by SHERRIE SAAG Communications Specialist, Jewish Federation of Omaha The 2013 Annual Campaign will focus on community families with the theme, “In my Footsteps: Learn from the Past, Lead for the Future.” With this in mind, it was a natural to have the Riekes family chair the 2013 Campaign, but with a twist. This year, Brett and Stacey Atlas will join Carl and Zoë Riekes as Campaign co-chairs and help promote a multi-generational family approach to our Campaign efforts. “Carl and I couldn’t be more thrilled to help direct this year’s Campaign with our children, Stacey and Brett, by our sides. by CHRISTINA KAHLER Director of Marketing & Public Relations Omaha Children’s Museum is pleased to announce its sixth annual Great Friends to Kids Luncheon at the museum, 500 S. 20th Street, on Aug. 27 from noon to 1 p.m. The late Ann Goldstein and Gallup will be recognized for their dedication to metro-area children. “This event will bring together businesses, community members and civic leaders to celebrate those who have worked passionately to enhance the lives of metroarea children,” said Lindy Hoyer, executive director of Omaha Children’s Museum. “We’re proud of our community’s family friendly nature and want to recognize individuals who have worked diligently to make this a wonderful place for children to grow up.” Ann Goldstein will receive the

Great Friend to Omaha Children’s Museum award posthumously and Gallup will receive the Great Friend to Kids award. Ann Goldstein was a

strength in numbers! We are fortunate to have strong Jewish leaders from all generations in this community. So, we chose to focus the Campaign on that generational strength in the hopes that our future leaders “grab the baton” from our current community.” “We can learn a lot from our parent’s generation. They were instrumental in building this Jewish community, both financially and structurally. Now, it is up to us, the next generation, to step forward and follow in their footsteps (thus the campaign theme)!” Brett commented further, “This Campaign is going to be different because we are leading as a family. It’s Carl and Zoë, part of Omaha’s “great generation” that led us and built what we take for granted every day. Historic Omaha Torah scroll coming home by LEIBEL BAUMGARTEN For more than a year he has been sitting in a tiny room in the holy city of Jerusalem. Each morning he arrives, after immersing in a mikvah, and picks up his feather.

Unity Torah. The words he writes today are the very same ones written by Moses more than 3,000 years ago. The messages this scroll contains will provide the very same inspiration that sustained our par-

Her passion for children was evident in her life as an elementary school teacher, her love for her family and through her service to the museum and other organizations. More than 35 years ago Ann and several friends joined together as volunteers to establish a children’s museum in Omaha and served as first governing board members of the museum. Throughout the most tragic of eras, from the crusades to the Holocaust, the Torah was with us, crying, yet surviving.
