by LISA LIEB Federation Communications Director Suzanne Richards Singer could have stopped the volunteer merry-go-round years ago. She could have settled into a life of travel, visits with grandchildren and mah jongg. Actually–she does travel, she does visit grandchildren, and she does play mah jongg. But for Singer, volunteering isn’t a chore to be squeezed in when it’s convenient to do so. Serving her community has always been an integral part of who she is. In recognition of a lifetime of giving back to the community, Singer has been named the Jewish Federation of Omaha’s 2005 Humanitarian of the Year. For Carol Katzman, Editor of the Jewish Press, nominating Singer for Humanitarian of the Year was a natural choice. “She’s served as an officer of many organizations; she’s held numerous leadership roles, and served on many boards, yet for Suzanne Singer no volunteer job is too small,” Katzman wrote in her nomination. “When other high-level volunteers would be basking in the glow of their well-earned accomplishments, Suzanne Singer comes to the Press office to proofread the weekly issues. Not only does she call synagogues, organizations and parents of teens when she has a question about an article, she actually purchased a two-volume updated dictionary for the Press to ensure that our spellings and usage were correct,” Katzman added. “Now that’s a dedicated volunteer!” Singer is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Milton S. and Corinne N.

According to Singer, working on the Sokolof Scholarships has been one of the most interesting, challenging and rewarding projects in which she has ever been involved. Since this was the inaugural year, Singer and her committee needed to create Continued on page 2
