Truman’s decision focus of conference in Israel by RICK HELLMAN Editor of the Kansas City Jewish Chronicle From the rooftop of the Harry S. Truman Research Institute for the Advancement of Peace at Hebrew University’s Mount Scopus campus in Jerusalem, the challenge spreads out before the viewer. “You can see the new city, and then you look to the Old City and you see the Wall and the mosques on the Temple Mount,” said Executive Director Naama Shpeter. “You see the Mount of Olives and the hills of David. You see the Judean desert and the Harry S. Truman Arab villages and development towns -- Jewish settlements -- next to each other, and you understand it’s not an easy job.” Shpeter hopes more Heartland residents get a chance this year to see the view from her office and to know the work the institute does to advance peace. She was in Kansas City last month to meet with Truman Library and Museum Executive Director Michael Devine about an international symposium the two have been working on for nearly two years. The hope is that a delegation of Kansas Citians, Omahans and other American Truman devotees will join Devine and take part in the event, timed to coincide with Israel’s 60th anniversary celebrations taking place May 29-June 1. The conference is titled “Harry S. Truman, the State of Israel, and the Quest for Peace in the Middle East.” Continued on page 2
