The Heartland celebrates Yom Ha’Atzmaut with Israel@60

At 8 p.m., Israel time on Sunday evening, lights in Tel Aviv were either turned off or dimmed for one hour, as Israel participated in the world-wide event to raise awareness of global warming. The focal point of Israel’s visual contribution was when President Shimon Peres turned off the switch at the three-tower Azrieli complex in the center of the nation’s busy commenrcial center. One by one, lights on each of these landmark towers went black in common with many other buildings and institutions whose owners Credit: ISRANET cooperated in the global event.
Community commemorates Yom Hashoah by MARY SUE GROSSMAN Center for Jewish Education Administrator Yom Hashoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day, will be observed Wednesday, April 30, 7 p.m., at Beth Israel Synagogue, with a commemoration service open to the community. The service will begin with the lighting of the Shoah memorial candelabra. “The phrase ‘never forget’ is heard so often,” commented Toba Cohen, Yom HaShoah Committee Chairman “This is an evening for the community to come together and give action to this phrase in showing its respect to those who perished in the Shoah. It is also the opportunity to honor the survivors in our own community and express our appreciation for their strength and inspiration.” Roman Kent is the featured speaker of this year’s commemoration. Kent, who was born in Lodz, Poland, was in the Lodz Ghetto for six years and was also in the Auschwitz, Mertzbachtal, Dornau, and Flossenburg concentration camps. He is the chairman of the American Gathering of Jewish Holocaust Survivors and is the treasurer and board member for the Conference of Jewish Material Claims Against Germany. Kent also produced the documentary film, Children of the Holocaust, and is the author of My Dog Lala, a touching true story of a young boy and his dog during the Holocaust. Continued on page 2
