by CLAUDIA SHERMAN There are an estimated 25,000 refugees in Nebraska with 15,000 in Omaha alone, according to Omaha resettlement agencies and federal resettlement reports. On Saturday, June 21, hundreds of them are expected to attend a health fair from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Benson High School. The health fair is part of World Refugee Day, a free event organized by the Omaha Refugee Task Force. Established by the United Nations, World Refugee Day is observed in numerous countries every year to honor the courage, strength, and determination of women, men, and children who are forced to flee their homeland under threat of persecution, conflict, and violence. Overseeing the health fair is the University of Nebraska Medical Center’s Inter-Professional Service Learning Academy (SLA). Ruth Margalit, MD, is the founding director of the SLA and an associate professor, College of Public Health, Health Promotion, Social and Behavioral Health, University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) faculty. by ALAN POTASH Regional Director, ADL Plains Region/ Community Relations Committee JFO The Anti-Defamation League Plains States Region (ADL) is excited to announce the official public opening of TypecastRecast scheduled for Sunday, June 22 at 1 p.m. The original opening, delayed due to weather, TypecastRecast was installed in April of this year. The installation includes six pieces of public art dedicated to starting a dialogue in Omaha about differences and community within this city. The ADL is the nation’s premier civil rights and human relations agency with a mission to fight all forms of bigotry, defend democratic ideals and advocate for civil and human rights. Regionally, the ADL Plains States Region implements programming that directly addresses this mission. TypecastRecast is the

largest and most visible effort to date. Because of its size and location, TypecastRecast has the potential to reach a much larger and perhaps more diverse audience in a shorter amount of time than some of our traditional programming, and this kind of potential is very exciting for us. We hope to hear more dialogue during the next few months. Over the next several months, the site will be used for several educational events for school groups, corporations and community groups. Finding starting points to have difficult conversations can often be challenging. With art, there is no right or wrong answer, and it’s a great vehicle to promote engaging in discussion. We hope this project will open doors to many meaningful conversations and, possibly, transform people’s lives by making Continued on page 2
