Florida SHELLEY BENVENISTE FLORIDA EDITOR

IT’S MY OPINION

Reflections On A Difficult Year This year, the yin and yang of life took a disturbing turn. A terrible worldwide pandemic led to loss of lives, financial ruin, and devastating emotional repercussions. Civil unrest in America and around the globe added to the despair. The entire world turned

upside down. Life with its usual ups and downs went on. Covid-19 was not the only deadly disease to affect the population, and the shutdown was not the only factor responsible for stress. Yet through the gloom, there remained a ray of hope. Rosh Hashanah would arrive, as always, on the first day of Tishrei, and usher in 10 days leading to Yom Kippur, the holiest time of the Jewish year. Thankfully, a new start is coming. Observance of Rosh Hashanah is quite different from the way the new calendar year is celebrated in the United States. There are no funny hats to wear, horns to blow, or confetti to throw. There is no drunken revelry. Instead, we are compelled to examine the blessings and challenges of our lives and try to make peace, if not sense, of what has happened in the past year. If there are any regrets or errors on our part, we are encouraged to improve and do better.

The new year is open before us in a book of pristine blank pages, and we have no idea what the storyline will bring. The greatest of tragedies and the biggest strokes of luck often come unexpected – k’heref ayin, in the blink of an eye. It is important to maintain an attitude of gratitude, hakarat hatov, recognizing the good. Every day is filled with opportunities and hidden miracles. Rough patches in life are often followed by comfort and joy. We hope and pray for a good year. We may wonder if we will ever go back to life before “the new normal. Perhaps different approaches are in order and fresh paths can be explored. I would like to take this opportunity to wish my readers, family, and friends shana tova umetukah, a good and sweet new year. May the year be filled with blessings and good fortune and may we find the strength to go forward with the tenacity of human spirit that has become apparent in recent times.

Back To School With Teach Florida Teach Florida/Teach Coalition acts as a liaison for Jewish non-public school communities throughout the U.S., and works to assure that all students and schools receive government relief. Many schools have recently reopened their doors, and Teach Florida has been there every step of the way to support and help them navigate the challenges involved. Since the start of the Covid-19 crisis, the organization has advocated for children and families to make sure they have the resources they need during this time. Their impact includes providing 4.8 million free kosher meals throughout the country, including 490,000 meals in Florida. Among their other accomplishments are: provid-

ing a record number of scholarships for Jewish day school students in Florida; furnishing record vote-bymail requests; helping scholarship renewal families receive state scholarships; working with schools to receive their fair allocation of federal Covid-19 relief funds; partnering with Step Up for Students to bring in more scholarship funding; and navigating new schools through the scholarship application process. Teach Coalition is working around the clock in partnership with activists, supporters, lay leaders, and schools across the country to fight for safe and more affordable Jewish education for all children. Florida Torah Academy Of Boca Raton Begins New School Year With gratitude to Hashem, The Torah Academy of Boca Raton (TABR) has begun the school year as scheduled with in-person learning. Planning an interactive, rich curriculum is always a challenge, and this year everything took on added proportions. Schedules had to accommodate safe spacing. Considerations included the staggering of outdoor time. Designated entries and exits were planned. Every detail inside and out needed thorough analysis, ensuring that it met priorities of high academic and health standards. With the creativity of the entire staff in high gear, students were able to return to a school environment that responded to both the challenge of the situation and TABR’s steadfast duty to educate. Students embraced the new rules with openness and maturity. The social-emotional aspect of returning to school under these circumstances was an all-important factor to the youngsters. Division principals and TABR guidance counselors circulated and monitored student adjustment, actively guiding the faculty and acting as supportive listeners for student and parent concerns. The year is off to a good start. TABR students on the boys’ and girls’ campuses begin the new school year.
