Invented by a Jew

The PillCam By Deborah Katz Even in the medically-advanced 20th century, properly diagnosing gastrointestinal diseases was difďƒž difďŹ cult as doctors couldn’t see inside the full length of a patient’s small intestines without opening the patient up. (The small intestines are 20 feet long.) Then came the PillCam. Invented in 1990 by an Israeli engineer, the PillCam is swallowed by a patient and naturally excreted 24-36 hours

later after taking approximately 50,000 pictures during its journey in the body. Gavriel Iddan, the man behind the invention, conceived of the idea in 1981 after talking with an Israeli doctor who told him of the limitations inherent in traditional endoscopies (which used a camera attached to a long ďƒ&#x; exible tube). Iddan said he used military technology to make the PillCam, which was approved for medical use until 2001 and has been given to over two million patients since then.

We all face the possibility of having to deal with some sort of terrorism or other attack at some place or time. The realization is quite sobering. As Jews, we may feel more vulnerable. Unfortunately, our collective history shows this to be warranted. It is our responsibility to take precautions to best handle whatever comes. That mindset indicates a refusal to succumb to inevitable victimhood. The next scare might be the real deal. We must be prepared. Does your synagogue have a plan of action in case of an attack? Does your child’s yeshiva or day school have a specific EKſE RTQVQEQN VQ HQNNQY KP ECUG QH GOGTIGPprotocol to follow in case of emergency, and do they have practice drills? Are your local Jewish institutions in touch with law enforcement, and have they ever worked together to map out a procedure to follow in case of emergency? Individual responsibility is extremely critical. Do you pay attention to your surroundings, including where the exits are in rooms and buildings? Without causing undo fear, have you sat down and discussed these issues with your children, friends, and family? The actual statistical probability of a certain individual being present and involved in this type of incident is quite minimal. However, the objective is to have all bases covered before anything actually occurs. Panic happens when we are hit with the unexpected. Meanwhile, let’s all strive to keep calm and carry on.

The wild melee that recently occurred at the Town Center in Boca Raton, Florida, was a perfect example of the dangers inherent in chaos. Florida The College Of Jewish Studies Presents: “A Tale of Two Exiles: Tibetans and Jews” In Lecture Series Rome occupied Israel in the first century. China occupied Tibet during the 1950s. Both peoples spent their years of exile preserving their cultures as best they could, dreaming of a return to their homelands. How do Jewish and Tibetan experiences of exile compare? What do we have to tell one another? The Chaim Yakov Shlomo College of Jewish Studies (CYS) will be holding a lecture entitled “A Tale of Two Exiles: Tibetans and Jews.” The event will be held at The Shul, 9540 Collins Avenue in Surfside, Florida on Tuesday, November 19 at 7:30 p.m. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn about Tibetan-Jewish encounters – how Tibetans view Jewish experience and how the two peoples have been learning from one another – and hear a firsthand account of decades of such conversations. Professor Nathan Katz, Ph.D., academic dean of CYS, is a distinguished professor emeritus at Florida International University. He served there as the Bhagwan Mohair professor of Jain Studies, director of Jewish Studies, director of the program in the Study of Spirituality, and founding chair of the department of Religious Studies. Katz is the author of 15 books, including the award-winning Who are the Jews of India? and Spiritual Journey Home: Eastern Mysticism to the Western Wall. He has been awarded four Fulbright grants and is considered the leading scholar on India’s Jewish communities. He has studied, taught, and lived in

The concert is being co-sponsored by The Shul and the Young Israel Congregation located in Surfside, Florida. “We are really working hard to reach out to the local Jewish community to spread the word about this concert, shares Kayla Friedman, the concert co-chair. Partnering institutions include CAJE, the Galbut JCC, the Jewish Museum of South Florida, the Holocaust Memorial, and the Holocaust Education Teacher Institute. Renowned Israeli violin maker Amnon Weinstein has devoted the past 20 years to restoring the violins of the Holocaust. lins of Hope Project. World-famous violinist Gary Levinson, senior principal associate concertmaster of the Dallas Symphony, will conduct the concert, which will showcase a number of these sacred string instruments – a concert that represents the victory of the human spirit over evil and hatred.
