Omaha Community Yom Hashoah Commemoration by ILANA WEISS for Institute for Holocaust Education For some, the Holocaust seems like a part of distant history, a terrible time in the story of the Jewish People, yet something which is part of the past. For others, the memory of the Holocaust is recalled each day with heavy emotions and burning images racing through their minds. There is one day, however, that all members of the community join together to reflect and remember. That day is Yom HaShoah – Holocaust Remembrance Day. While there have been many difficult periods throughout the Jewish People’s history, the Holocaust stands out as a particularly destructive time – one that had such an expansive reach. Therefore, a day on the calendar has been set aside specifically to mark the tragedy of the Holocaust. Around the world, this day is marked in different ways. Known more formally by its full name “Yom HaShoah Ve-Hagevurah,” literally “Day of Destruction and Strength,” the official day of remembrance takes place each year on the Hebrew date of 27 Nissan, the same month in which Passover occurs. The date marks the anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. The true date of the uprising took place a week prior, on 20 Continued on page 5
