Mark Kohn, left, and John Ferrin by MARK KOHN It was the summer of 2000 that my friends Joe Erman, Bruce Hoberman, and Jon Okun encouraged me to start bike riding with them. Over the last 13 years, we have taken numerous bike trips, ridden countless miles on the trails around Omaha and even named ourselves “The Hebrew National Bike Team”. Over time, I started to have an interest in doing an organized ride; but the other team members really had no interest in participating in one. On a cold March morning, while I was at the JCC working out on an elliptical machine, John Ferrin, who was on the machine next to me, casually mentioned that he was thinking about riding in
BRAN (Bike Ride Across Nebraska) this year. I just looked at him and said, “I’ll do it with you.” By the end of that day, I was registered for the ride. It was a few weeks later that John informed that he was registered, and that his 16-year-old grandson Jacob was also going to ride with us. I thought how lucky they were to be able to do that together. Now, all John and I had to do was get into bike shape! The cold and wet spring made it difficult to get in the necessary training that is recommended for a seven-day, 471 mile bike ride. Thanks to the physical fitness instructors at the JCC, we were able to do a number of spinning, weight training, and boot Continued on page 2
