TriFaith speakers call for Shalit’s release by CAROL KATZMAN Editor of the Jewish Press Two of three featured speakers at last month’s TriFaith dinner called for the release of Cpl. Gilad Shalit, the Israel soldier captured by Hamas in 2006. Held for more than 1000 days, Shalit’s wherabouts are unknown and he has been denied visits by any relief organization, including the Red Cross.

JCC Maccabi Games make a return visit to Omaha in 2010 by LISA SHKOLNICK JCC Maccabi Games Director If you’re lucky the opportunity to do something extraordinary happens once in a lifetime. And in exceptional cases, you get an opportunity to do that “extraordinary something” twice. On Aug. 1–6, 2010, the Omaha community is again hosting the JCC Maccabi Games. CoKimberly Chairmen Robinson, Cindy Goldberg, and Stacey Rockman are leading this effort, and began the planning process nearly one year ago. Nearly 1000 young Jewish athletes and hundreds of visiting parents and families will descend on Omaha for the 2010 Games, an Jody Malashock, co-chairman of the 2002 JCC Maccabi Games, challenges JCC Executive Olympic-style competition Director Jeffrey Aizenberg to match her team’s achievements for the 2010 Games. for Jewish athletes ages 1316. Participants will come from more than 25 cities nationwide, as well as from Israel, and maybe even from Budapest. Events for the week include opening and closing ceremonies, full days of athletic competition, evening Programs, Host Family Night, and Community Service Programs. As a host city, the Omaha delegation is unlimited in size. With over 280 eligible participants, the delegation is expected to increase from 20 athletes in 2009 to more than120 athletes in 2010. In addition, 12-year-old athletes will be allowed to compete in individual events in 2010. Omaha’s sport selections include baseball, basketball, bowling, dance, golf, soccer, swimming, table tennis, tennis, and volleyball. Israeli army discounts soldiers’ stories of Gaza misconduct by MARCY OSTER JERUSALEM (JTA) -- Myth or fact? The Israel Defense Forces says that two accounts by Israeli soldiers alleging misconduct by their comrades in Gaza were based on hearsay rather than fact. After an initial inquiry, the criminal investigation department of Israel’s Military Police closed the probe Monday after it could not substantiate any of the accounts. But the allegations, first aired last month at a conference at an Israeli military college and then published two weeks ago in the college’s bulletin, already had sparked a firestorm of controversy in Israel and criticism of the Jewish state overseas. A flurry of editorials and op-eds around the world condemned the IDF’s alleged misdeeds. According to the soldiers, Israeli troops used heavy firepower in built-up civilian areas, shot and killed women and children on at least two occasions because of loose rules of engagement and, in many

The day after the allegations were made public by the Oranim Academic College’s bulletin and reported by Israeli media outlets, the IDF’s advocate general, Brig. Gen. Avichai Mendelblit, instructed the army to look into the claims. “It is unfortunate that none of the speakers at the conference was careful to be accurate in the depiction of his claims, and even more so that they chose to present various incidents of a severe nature, despite not personally witnessing and knowing much about them,” Mendelblit said March 30. “It seems that it will be difficult to evaluate the damage done to the image and morals of the IDF and its soldiers who had participated in Operation Cast Lead.” The central allegation -- that soldiers shot at a Palestinian mother and two of her children after they entered a closed military zone after being evicted from Continued on page 2
