Leslie Graul named teen leader by LISA LIEB Federation Communications Director During the annual Yom Haâatzmaut celebration, Leslie Graul will receive the 2006 Jewish Teen Leadership Award. The award ceremony will kick off the Bânai Bârith Bible Quiz at the Rose Blumkin Jewish Home Auditorium on Sunday, April 22, 1 p.m. Graul was active in the Bânai Bârith Youth Organization throughout her high school years. A member of MZ Yoshanah BBG, Graul has held chapter roles of treasurer, shlicha and president. She has also served as BBG Council Mit-Mom (Membership VicePresident), 2005 Winter Regional Convention Coordinator, and 2006 New Members Convention Coordinator. When asked if a particular role stood out as her favorite Graul replied, âI love everything I did for this organization. With each position, there were new challenges, and different angles to look at. I loved the people I met, and the friendships I made.â In 2006, Graul was elected to be a regional voting delegate at the BBYO International Convention. âI have never in my life seen so many Jewish teens in one place,â she mar veled. âYou canât imagine how moving Lesley Graul it is to stand with 300 other Jewish girls and sing the BBG pledge. And being from Omaha made it even better, because this is where BBYO started.â In addition to her involvement with BBYO, Graul has been an active participant in Shiputznick, the JCC Jewish teen volunteer program. âEver since I was a kid, I have been taught that giving back to the community is of the utmost importance,â said Graul, who pointed to a long list of her motherâs volunteer activities as her inspiration. âSo when Shiputznick first started, there was no doubt in my mind that I wanted to be involved. It was a great way to give back to the Omaha community.â At Westside High School, Graul is a member of the National Honor Society and Quill & Scroll (the national honor society for journalists). Some of her favorite activities were âWTVâ, a news show produced by the senior broadcasting class, âWestside Transmitâ, an online podcast produced by Graul and two of her friends; and the marching bandâs drumline, where she was section leader of the bass drums. Graul is also a member of the Chemistry Club and the German Club. Graul graduated early from Westside, in order to spend the spring semester attending school in Germany. âI decided to graduate early because I wanted to get out in the world and try something new,â Graul explained. Although she admits that itâs hard to be so far from home, Graul describes her semester in Germany as the best decision sheâs ever made. âItâs amazing to be halfway around the world and yet the conversation is exactly the same, just in another language. My school here is great. Iâve learned a ton here, and the people in my class make it fun and interesting.â Graul is anxious to correct any misconceptions people Continued on page 2
