Remembering Louie Blumkin

This Week

ANNETTE VAN DE KAMP-WRIGHT Editor of the Jewish Press Louis (Louie) Blumkin, born in Omaha on June 27, 1919, son of the late Rose and Isadore Blumkin, passed away February 26, 2013, at the age of 93. He was preceded in death by his sister, Frances Batt. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Frances; his sons and daughters-inlaw Ron and Chris Blumkin, Irv and Susie Blumkin, and Steve and Cindy Blumkin; eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and sisters Cynthia Schneider and Sylvia Cohn. Blumkin, along with his mother and brothers-in-law Norman Batt and Jerry Cohn, built Nebraska Furniture Mart into the nation’s largest single-location furniture store. Blumkin worked for the Nebraska Furniture Mart for 75 years. Like his mother Rose, his name was synonymous with the “Mart.” According to the Omaha World Herald, Warren Buffett (who bought a majority of the Mart in 1983) said: “Louie was a great friend, a great partner in business and a great merchant. Beyond that, he was a great teacher. His primary students were his three sons, and they would make any father proud. His legacy is in the

best of hands.” There was much more to Blumkin, however, than his business. In 1979, the Society of Holocaust Survivors held a dinner to honor veterans who had been instrumental in the liberation of concentration camps during World War II. “Louis Blumkin epitomizes the word “mensch” and was a true “Man of Valor,” said Sam Fried. “In 1945, Louie witnessed firsthand the atrocities of Hitler’s Third Reich as he helped liberate the prisoners at Dachau. He was among the thousands of American and Allied forces who mercifully liberated living skeletons from Nazi slave labor and death camps across Europe in 1945. “Theirs were the faces of hope that we in the death camps had been praying for. four and a half years, crossing the Rhine River into Germany with General Patton’s Third Army. He was in the Battle of the Bulge and was hit by shrapnel, which earned him a Purple Heart. After the war ended, he aided displaced persons in reaching Italy. Later, Blumkin and his mother provided employment at the Mart to a number of Holocaust survivors who settled in Omaha. While a student at Technical High School, Blumkin was instrumental in helping the school retain the state diving championship. He won first place in every meet in which he participated, lettered three times during his high school career and made the AllAmerican High School Diving Team. In 1937, the Omaha World Herald wrote: “There isn’t a dive in the books that Louis can’t do with reasonable success.” His high school diving skills enabled him to entertain troops during the war, putting on diving exhibitions in England and in Germany.
