambassador has for us. Steven and I are also thrilled to work twith our daughter Jennifer and her husband, Scott!” Scott Meyerson recalled hearing Ambassador Ross address the United Jewish Community’s Young Leadership Conference in Washington, D.C. a few years ago. “He was interesting and incredibly intelligent,” Meyerson noted. “He was probably the best speaker I heard at the conference. He has an ‘insider’s view’ of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and since things change on a daily basis in the Middle East, we are very fortunate to have Ambassador Ross speak to our community at this moment in history.” Jennifer Meyerson is encouraging everyone to attend the Community Campaign Event. “This is something that is so important not only for our community but for Jews everywhere. We show solidarity when we come together, and we also will deepen our understanding of the Middle East conflict,” she added. As the architect of the peace process in 1995, Ambassador Ross was instrumental in assisting the Israelis and Palestinians in reaching the “Interim Agreement,” and successfully broker-

ing the Hebron Accord in 1997. He facilitated the Israeli-Jordan peace treaty and has worked intensively to bring Israel and Syria together. Ambassador Ross has been credited for managing the peace process in the past through periods of crisis and stalemate and for his tireless approach to making progress wherever possible, refusing to accept failure
