Biden said Israel has an “absolute right” to defend its security interests, according to a transcript Politico obtained of an interview that was to be Wednesday broadcast evening on the Charlie Rose show on Bloomberg TV. “It’s legitimate for Israel to say, ‘I don’t know what’s on that ship. These guys are dropping eight -- 3,000 rockets on my people,” Biden said. Israel’s raid before dawn Monday on the largest ship ended in bloodshed when passengers clashed with commandos. Nine passengers were killed, six Israeli soldiers were injured, and Israel’s relations with Turkey, which flagged the ship, were at an all-time low. Israeli troops boarded and commandeered the five smaller ships without incident. Biden repeated the Obama administration’s position

by JOAN MARCUS AND ANNETTE VAN DE KAMP-WRIGHT Editor of the Jewish Press Omaha businessman, philanthropist and art collector, Phillip G. Schrager, passed away on Monday June 7 at the age of 72. Funeral services were held at Temple Israel, Thursday, June 10. He was chairman of the board of Pacesetter Corporation, a longtime Omaha company that sold home improvement products. He was the oldest of three children born to Sonia and Jack Schrager, longtime Omahans. Schrager amassed a collection of masterpieces that some critics called one of the most outstanding collections in The United States. Jan Executive Goldstein, Director of the Jewish Phillip G. Schrager Federation of Omaha said, “He approached his passion for art, his business career, and his Jewish philanthropic work all in the same fashion. He absolutely set the standard for philanthropic giving and for creating community. I cannot imagine how many lives Phil has touched.” In addition to what he did for greater Omaha, Schrager gave and raised money for The Jewish Federation of Omaha, the area synagogues, the Chabad House, The United States Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C., and “just about every other segment of our Jewish Community,” Goldstein said, “the list is endless.” The Lois Jeanne Schrager Memorial Fund has funded scholarships through the Center for Jewish Education-its programs on special needs and disabilities and the Jewish Federation of Omaha's Young Leadership Award. In 1993, Schrager served as general chairman of the Federation Annual Campaign, and in 1992, he served as chairman of the Pacesetter Division of the Federation Annual Campaign. In 1998, for the Israel Emergency Campaign, and again in 2006 for the Second War with Lebanon, Phil set the bar for raising hundreds of thousands of dollars for Israel within the Omaha Jewish Community. He helped high school students to visit Israel on the ARTZA teen program and helped to fund scholar in residence programs, Soviet resettlement education and dozens of other Jewish and community programs. Schrager was honored by The Nebraska Chapter of the Society to Prevent Blindness and, in 1993, he received The Humanitarian of the Year Award from The Jewish Federation. “Phil personally charged every one of us to take responsibility as individuals,” Goldstein said, “ and he had such an impact on the quality and character of what our Jewish community is today. There are no words to express how much he will be missed.” More recently, his family funded the building of The Schrager Memorial Chapel on the grounds of Temple Israel Cemetery. The much needed chapel provides convenience and solace to families during their time of grief. Schrager was preceded in death by his first wife, Lois Jeanne in 1978. He always considered his role as a loving husband and father to his children as his greatest accomplishment, and prided himself as a family man who provided encouragement and suggestions. He is survived by his wife, Terri, son and daughter-inlaw, Jeffrey Schrager and Anne York; son and daughterin-law, Timothy and Lauren Schrager of Atlanta; son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Laura Schrager; daughter and son-in-law, Angela and Aaron Goldman of Atlanta; and son, Jack.
