A visit to Lisbon by STEVEN J. RIEKES The Jews of Lisbon, Portugal were the subject of a fascinating lecture by Rabbi Jules Harlow several years ago at Beth El. The Rabbi and his wife went there to work with people whose ancestors had hidden from the Inquisition for hundreds of years and now wanted to

Portugal had a very large and established Jewish community prior to horrible tragedies commencing in 1497. King Manuel of Portugal had resisted the Inquisition. sands fled to Portugal. However, those fanatic and overrated Spanish monarchs, Ferdinand and Isabella, demanded that if Manuel wanted to marry their daughter, he had to remove Jews from Portugal. Instead of allowing the Jews to flee, he refused to let them go because he did not want to jeopardize the economy. Instead, he decreed that all Jews would have to b e c o m e Catholics, even by force. Henceforth, they were known as “Conversos.” In 1506, Lisbon experienced a terrible drought. To encourage prayers for rain, the Dominican priests concocted a fake miracle with an illuminated crucifix. When someone in the crowd questioned the ‘miracle’, the Dominicans figured that the daring questioner must be one of those Conversos, and stirred up the mob against the Jews. Thousands of Jews were killed during the next three days in a public orgy of violence. Five hundred years later, but not until Continued on page 2
around the country. He is a long-time, respected national lay leader whose main goal is to inspire people to give. Over the years, he has devoted an enormous amount of time and passion to that cause. Rob was the 2006 volunteer Chair of the United Jewish Communities National Young Leadership Cabinet. He is also a member of Chicago’s Jewish United Fund Board of Directors and a member of their Executive Committee. Since becoming a trainer in 2003, Rob has spoken or trained on a volunteer basis at over 50 Federations throughout the US and Canada. Rob qualified for the distinguished two-year Wexner Heritage Program, founded by Les Wexner, the head of The Limited® clothing store chain. “Those men and women selected, aged 30 to 45 years old, have personal, professional, and communal lives reflecting leadership and commitment to the Jewish people, as well as significant potential for future growth as Jewish leaders,” according to the Wexner Heritage website. “The Wexner Heritage Program is designed to help leaders discover their full Jewish leadership potential and to inspire them to realize that potential,” the website adds.

Rob is an enthusiastic and outgoing man with a deep passion for the Jewish people and Israel. Like his father before him, he has gotten deeply involved in working to support Jewish Federations as well as the State of Israel. “I like to help people unlock their passions about being Jewish, supporting Jewish causes, and Israel,” Rob said. “One of the reasons I became involved was because I wanted to work on upgrading the solicitation program. As the immediate past Chair of the United Jewish Communities National Campaign Training Department, Rob got his chance. “My best solicitations came when I disclosed why I was so passionate about raising money for our Federation. At the same time, I knew that we had to address what was in it for the donors. Why, for example, should donors care? Why should they give of their money and time? When a donor and I meet, I begin by asking donors open-ended questions. What do you care about in your Jewish community”? When they share their interests, I share mine.” There are many different reasons to give to a special cause; when these reasons Continued on page 2
