JCC says goodbye to community shlicha, welcomes new one by LISA SHKOLNICK JCC Associate Executive Director Though Zohar Winer, the community shlicha at the Jewish community Center for the past two years, will soon be winging her way back to Israel, the JCC will welcome Tamar Halevy next Friday. Halevey, Omaha’s third consecutive year-round Israel shlicha (emissary) was living in Jerusalem while working in the West Bank as an education officer for the border police. The 23-year-old recently completed her fourth year of army service to the Israel Defense Force. As an Education Officer, Halevy was in command of 10 young Tamar Halevy non-commissioned officers, and responsible for all educational activities in 20 units at the West Bank Division of the Border Police. Educational activities included teaching Hebrew, Hebrew and Zionism and High School Education courses, lectures, field trips, studies of moral dilemmas and issues, and Jewish and Israeli identity programs to name a few. Many Israelis after completion of their service in the IDF take the following year to travel, explore interests, and to decide the career path they would like to take in the future. Halevy, like other Israelis, chose a volunteer shlichut experience in the United States, to help educate, excite, and bring meaningful experiences about Israel to American Jews. “The reasons that made me decide on a volunteer shlichut were the same reasons that made me choose ‘the road not taken’ in the last eight years of my life,” Halevy indicated. “I’m constantly seeking for meaningful paths to walk, and I found it in the education ‘business’. I see the importance of the mutual relations between the Jewish Diaspora and the state of Israel, and I believe educational activities are the key for strong relations between the two sides of Judaism today.” Continued on page 2

past April in New York, and which highlighted vibrant Jewish locales across the United States and Canada. On Friday night, Sept. 12, Savitsky will address the Beth Israel Board of Commissioners and past presidents at a dinner given especially in his honor. The topic will be “The Beth Israel/OU Partnership: An Open Discussion with President Savitsky.” On Shabbat morning, Sept. 13, he will focus on “The OU: Our Mission,” during services. After lunch, he will discuss, “Our Voices, Our Votes: Perspectives on Israel, Jerusalem and Election ‘08.” Finally, Savitsky will speak on “Can One Man Make a Difference?” at Seudah Shlishit. Beth Israel’s Rabbi Jonathan Gross noted that “Beth Israel is very proud to be an OU synagogue. In previous generations, our membership sacrificed to ensure that Beth Israel maintained the standards and integrity of an OU membership shul -- the Gold Standard for an Orthodox synagogue. This visionary achievement established the foundation upon which our present burgeoning community is built.” Shabbat lunch costs $8 for adults, $4 for kids ages four-12, and free for kids three and younger. To RSVP or for more information, call the Beth Israel office at 556.6288.
