Florida SHELLEY BENVENISTE FLORIDA EDITOR IT’S MY OPINION

True Love All Year Round It was hard to escape. The hoopla surrounding the recent Valentine’s Day holiday permeated popular culture. Ads selling roses, chocolates, and jew-

elry were everywhere. Images of hearts and cupids abounded. The countdown was announced on the news and in all the media. Men were encouraged to order their flowers early before bouquets were no longer available. Restaurants arranged special romantic dinners. Reservations were at a premium. It was hard, in some circumstances, not to feel left out. Traditionally, Valentine’s Day is the time that American men offer gifts and appreciation to their wives or girlfriends. It is touted as the opportunity to show one’s devotion to the special women in their lives. The shape of a valentine is a heart. It is the iconic symbol of love. What is the Jewish concept of giving honor to the women in a man’s life? Why don’t we have a holiday that is comparable to Valentine’s Day? Are Jewish

women taken for granted? Where is our day of recognition? The answer is simple and poignant. Jewish practice doesn’t need one day a year to bestow this honor. We demonstrate the tribute every week in our observance of Shabbat. Women are given the charge to kindle the Sabbath candles. They are recognized as the ones who bring light and peace into the home. In many houses it is a minhag (custom) for the husband to present his wife with beautiful flowers for the table. Every husband is directed to sing his wife’s praises in the beautiful tribute Aishet Chayil, (A Woman of Valor), a song written by King Solomon, extolling the virtues of Jewish women. Valentine’s Day is a once a year celebration. Jewish practice recognizes its women all year round.

Florida Justice Richard Bernstein Visits Torah Academy Of Boca Raton Michigan Supreme Court Justice Richard Bernstein visited the Torah Academy of Boca Raton’s boys and girls middle schools this week, where he shared his deeply moving message of perseverance and purpose. Blind from birth, Justice Bernstein has not simply overcome physical challenges, he has risen to the upper echelons of success in his profession and in athletics as an 18-time marathon runner and a Ironman Triathlon competitor. In an open, honest style, with ample opportunity for questions from the eager students, Justice Bernstein explained some of the mechanics of his life without sight. He pointed out that because of his inability to see people before hearing their perspective, he cannot prejudge them, enabling him to gain a deeper understanding and more empathetic view of those inside and outside his courtroom. Epitomizing his message, Justice Bernstein related that life is about taking the challenges G-d gives you and using them to increase your purpose and mission. Happiness, he told the students, comes from a life that is meaningfully lived. The Torah Academy of Boca Raton thanks the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County for their sponsorship of this inspiring speaker and their Justice Richard Bernstein speaks to students at Torah Academy of Boca Raton. ongoing support to the school.
