Celebrating Purim in the Heartland
Above: Twins Ari and Ethan Finkelstein joined in the festivities at Beth El as Tigger and Scooby Doo. Right: Steve Denenberg, Cantor Gastón Bogomolni and Rabbi Mordechai Levin led the Family Megillah reading at Beth El, which drew 300 Purim revelers. Ygal Schuller, USY president and Purim Carnival chairman, hawks one of the carnival’s raffle prizes. Photos at right: Helping with the Purim celebration at the Chabad House are Elaine left, Urban, Maya Wertheimer, and Miri Katzman, who are preparing hamentashen and other treats for the crowd, including Rabbi Mendel Katzman, left, Michael Kellen, and Danny Margolis, after the reading of the megillah.
Above: Enjoying the carnival merriment at Temple Israel were Bella Radler, left, and Cecelia Vann; below: Haley Burns and Rachel Saferstein were among the youth groupers who supervised the games; and Destiny and Sarah Wiseman. Four days later, Temple staff, bickered on the bimah over what to present for a Purim Schpiel to the tune of “The Muppet Show”, “My Favorite Things”, and “Tradition”, as well as a poetic interpretation according to Dr. Seuss. The whining, crazy rhymes and songs gave way to a costume parade. When it was all over, the staff, including Rabbi Eric Linder, above left, crooned its gratitude to Esther and Mordechai for the opportunity to be ridiculous.
Jim and Selma Shamberg were crowned Purim King and Queen at the Rose Blumkin Jewish Home.
At Beth Israel’s megillah reading, brothers Josh and Max Polack, above, came dressed as Rivka and Yitzchak. Right: the ‘royal family’ includes Renee Kazor and Helene Shrago, along with other Kazor family members, while Alice in Wonderland (aka: Lesley Gendelman) holds the Cheshire cat (baby Emma).
