Halfway there, “New Beginning” ready for Blumkin Home’s community campaign by OZZIE NOGG Paul and Sandy Epstein and Richard and Joanie Jacobson will lead the community-wide fund raising campaign for the New Beginning of the Rose Blumkin Jewish Home. The campaign officially starts at an Open Forum on Tuesday, May 8, 7-9 p.m. at Ironwood Country Club, during which Mike Silverman, Executive Director, Jewish Senior Services/Rose Blumkin Jewish Home, will take the audience on a virtual tour of the new facility and answer questions from the floor. “Thanks to the extraordinary efforts of Howard Kooper and the late Harlan Noddle, millions of dollars of seed money have already been raised from a small group of very, very generous donors,” Joanie Jacobson said. “Howard and Harlan are two of the finest examples of dynamic, determined and effective leaders any community could ever want. When Harlan died last year, Federation Director Jan Goldstein stepped in to help Howard, and believe it or not, we’re over half way to our $18 million goal -- how’s that for momentum? She added, “Now it’s our turn. The

Richard and Joanie Jacobson entire community will benefit from the new Home, and it’s the entire community that can put us over the top -- get us to the finish line. We have to do it, and we will.” A second Open Forum is scheduled for Thursday, May 31, 7-9 p.m., at the Jewish Community Center. “Dessert will be served at both Open Sandy Forums,” Epstein said, “and reservations would really be appreciated.” Please e-mail her at slepstein@cox.net,

Noted author helps community commemorate Yom HaShoah by MARY SUE GROSSMAN Administrator, Center for Jewish Education Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day, will be observed Wednesday, April 18, 7 p.m., at Temple Israel, with a commemoration open to the community. The service will begin with a procession of area Holocaust survivors lighting the memorial candelabra. “The importance of the community to gather together at this time of remembrance is critical to honor those who were lost and to remind us to ‘never forget’,” states Bea Karp, Yom HaShoah Committee Co-Chairman and a survivor. “We must all be vigilant to keep such an unfathomable event from happening again and to protect the future for generations to come.” The featured speaker of this year’s commemoration will be Ann Kirschner, author of Sala’s Gift. The book tells the story of Kirschner’s mother, Sala Garncarz Kirschner, who survived five years as a slave in five different Nazi labor camps. She kept her experience a secret from her family, until 1991 when scheduled for heart surgery. Sala showed her daughter a collection of more than 350 letters and a diary from her years in the camps, documents that she had kept carefully hidden in a cardboard box. Kirschner said in that moment, her mother changed her life. Continued on page 2

Home. “The main reason I’m doing this job is to honor the memory of my parents, Morrie and Helen Lipp,” Sandy Epstein said. “I love what the Home did for my family, what they’ve done and continue to do for people I know. My aunt and uncle, Marge and Norm Lincoln, are perfect examples. Some years ago they went to the Home for rehab and chose to stay as permanent residents because they have medical needs that can’t be met anywhere else. There’s magic in the Blumkin Home. The more you’re there, the more you see it.” Continued on page 3
