Mah Jongg mavens, show what you’re made of
C
oming August 13, the Gordon Jewish Community Center will be the site for host Michelle Tischler’s annual Mah Jongg Tournament. The tournament will take place from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 13. The tournament is open to all skill levels and there will be prizes throughout the day as well as breakfast and lunch. Jewish women adopted Mah Jongg as a pastime in the early 20th century. The game originated in China and was brought to America in 1920. Mah Jongg was seen as exotic and glamorous and caught on quickly. The first meeting of the National Mah Jongg League in 1937 hosted over
200 women, all of them Jewish and most of German descent. Although the popularity of the game has waxed and waned over the years, it has remained a prominent activity in Jewish culture because of the closeness of Jewish communities, particularly, the way in which Jewish communities stay together. There’s a fee to participate and payment should be made by Tuesday, July 30. To register, contact Marilyn Rubin at (615) 356-7170 to RSVP with your credit card number or send a check to the attention of Meryl Kraft at the GJCC, 801 Percy Warner Blvd., Nashville 37205. Mark your calendars now and get registered to take part in this popular Jewish tradition. c
