by SHERRIE SAAG Communications Specialist, Jewish Federation of Omaha In the Omaha Jewish community, the name Riekes is synonymous with time, energy, passion and leadership. It brings to mind a multi-generational family dedicated to the preservation and growth of the place we call home. From serving on boards (both the Jewish Federation of Omaha and the Jewish Federation of Omaha Foundation) and chairing committees (Partnership2Gether and the Annual Campaign are just two) to helping build the Jewish Community Center, Rose Blumkin Jewish Home and the Henry and Dorothy Riekes Museum, the spirit of giving is ingrained in multiple generations of this family. This year, the Jewish Federation of Omaha (JFO) honors Carl and Zoë Riekes with the Phil and Terri Schrager Spirit of Federation awards for their commitment and dedication to the Federation and its agencies. Carl and Zoë chaired the 2009 and 2010 Federation Annual Campaigns and, together with their children Stacey and Brett, chaired the 2013 Annual Campaign. Carl’s parents, Henry and Dorothy, were the 1989 Humanitarians of the

by BETH COHEN Executive Director, Center for Jewish Life Editors note: The CJL and the Jewish Book Month Children’s Event is the recipient of this year’s Community Service award and will be recognized at the Federation’s Annual Meeting on Monday, June 3 at 7 p.m. in the JCC theater. In January of 2012, a Task Force was charged with conceptualizing changes for the Center for Jewish Education (before that, Jewish Education and Library Services, before that the Bureau of Jewish Education). As if the number of name changes doesn’t say it clearly enough, community-based agencies charged with Jewish education

struggle to stay relevant. Looking beyond a primary function of “traditional” education, the Task Force worked to re-imagine our services and programming in an effort to engage as many members of our community as possible. We always kept in mind that education happens at any age, at any time, in any situation, so every idea was on the table. To say we were “thinking outside the box” sounds so cliché, but it is exactly what we had the opportunity to do. From the Task Force meetings, our new agency name and mission evolved: The mission of the Center for Jewish Life is to maximize involvement of Omaha’s Jewish community Continued on page 2
