State Holocaust Observance Features Sam Fried by PAM GANNON Holocaust Commemoration Publicity Chairman Holocaust Remembrance Day was created by an act of Congress in 1980 to remember the victims of the Holocaust and to remind Americans of what can happen to civilized people when bigotry, hatred, and indifference reign. The Holocaust took the lives of more than 11 million individuals; and though slightly more than half that number were Jewish, we commemorate not the loss of lives of one group of people, but all who perished. According to Gary Hill, Chairman of this year’s statewide Holocaust observance, it is particularly relevant that government takes a leadership role in remembering the Holocaust because those targeted for death and enslavement consisted of people whom the governSam Fried ment in power found either inferior or in opposition to their philosophy. Though nothing in the last half century has matched the organized and officially sanctioned slaughter, the world has continued to allow genocides, ethnic cleansings and politically motivated incarcerations to continue. The annual Nebraska State Holocaust Commemoration will be held in the rotunda of the State Capitol on Sunday, April 23, 3-4:30 p.m. Sam Fried, a Holocaust survivor, will be the main speaker. Senator Ernie Chambers will serve as the Legislative sponsor; Lieutenant Governor Rick Sheehy and Lincoln Mayor Colleen Seng will be among those recognizing the importance of remembering.
