MPs call for Peres tribute Cross-party effort to secure Commons debate in memory of late Israeli leader

Conservative and Labour politicians this week led a cross-party effort to secure a parliamentary debate for MPs to honour the memory of Shimon Peres.

The call to Speaker John Bercow has been backed by Conservative Friends of Israel chair Sir Eric Pickles and Ian Paisley of the Democratic Unionist Party.

of Israel, described Peres, who died on 28 September, as a “towering figure, seeking peace and justice, a Nobel laureate, a statesman of courage and conviction”.

Oliver Dowden MP, whose Hertsmere constituency contains one of the largest Jewish communities in the UK, said: “Shimon Peres was a truly remarkable man and absolutely central to the history of Israel and the Middle East and the wider peace process.

“He was a genuine peace maker.

I think it would be appropriate for

Parliament to mark in some way the passing of a truly great international statesman.

“His death touched many of my constituents and I’d like what he meant to my constituents, to me and many parliamentarians to be properly put on the record as it has been for other great statesmen.”

Parliament held a special session to pay tribute to Nelson Mandela, a fellow winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, following his death in 2013.

Labour urged to expel Walker

Jackie Walker was removed as vice-chair of Momentum

Jewish leaders have called for a key ally of Jeremy Corbyn to be expelled from Labour, after she was filmed making unguarded comments about Holocaust commemoration and anti-Semitism.

Jackie Walker, who is Jewish, was removed as vice-chair of influential leftwing group Momentum after she was recorded in conversation with Jewish groups backstage at the Labour Party conference in Liverpool.

She has been suspended from Labour and may still face disciplinary sanction from the party.

This is the second such incident in a year for Walker, who was suspended by Labour earlier this year for suggesting Jews financed the slave trade, only to be readmitted at a hearing.

Off-stage at an anti-Semitism training event in Liverpool, she was recorded asking why Holocaust Memorial Day did not include other genocides (it does). She was also heard questioning why Jewish

schools need security and saying that she is yet to find a definition of anti-Semitism that she could “work with”.

The Labour Party suspended her soon after the comments were leaked and late last week Momentum’s steering committee voted seven to three to remove her from her position as vice-chair, citing concerns.

“Jackie’s actions at Labour conference, in her subsequent Channel 4 interview, and by not understanding concern caused by her statements, have led [us] to view her behaviour as irresponsible and lose confidence in her as vice chair,” they said.

The campaign group added that while they did not consider her comments antiSemitic, but instead found them to be “illinformed, ill-judged and offensive”.

They added: “Jackie should have done more to explain herself to mitigate the upset caused and should have been careful about statements on this and related subjects, whatever her record as an anti-

racist, which the committee applauds.”

Simon Johnson, chief executive of the JLC, said: “Jackie Walker has rightly been stripped of her position as vice chair. With leadership comes responsibility and she has failed to show responsibility with her repeated use of hurtful language towards the Jewish community. Sadly, she has continually looked to disrupt rather than engage and taking action against her will restore some much needed integrity to the Labour Party.”

However, she remains a member of Momentum’s steering committee, and the group castigated those who filmed and leaked the private discussions, saying this “undermined much-needed political education”.

Former London mayor Ken Livingstone – himself set to be removed from his position on Labour’s National Executive Committee – jumped to Walker’s defence, saying: “There’s a difference between ignorance and anti-Semitism.”

An Israeli pilot has died and a navigator has been injured after the fighter jet they were flying crashed on its return from a mission over the Gaza Strip.

The pilot was later identified as 34-year-old Major Ohad Cohen Nov, who had only recently been appointed squadron deputy commander.

The incident occurred on Wednesday, as both crew members ejected from the plane, which came down in flames.

While an investigation is ongoing, it is believed to have been caused by a technical

glitch, rather than enemy fire.

The F-16 was approaching the Ramon Airbase in southern Israel, following the Gaza sortie, when the jet came down.

The Israeli Air Force tweeted that the pilot’s death was “as a result of the ejection”.

They were returning from an attack on facilities in the Strip after a rocket was fired from Gaza towards the southern Israeli town of Sderot, landing in a residential area.

No one was injured, but two residents were taken to hospital with shock.

The chair of the Foreign Affairs Select Committee, who has been critical of Israeli policy, was this week condemned by Jewish groups for sharing a stage with Ismail Patel – who has been accused of supporting a sheikh guilty of blood libel.

Crispin Blunt, MP for Reigate, attended a fringe meeting at the Conservative Party Conference organised by Friends of Al-Aqsa (FoA), based in Leicester. He spoke alongside Hannah Stoddart, director of advocacy and communications at War Child, and Ismail Patel,

chair of FoA, who has caused concern with his support for Sheikh Raed Salah, who runs the northern branch of the Islamic Movement in Israel.

Salah is a veteran campaigner for Palestinian rights.

In a 2007 speech he was accused of stoking violent by means of racist incitement and for invoking a blood libel against European Jews.

The CST’s Mark Gardner said: “This meeting is somewhat ironic and surprising, given Ismail Patel’s support for the infamous Raed Salah.”

The military said naval forces stopped the boat in international waters and urged it to change course. When it refused, the navy said it stopped the boat and searched it, a process it described as “uneventful”.

An American billionaire has been caught up in the police fraud probe into Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his wife Sara.

Ronald Lauder, the son of Estee Lauder who inherited the cosmetics fortune, now heads the World Jewish Congress. Police say they want to speak to him about gifts in relation to Netanyahu’s travel and foreign trips.

The British government has joined world leaders in criticising the Israeli government for a new settlement in the heart of the West Bank.

Middle East Minister Tobias Ellwood said the announcement of 300 homes was part of a “worrying” new trend, while the United States went further, saying it was “another step towards cementing a one-state reality”.

A peacemaker, even World leaders – including the Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas – gathered on Mount Herzl to say goodbye to Israel’s last founding father In addition to numerous heartfelt personal recollections, many of those who took the stage alongside Shimon Peres’ Israeli flag-draped coffin atop Mount Herzl offered their visions of the peace that eluded the former president and prime minister.

President Barack Obama, the last of the 10 speakers, called Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas’ presence in the front row “a gesture and a reminder of the unfinished business of peace”.

Obama said: “[Peres] believed the Zionist idea would be best protected

when Palestinians, too, had a state of their own. The region is going through a chaotic time. Threats are ever-present.

And yet, he did not stop dreaming and he did not stop working... Now the work of peacemaking is in the hands of Israel’s next generation and its friends.”

Before the funeral ceremony began, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Abbas shook hands beneath jumbo screens flashing photos of Peres over the years. The two leaders have not formally met since 2010, during a failed round of US-brokered peace talks.

“I very much appreciate that you came to the funeral,” Netanyahu replied.

But Abbas was not among the leaders Netanyahu greeted in his emotional eulogy for Peres, whom he described engaging in “nearly nightlong discussions” about which came first – peace or security. Netanyahu thought security and Peres peace, he said.

“We were both right,” Netanyahu concluded.

“Peace will not be achieved other than by permanently preserving our power. But power is not an end in itself. It is not the real power.

It’s a means to an end. The goal is to ensure our national existence and coexistence.”

Peres was long a hawkish defender of Israeli security. He played a major role in establishing the country’s defence industry, nuclear deterrence and settlement enterprise.

But he was among the first of Israel’s leaders to warn about the threat posed by continued

control of the West Bank and became a leading advocate of territorial compromise for peace with the Palestinians. Only after his election as president in 2007 did Peres receive the kind of regard in Israel that he enjoyed internationally.

Among the estimated 4,000 mourners who gathered under a sprawling white tent at Israel’s national cemetery were dozens of foreign dignitaries, including Prince Charles and the UK’s former Prime Minister Tony Blair, France’s President François Hollande and Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Israeli politicians attended from across the political spectrum. Yair Lapid, head of the centre-left Yesh Atid party, arrived with left-wing Labor Party Knesset member Shelly Yachimovich. Likud lawmaker Yehuda Glick, an advocate for Jewish prayer on the Temple Mount, came with a bodyguard. A Palestinian gunman nearly killed him in 2014.

Former US President Bill Clinton, who brokered the Olso Accords that Peres helped spearhead in an effort to make peace with the Palestinians, referenced John Lennon’s peace anthem Imagine in his eulogy.

“Shimon could imagine all the people living in the world in peace,” Clinton said.

“In his honour, I ask that we remember his luminous smile and imagine.”

Clinton was part of a 33-member American delegation, which included Secretary of State John Kerry.

Amos Oz, an esteemed Israeli writer and a friend of Peres, argued in his remarks that a Palestinian state was the only option, saying there was “no choice but to divide this home into two apartments and turn it into a twofamily house”.

“In their heart of hearts, all sides know this simple truth,” he said. “But where are the leaders with the courage to come forward to make it come to pass?

Inspirational teaching at Jewish schools across the UK will be celebrated for a second time at an awards ceremony in January, in a joint initiative between Jewish News and Partnerships for Jewish Schools (PaJeS).

Last year’s inaugural event saw teachers recognised in four categories, and organisers confirmed this week that the 2017 awards would feature four more, covering both primary and secondary education.

“The new categories of awards will let us recognise as much good practice in our schools as possible,” said PaJeS executive director Rabbi David Meyer. “We look forward once again to highlighting the successes and achievements of our community’s schools.”

Meyer said the awards were “an opportunity to recognise the exceptional efforts of the teachers and staff in our schools” because “it is thanks to their dedication that our schools are effectively educating the next generation of our community”.

Last year’s event, sponsored by the Emmes Foundation, showcased the top talent from 120 Jewish schools, with awards for innovation in secular and Jewish studies, use of information and

communications technology, and inspirational leadership.

This year’s awards will be for Best Emerging Teachers, in their first three years of teaching; Modern Hebrew; Special Needs Education and Assistant or Deputy Headteachers – a vital yet often-unrecognised role.

All awards will be at both pri-

mary and secondary level and the judges include Meyer and his predecessor, Alastair Falk; scientist Lord Robert Winston; Sue Williamson, chief executive of the Schools, Students and Teachers Network; Karen Harris, managing director of Intu.co.uk and Jewish News editor Richard Ferrer.

PRINCE’S POIGNANT PILGRIMAGE Record bribe scam TO GRANDMOTHER’S GRAVE SITE The Prince of Wales has visited his grandmother’s final resting place for the first time – bringing flowers from his garden at his Scottish retreat, Birkhall, to lay at her Jerusalem grave.

The prince paid his respects at the crypt in the city of the Duke of Edinburgh’s mother, Princess Alice of Greece, after attending former Israeli president Shimon Peres’ funeral.

During the moving visit, the prince, who had long wanted to make the journey in honour of his grandmother, placed flowers – which he picked himself from Birkhall – at her grave.

Princess Alice’s remains are buried at the picturesque Church of St Mary Magdalene, above the Garden of Gethsemane on the Mount of Olives.

She died in 1969 and her remains lay at first in St George’s Chapel, Windsor. But her final wish was to be buried at the Russian Orthodox convent on the Mount of Olives near her aunt Elizabeth, the Grand Duchess of Russia, another ancestor of he prince’s, on whose grave Charles also placed flowers. Elizabeth was murdered by the Bolsheviks and declared a Russian Orthodox saint.

Alice was re-interred in Jerusalem in 1988, but it was not until 1994 that the Duke of Edinburgh visited his mother’s grave when he travelled to Israel for a ceremony honouring her for saving Greek Jews during the Second World War. In September 1943, the Cohen family, acquaintances from the Greek town of Trikala, asked Princess Alice for refuge. She hid them in her palace until the Nazis withdrew in October 1944. During that time, the Nazis sent more than 85 percent of Greece’s Jewish community to concentration camps.

A Jewish hedge fund manager based in London has been caught up in one of the world’s biggest bribery scandals involving African mining and a controversial Israeli billionaire.

Michael Cohen, 45, a naturalised Briton born in America, ran the European operations of hedge fund manager OchZiff from its London office. He was named this week by The Sunday Times as one of two

employees at the heart of U.S. authorities’ five-year investigation into a series of African corruption cases.

In them, more than $100million in bribes is alleged to have been paid in return for mineral rights.

Cohen, worth an estimated £335million, was one of London’s most prominent mining investors until 2013, two years after authorities first began their investigations.

Scot scoops Nobel In 1993, Alice was posthumously awarded recognition as “Righteous among the Nations” by the Holocaust Memorial, Yad Vashem.

Born Princess Alice of Battenberg in Windsor in 1885, Alice married Prince Andrew of Greece, becoming Princess Andrew of Greece. She saw little of Philip when he was a child after falling ill and being committed to a sanatorium.

In later years, she went to live at Buckingham Palace and was said to walk around in a nun’s habit, smoking Woodbine cigarettes. She founded an order of nuns and wore a habit to the Queen’s coronation in 1953.

A Scottish scientist has won the Nobel Prize for Physics for work he says he did “as an ignorant post-doc”.

Michael Kosterlitz, the son of German Jewish immigrants, shared the award with fellow British scientists David Thouless and Duncan Haldane for their work in the 1970s and 1980s. In a statement, the awarding committee from the Royal Swedish Academy

of Sciences said the trio had “revealed the secrets of exotic matter”. The statement said: “This year’s Laureates opened the door on an unknown world where matter can assume strange states. Thanks to their pioneering work, the hunt is now on for new and exotic phases of matter.

“We are hopeful of future applications in both materials science and electronics.”

Fed reassures members over cemetery plot sale The Federation of Synagogues has reassured families with loved ones buried at Rainham Cemetery in Essex about new non-Jewish burial plots being marketed there as investment opportunities.

It follows reports on Tuesday that Birmingham-based firm Harley Investments is offering 40 percent returns on plots at the East London cemetery, where 26,000 people are buried.

The new plots are on a 22-acre plot of land adjoining Rainham Cemetery which was sold by the Federation for £8million less than two months ago, but the Orthodox organisation said the land was now nothing to do with them.

“The Federation completed the sale of the unused land adjacent to the Rainham remains and will remain in the continued Cemetery in August 2016,” Federation ownership of the Federation.”

In its marketing material, Harley trustees said in a statement.

The Federation said the 22-acre plot, located on the western side of the site, was “a surplus” and put it up for sale in 2014. It finally sold in August for £8.3million, and came with planning permission for use as a cemetery.

It’ll be all lights on the big night An estimated 50,000 candlesticks are being distributed across the UK for the Great Friday Night Light – as part of the Chief Rabbi’s ShabbatUK initiative.

no Jew, regardless of their circumstances feel that they cannot experience that unique moment of peace when Shabbat begins.” He called for Jews “regardless of affiliation or observance” to get involved, citing examples of events, such as a ‘Shabbat Art Gallery’ at Hendon shul, which will feature work from Liora Rosenberg, a teaching assistant who died in March at the age of 20, having suffered a devastating bleed to the brain.

BADDIEL SHOW DROPPED David Baddiel’s Radio 4 show Don’t Make Me Laugh has been dropped after 120 people complained about contestants making crude jokes about the Queen’s sex life.

The show in question, which aired on the Queen’s 90th birthday, heard panellists including comic Russell Kane address the topic they were given, which was: “The Queen must have had sex at least four times.”

The BBC Trust ruled the panellists’ comments had been “intrusive and demeaning,” and set out their concerns in a damning statement.

“Trustees found it hard to imagine circumstances in which this broadcast at any time would not have given rise to significant offence,” they said, adding that it was “a serious breach of the editorial guidelines”. The Battle of Cable Street / News

Remember the day they did not pass 80 years on from the Battle of Cable Street, Alex Davis revisits myths, truths and the relevance of this historic day for anti-racism efforts

N

estled in his cosy armchair down a quiet street in Ilford, it’s hard to imagine the serene figure in front of me as anything but gentle and welcoming. With typical pride, the 94-year-old great-grandfather points to pictures of his family while offering a hearty selection of biscuits.

And yet, as the conversation turns to Cable Street, a transformation occurs in Willie Myers. His eyes suddenly exude an energy entirely unaltered by the passage of time and his commitment to defending his community becomes unashamedly clear.

“I was 14 when my anti-fascist involvement began,” he recalls. “A friend convinced me to join the Young Communist League and I began feeling it was my duty to oppose Oswald Mosley’s British Union of Fascists. We all did.”

Formed in October 1932, the British Union of Fascists (BUF) claimed a peak membership of 50,000 in mid-1934. Yet, by 1936, it had fallen into steep decline. Increased violence, grossly demonstrated during a mass rally at London’s Olympia, and the movement’s growing anti-Semitism began deterring much of its conservative support. Even the media largely ignored the rising radicalism of this weakening force in British politics.

But when the BUF announced its intention to march through the East End on 4 October 1936, its residents took notice. Willie joined a crowd of at least 100,000 anti-fascist protestors seeking to prevent 3,000 or so black-shirted members of the BUF marching through the predominantly Jewish quarter of London. The crowd was diverse: a united front of Jews, Communists, Irish dockers and trade unionists.

What followed was a violent confrontation,

not between the two belligerents as is commonly believed, but between the anti-fascists and the 6,000 police officers, who were under orders to protect the marchers. In total, around 80 anti-fascists were arrested and at least 73 police officers injured. But the fascists did not pass and the legacy of Cable Street was born.

Defeat in victory?

Although the anti-fascists were quick to praise their own efforts, most scholars now accept that Cable Street was, at best, a symbolic demonstration of popular hostility against fascism and anti-Semitism. An important marker, yes, but in reality, the consequences were dire for the Jewish community.

The following weekend witnessed the worst incidence of anti-Jewish violence in the interwar period, the infamous ‘Mile End Pogrom’. Around 150 to 200 fascist youths smashed up Jewish shops and houses, and even threw an elderly Jewish man and young child through a window. The backlash wasn’t limited to London either: similar episodes occurred in Leeds and Manchester. AntiSemitism worsened to such an extent that the Jewish People’s Council, the leading force in East End Jewish anti-fascism, warned the following summer of the fascist “terrorism which appears to increase week by week”.

The historical record also reveals that Cable Street renewed sympathy towards the BUF. The violent response by those opposing Mosley was successfully spun as an illegal blockade of a march organised with police permission.

The result was significant: the BUF’s membership increased by several thousand and the party mustered a remarkable 18 percent of the popular vote in local elections the Above: A sign and mural commemorate the Battle of Cable Street.

Perhaps most revealingly of all, almost exactly one year later, a near identical battle took place in Bermondsey, just one mile south of the river. Again, more than 100,000 antifascists faced a column of approximately 3,000 Blackshirts, with the resulting violence leading to 113 arrests. Its very existence stands as stark evidence against the finality of Cable Street.

Inspiring a new generation Why, then, has Cable Street entered popular memory as the turning point in the defeat of British fascism? If the Battle seemingly made little difference to the anti-fascist struggle of the 1930s, shouldn’t it be a mere footnote in history?

Sitting with us in Willie’s home is his grandson, Natan Doron. Now a Labour councillor, Natan speaks eloquently of his grandfather’s influence on him.

“I recall Willie taking me to Cable Street at a young age. I’d recently begun learning about the Holocaust and Cable Street offered a very different message.

“I feel like my grandpa’s generation did the heavy fighting and their struggle resulted in opportunities for future generations. It has certainly formed an important part of my own politics. Cable Street taught me that you have to fight for change and that progress isn’t inevitable.”

So perhaps the significance of Cable Street lies in its influence on subsequent generations.

But what of the literal fighting itself? The violence of the day forms an important, but perhaps uncomfortable, part of the Cable Street story. It mustn’t be forgotten that the ‘heroes’ of Cable Street fought directly with the Metropolitan Police. Admittedly, the anti-

fascists believed the establishment’s tolerance of Mosley’s fascists made the police a legitimate target, but can violence ever be justified?

“That’s a tricky one,” replies Willie. “I think violence should be a last resort, but I wouldn’t hesitate to fight back even today if it was necessary.”

Another veteran, not of Cable Street but of the militant 43 Group, goes further. Maurice Podro fought the resurgence of fascism in postwar Britain and his response is unambiguous.

“I am a firm believer that you fight violence with violence. I don’t see it any other way.”

Drawing the right lessons But if you don’t believe in violence as a solution, what lessons can be taken from Cable Street?

According to a spokesman for the anti-racism organisation, HOPE not hate, “Cable Street showed how important it was to forge common unity in the face of organised hatred, and to stand up alongside vulnerable communities.”

Unity in the face of adversity is a strong message. But it must be peaceful, says the historian Daniel Tilles. He admires the courage of the anti-fascist protestors, but warns of drawing the wrong lessons from Cable Street.

“Far-right movements rely on a victimhood narrative and create conflict to drum up interest,” he explains. “By starving them of attention, they remain rooted to the fringes.”

Today’s fascists are, fortunately, far smaller in influence. It’s hard to imagine 300 – let alone 3,000 – right-wing sympathisers marching through Golders Green.

Or is it? My discussion with Willie concludes with his chilling warning: “When I shut my eyes and listen to Farage, all I can see is Mosley staring right back at me.”

‘Let’s create a new climate’ As Israel’s ambassador to the UK, Mark Regev does not shy away from tough conversations and sees possibilities for peace, he tells Jenni Frazer

srael’s ambassador to the UK, Mark Regev, has an upbeat message for the Jewish new year. He says: “There is something very interesting happening in the region. Because of common threats coming from Iran and groups like Isis, we are seeing a strategic realignment, where today Israel is talking to more Arab states than ever before in the history of the Jewish state. We have peace treaties with Egypt and Jordan, but I am talking about other countries who were traditionally hostile to Israel or very stand-offish to Israel but today we are having conversations, we are in communication with them.”

Regev, formerly Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s spokesman and in post in the UK since March, has hit the ground running since his arrival, making a point of speaking at challenging venues and engaging with the unexpected. His most recent encounter was a first for an Israeli envoy — a head-to-head debate on LBC with the PLO representative in Britain, Manuel Hassassian.

Regev says the broadcast was “respectful and a substantive discussion of many issues.” But he is keen to point out that not only has he frequently engaged with Palestinians before now, but the very fact of the encounter is a red flag to the “haters”, as he terms the boycotters of Israel. “The

people who would blacklist me, boycott me, shut me down and not let me speak — but the representative of the Palestinians in London is engaging with me. So what are they all about?”

The ambassador also points to the healthy bilateral trade figures between Britain and Israel – “a doubling in the last decade” – as another sign that the boycott campaign has “completely failed”. He says: “Britain is our second largest export market after the United States.” Both countries, he says, are keen to see that relationship continue and grow, and he revealed that Israel has been in preliminary talks with Britain about “codifying” a trade deal in the wake of the Brexit vote.

“My clear impression from speaking to British officials is that they understand the importance of the Israeli relationship and they want to pursue it”.

Israel has been holding informal talks with International Trade Secretary Liam Fox and the Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Greg Hands — “so that when it becomes relevant, Israel will be ready to get started immediately”.

If the ambassador is enthusiastic about bilateral trade between Israel and the UK, he is even more so about a forthcoming series of events in 2017 leading up to the commemoration of the centenary of the Balfour Declaration. Foremost among these will be a festival, Tel Aviv In London, which Regev hopes will launch this month, showcasing the best of Israeli culture. “It’s a particularly exciting event, to bring the creativity, the vibrancy of Tel Aviv, and expose it to people, whether it’s cuisine, culture, music, art, and to show a side of Israel people aren’t familiar with.”

He is upbeat about the way in which the festival will be received. “We have done a whole series of events this year, even before I became ambassador, and though there are

people of hate out there, they have not managed to disrupt or interfere.

“In the real world, the boycotters are a complete failure. We have to show what Israel is really about, and not let people filled with hate set the agenda.”

that that we hate.’ It’s such a lie. They have taken traditional hatred of the Jewish people and have transposed that to the Jewish state.

They demonise the Jewish state the way they demonised the individual Jew. We are not talking about criticism of Israel; but you see

I intend to bring Israel’s positive message to groups across this country,

that’s my goal”.

Those who “refuse to meet me out of hate,” he says, “are exposing themselves for exactly who they are.

If someone so demonises Israel that they refuse to engage, what does that say about them? Those haters say: ‘We’re not against Jews, it’s just the Israelis and the Zionists

in some quarters this irrational hate… there’s only one word for them.”

Nevertheless, the ambassador is optimistic about the possibilities for regional peace. He says: “Today we are having conversations, we are in communication with other states in the Middle East. For many years, the assumption was that Israel makes peace with the Palestinians and that opens up the Arab world for Israel. Maybe we are seeing the beginning of the opposite, in other words, by changing the atmosphere in the region, by greater dialogue between Israelis and Arabs, between the state of Israel and Arab governments; there is a new climate which will have a positive impact on the Israeli-Palestinian track. That offers a certain amount of optimism as we enter the new year.

“Jewish people face challenges. We see hatred in Europe, we see turmoil in the Middle East, we see Islamic extremism – but there aren’t only challenges, there are also opportunities. And this realignment between us and the pragmatic Sunni states — this is a small revolution, and it’s something we have to nurture.”

Armed attacker storms synagogue RUSSIA Russian police have beefed up security around a synagogue in Moscow following what they said was an attempted attack by an armed resident during which a security guard sustained mild injuries.

The incident happened on Saturday at the Moscow Choral Synagogue, where the alleged attacker, carrying a canister of petrol and a gun, lightly wounded a security guard during a struggle, the RIA Novosti news agency reported.

Police detained the suspect,

who threatened to burn down the building, according to the report.

The Moskovskij Komsomolets daily identified the injured security guard as Oleg Demshin, 35. He suffered injuries to his hand, the paper reported.

Demshin, a father of one, prevented the suspect from entering the building and other security guards overpowered him at the entrance, according to the report. He has worked at the synagogue for two years.

Here is the news, before it happens It’s that time of year again when we get to make predictions about the year to come, forget them, then remember them if they come true.

The good news is that, for Jews, 5777 will almost certainly involve disappointment, disbelief, disenchantment and disgust, so there’ll be plenty to talk about. And not all of the woe will relate to Jeremy Corbyn and the Labour Party. Some of it will come from anti-immigrant politicians in Europe.

At home, Momentum will gather some, banning Jewish Labour candidates (on account of them being foreign agents), adopting Hamas as a Labour affiliate (on account of its ‘values-driven’ charter) and re-branding antiZionism as a ‘much maligned, much misunderstood force for good’.

To the right, a new crop of neo-fascist foul-mouths will coalesce in shaven-headed euphoria after election victories for anti-immigrant parties in France (Front National) and Germany (Alternative for Germany). They will mainly target Muslims, but occasional Jews will be abused with illiterate online offerings ‘just to spice things up’. In London, safety-conscious Jews will pilot a security feature called ‘moats’. These will be introduced around shuls, schools and other communal institutions and will involve any building within 50 metres of a Jewish perimeter fence being razed to the ground to let security guards in watch-towers identify attackers. The government will pay.

Finally, it will be a good year for Jews in entertainment, with rapper Honey G winning X-Factor, Judge Rinder winning Strictly and the guy from Carmelli’s replacing Paul Hollywood on Bake-Off. But there will be sadness, too, as Stacey Solomon gets bitten on the bottom by a giant bottom-biting spider while hosting a spin-off show for I’m a Celebrity. “Get me out of here,” she’ll be heard screaming, as the hairy dangler sank its fangs in.

THE HERO HEALER An injured soldier who saves children is just one of Shaare Zedek’s superheroes. Noga Tarnopolsky met him

I

f Asael Lubotzky were a doctor in the UK, heads would turn when he entered a hospital. Handsome, confident and with a ready smile, he is the sort of man who attracts attention, but it is the specially modified crutches on which he leans that would set him apart. Sadly this is not the case in Israel, where the sight of a young man with battle scars is all too commonplace and where Lubotzky, the senior resident in pediatric medicine at Jerusalem’s iconic Shaare Zedek hospital, inhabits two worlds, as that of healer and of the walking wounded.

If people stare at Lubotsky in the hospital, it is not because they are fascinated by his crutches with torches on the handles and suction pads on the base, but because they recognise him as the young doctor who has become something of a celebrity since publishing a memoir that turned into a local bestseller.

His book, From the Wilderness and Lebanon, is about his experience of battling the Shiite militia Hezbollah in Lebanon where, in 2006 at the age of 23, he was a lieu lieutenant in the Golani brigade commanding a platoon of 30 soldiers.

Lubotzky was almost killed when a missile registered a direct hit on the spot on which he was standing in the tank. He survived with extensive wounds and with one leg so badly mangled his doctors were close to amputating it.

Lubotzky’s circumstances are extraordinary by any standard, but at Shaare Zedek, which in English means Gates of Justice, they have been treating the war wounded for almost 115 years and the hospital permeates with stories like his that beggar belief.

Jewish family ties play no part in US election I was surprised to read Mike Gold’s letter (Jewish News, 22 September) in which he wrote that “Hillary Clinton’s grandchildren are part Jewish, as her daughter Chelsea is married to a Jew” as as if to show that she can be assumed to be more supportive of Jews and Israel than her rival Donald Trump.

As far as I am aware, Chelsea Clinton [right] has never converted to Judaism, unlike Ivanka Trump [left] who has done so and, so I am told, leads a Torah-observant lifestyle.

So the latter’s children are Jews but the former’s are not.

In any case, I suspect that the US Presidential candidates’ family connections will have little impact on their political decisions, so Mr Gold’s observations are entirely irrelevant.

My Board of Deputies colleague Roslyn Pine chastises Yachad for not upping sticks and moving to a country (Israel) about which they are so passionate (Jewish News, 22 September). Her letter is addressed from the postcode N3 which is, as far as I am aware, yet to be part of Israel.

GOOD RABBIS DO NOT MAKE CRUEL COMMENTS I was deeply saddened to read Rabbi Mizrachi’s remarks (Jewish News, 8 September), that disabled people are being punished for the sins of parents and ancestors.

Has he considered how disabled people feel when they hear such views? Do disabled people need to suffer further by being reminded that their parents and ancestors have caused their problems? I’ve always thought we Jews are warm and supportive of one another. Rabbi Mizrachi’s beliefs are deeply offensive and he should not be lecturing

SORRY JEREMY, TURNS OUT YOU’RE A MENSCH On reading Jeremy Corbyn’s new year message (Jewish News, 29 September), I felt deeply contrite that the Jewish community should have been maligning him so widely for his perceived indifference to our feelings and sense of identity.

How could this possibly be said of a man (i) who knows precisely that Rosh Hashanah is on our religious radar; (ii) who appreciates that it is of such great consequence to Jews; (iii) who feels such a personal and instinctive urge to wish all members of our community well for the coming year; (iv) who knows the term ‘Shana Tova’ and wishes to direct it not only to us, but to ‘Jews around the world’; (v) whose impressive Hebrew vocabulary enables him to go far beyond the usual slogan, ‘Shana Tova’, and include the graphic adjective, ‘umetuka’; (vi) focused on the fact that the festival is ‘a sacred and beautiful time for contemplation, celebration and new beginnings’.

Any amateur literary analyst would have been able to detect the authentic depth of feeling and sense of identification underpinning Mr Corbyn’s message, his sensitivity to our spiritual tradition and profound knowledge of our religious and literary heritage.

No wonder so many in our community are now beginning to become convinced that his future leadership will usher in a veritable golden age for the Jews of this country!

THE CHIEF Rabbi has criticised a controversial Orthodox minister who claims sick children are being punished for sins in a former life, in the week 600 people signed a petition calling for the US-based rabbi to be banned from the UK. Rabbi Yosef Mizrachi, who lectured children in the UK two years ago and is understood to be planning another visit next week, was roundly condemned as a “hate preacher” by community members and representatives.

Videos online show Mizrachi telling Jewish children that “God only wants [the disabled child] here 40 years to suffer… Why? You spoke bad about people for the previous life, now you going to feel what it is to live 40 years without be able to say a word [sic].”

Mizrachi, who said this week that his UK visit would be a private affair held in someone’s house, has also suggested that Ashkenazi Jews were killed in the Holocaust because they went to college.

Reform ‘Prevent’ strategy so we can finally ‘Engage’ MAAJID NAWAZ

T

he terrible summer of terrorist violence that rocked Europe has come to an end. Given those multiple attacks, it may seem strange that the Liberal Democrats – my own party – voted to scrap Prevent entirely at their recent conference. To say that Prevent suffers from a brand deficit would be a gross understatement. To pretend it is perfect would be to only add to its troubles. But well-meaning liberal multiculturalists and fearful Muslim community groups should be aware of our allies in the anti-Prevent camp – dogmatic Islamists and far-left agitators – who will never be satisfied with any form of counter-extremism strategy.

This must be the starting point in reforming Prevent, for there are many myths peddled by the dogmatists about Prevent.

relies on the assumption of a linear trajectory from basic religiosity to extremism – often referred to as the conveyor belt theory – is simply false.

It must also be recognised that narrowing radicalisation down simply to foreign policy grievances is a sixth-form style debate technique that may win community applause, but lacks substance.

Prevent recognises that the path to

extremism is far more complex, involving issues of policy grievance, alienation, identity and ideology.

To smear Muslims supportive of counterextremist efforts as somehow not Muslim enough, is to be complicit in the far-right narrative that all Muslims are secretly sympathetic to extremists.

Outside the dogmatists peddling such myths to deliberately undermine Prevent, there are many who have simply not read the policy and have adopted this propaganda as fact.

But to ‘prevent’ something does bear an inherently negative connotation. Ordinarily this may not be an issue. Preventing climate change, after all, does not suffer from a similar brand deficit. But here it has come to matter.

Based on this reality, we should endorse a change of this strategy’s name, rebooted as the more positive Engage.

A relaunched Engage should substitute the troubled term “British values” with the

more meaningful, specific and universal term “liberal values”. It should kick off big, setting up a Privacy and Civil Liberties Board to maintain the necessary balance between preventing terrorism and protecting our human rights.

This board should raise its concerns through our courts. Overall control for Engage should belong to the Department of Communities and local Government.

Extremism is real. It will be with us for a generation. And it costs lives.

It is all of our duty to challenge this extremism. There is obviously more to do in combating any form of bigotry than merely outlawing its violent manifestations.

To suggest that nothing should be done beyond law enforcement is as naive as suggesting climate change also be dealt with only through legislation.

Some form of national policy designed to curtail extremism is therefore a necessity.

It is time for us all to do counter-extremism, better. It is time to reform Prevent. Let us instead Engage.

A Jewish presenter or a presenter who’s Jewish?

’m not a Jewish news presenter. I’m a journalist and a news presenter who happens to be Jewish – and I am proud of being both. There have been times in my career, however, when being both has been far from easy.

During my 20 years as a journalist I’ve worked on many different stories about the Israel-Palestine conflict. Inevitably, all reporting comes with criticism and complaints of bias, but the view wherever I’ve worked is that as long as it’s coming in equal measure from both sides, you’re probably getting it about right.

In July 2014 operation Protective Edge quickly developed into a full-scale conflict with round-the- clock coverage. As the bombs rained down on Israel and Gaza, the strength of anti-Israel feeling quickly intensified to a level not seen before in this country.

There came a point in our daily morning

meeting when I realised I was one of the few voices in that room trying to reflect Israel’s stance. What about the tunnels, I asked? What about the bombs terrifying tens of thousands of innocent Israelis?

But with our news wires flooded with pictures of so many innocent Palestinian children, injured or killed, my pleas fell on deaf ears.

I don’t believe this is because my colleagues were anti-Semitic or even necessarily anti-Israel.

But this situation was clearly viewed as another example of the mighty US-backed Goliath of Israel versus the disenfranchised and, in many cases, helpless Palestinians.

Live, on air, I interviewed Israeli politician after Israeli politician, some of whom were more hardline than others, and had to grill them as any journalist would.

Had a representative from Hamas been available, I would have given them the exact same treatment, but they had all gone underground.

friends berating me for my questioning and Sky’s coverage of the conflict.

I had extended family phoning querying if I’d been under strict orders to ask tough questions and, ‘didn’t I know their son /daughter was in the army?’ I was also trolled viciously on Twitter by fellow Jews who wrote: ‘How can you call yourself a Jew?... Where is your shame?’

Being in the public eye means you have to have a pretty thick skin and you learn to take most criticism with a large pinch of salt.

But this was different. I was under attack for asking difficult questions – fair questions, I believe, that needed answering.

But the line of questioning wasn’t so much

the problem; it was because I, a Jew, had the audacity to ask them.

It is something I have asked myself time and time again since.

Can I not be a journalist and a Jew? Is there such a thing as neutral when the lives of your friends, family and people are at stake?

Israel, unfortunately, will always feature on the news. But while my heart may be divided, my head – my job – is to report and present.

People can troll but no one really knows what it’s like to sit in that chair, on air, as a Jew and a journalist, unless you’ve experienced it yourself.

Face-to-face with Peres’ extraordinary legacy JOHN WHITTINGDALE, MP FORMER GOVERNMENT MINISTER

s world leaders gathered last week in Israel to commemorate the life of Shimon Peres, I and six of my Conservative parliamentary colleagues were already in the country on a visit organised by Conservative Friends of Israel. It was 23 years since I had visited Israel as a newly-selected parliamentary candidate along with then-aspiring MPs like David Lidington and Alan Duncan. This time I was privileged to lead the delegation, which was again intended to increase the understanding of MPs of Israel and its place in the region.

The news of Peres’ passing came halfway through our trip and was particularly poignant for me as we had had the privilege of meeting him on that first visit 23 years ago.

I remember well his patience in explaining the complexities of the conflict between Israel and the Palestinian people and his optimism

and determination that a peaceful solution could be found. His charisma and humanity were obvious and the warm eulogies of recent days emphasise the indelible mark this great leader left on many people across the world.

Peres was a giant, playing a leading role in Israel’s defining moments. Everywhere we went during our visit we saw evidence of his lasting legacy, from high-tech start-ups to peaceful co-existence charities.

We visited Sderot, known as the ‘bomb shelter capital of the world’, where new housing developments show the resolve of Israelis who are not prepared to desert their homes in face of constant rocket attacks. On a visit to the West Bank, we also went to see Rawabi, a new town development for Palestinians and the brainchild

of a remarkable man, Bashar al-Masri. He told us the Israeli politician who had given him most support to make it happen had been Peres.

The appetite for a two-state solution was palpable throughout our stay, with speakers often referring to one of Peres’ best-known achievements, the 1993 Oslo Accords, and their impact on launching direct negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians.

Peres’ passing defined the trip as one of reflection and great meaning, one I will not forget. In life, he championed co-existence and sought peace tirelessly; in death, he united adversaries who put aside differences to remember a remarkable man.

The presence of Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas at Peres’ funeral and his warm greeting with Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu cemented this, giving Israelis and Palestinians renewed hope for the resolution Peres so dearly wanted.

My visit to Israel demonstrated his powerful legacy, and I, together with the people of Israel, mourn his passing.

Why wasn’t Mrs Thing there?

s anyone who has sat shiva will confirm, it’s never just the people who come to wish the mourners long life who are noticed. The mourners, acutely sensitive to everything in their state of heightened grief, are always aware of who is missing. “Why,” my grandmother once inquired acidly, “was Mrs Thing not there? She had seven whole days to turn up and show her respects”.

Mrs Thing, it is to be hoped, had a halfway decent excuse for not showing her face.

But I wonder about the conversations that took place among the leaders and politicians in the past two weeks before Shimon Peres breathed his last, knowing that a funeral was surely imminent and that an informed decision would have to be taken about an appearance.

And surely, in a situation like this, with

the knowledge that a Jewish funeral has to be arranged quickly, people understand that there is little time for mulling things over and thinking about whether or not to turn up.

An appearance at this kind of funeral really separates the mensches from… what shall we call them? The “those-who-shouldknow-betters”?

So who made the journey to Jerusalem, and what messages did their presence send?

From Britain, Prince Charles arrived as the personal emissary of the Queen, who in 2008 had awarded Shimon Peres an honorary knighthood.

Charles, wearing a kippah embroidered with the Prince of Wales feathers and its motto, Ich Dien, or I Serve, which could almost have been Peres’ own motto.

Anyone who expected the Queen herself to attend is living in dreamland, and those who bitched that the Royals only attend events relating to dead Israelis need to take their heads out of the sand. Prince Charles is the heir to the throne; take heart, they could have sent Andrew, or no-one at all.

It was good, too, to see Tony Blair, and that man who used to be… oh, yes, I’ve got it! The prime minister. I mean David Cameron, who has dropped so completely out of public life that it was a slight shock to see him there.

But Cameron was a philo-Semitic prime minister, even if he did occasionally make it plain he didn’t always agree with his opposite number in the Knesset.

And then there was Bill Clinton, awkwardly wearing a kippah and paying tribute to a dear friend; and Barack Obama, now in the final days of his presidency but still dropping the affairs of state at short notice to make a heartfelt eulogy to Peres.

Obama showed his essential menschlichkeit by ordering flags on US public buildings to fly at half-mast. And it was he who recognised the courage of the Palestinian leader, Mahmoud Abbas, who bravely attended the funeral in the face of fierce criticism from many Palestinians.

But oh, heavens, the 17 Arab Knesset members, led by Ayman Odeh, were the Mrs Things of this funeral. If Odeh thought he was being principled by refusing to attend the Peres funeral, he is severely mistaken.

He will not be thanked for his determination to be among the missing.

Last word should go to writer Amos Oz, asking: “Where are our leaders now?” Good question, Amos.

Let’s hope some are paying attention.

Why we must protect the memory of Cable Street RICHARD BENSON

s CST’s chief executive from 2001 to 2013, I quickly lost count of how many times Cable Street was cited to me as the historically key moment in Jewish communal selfdefence. Many of us, whether CST volunteers, staff or trustees, saw ourselves as continuing that proud tradition. We were inspired by Cable Street and were determined not to allow anti-Semites to disrupt our way of life. I believe this will a core principle of CST as long as it exists.

While at CST, I helped Fiyaz Mughal to establish Tell MAMA, an organisation that monitors anti-Muslim hate attacks.

Now, as a trustee of CST, president of Tell MAMA and vice-chair of the Board of Deputies Defence Division, I am chair of the 80th Anniversary of Cable Street delivery group which is being organised by the London Jewish Forum.

helps to improve Muslim attitudes to Jews, then so much the better.

Our own problems have changed, but they have certainly not disappeared. Racism, fascism and anti-Semitism are not open and acceptable as they once were.

Nevertheless, hard core neo-Nazis persist in hating Jews utterly, while a generation of young British jihadists pose a deep and enduring terrorist threat.

In addition to all that, sections of the supposedly anti-racist Left have fallen prey to a so-called anti-Zionism that copies the old anti-Semitism, with the word Zionist where the word Jew used to be.

When considering then and now, remember that Cable Street was not the end of old-style British far Right anti-Semitism, which continued with surprising strength into the 1950s and 1960s, when Jews still needed to be defended physically from outright anti-Semitic fascists and Nazis.

Indeed, those street actions helped to form the bonds around Gerald Ronson and

others that led to a succession of groups, leading ultimately to the CST. The 1970s saw the peak of the National Front, which the Board of Deputies helped to expose as being “a Nazi front”.

Through the 1980s and 1990s, the British National Party spewed neo-Nazi filth, including the notorious hate-sheet Holocaust News. I will always remember leading CST’s security patrols in Golders Green at the height of the neo-Nazi nail-bomb campaign in 1999, thinking that Jews would be the terrorists’ latest target.

In 2000, what many people called the New Anti-Semitism began; a wave of ostensibly anti-Israel and anti-Zionist fuelled hatred that was inevitably anti-Semitic and took out its rage on Jews.

In truth, it was nothing new, it was just more noticeable than before. Now, it is not a wave of anti-Semitism, it is our reality. It is why we need to keep opposing anti-Semitism, whatever its source. It is why we need to keep remembering the lesson of Cable Street.

Lord Sugar’s all fired up!

It’s not always so easy to tell who will win The Apprentice, Lord Sugar tells Francine Wolfisz, but it changes the lives of those who do

T

here are winners and losers in this process, but for the winners it’s changed their lives – and that’s what I do this for,” exclaims Lord Alan Sugar.

The 69-year-old businessman spoke to Jewish News ahead of the new series of The Apprentice, which aired its first episode last night (Thursday) and revealed that, 12 years on since the popular BBC show first began, he still gets a “great buzz” from helping young entrepreneurs.

“I enjoy watching these young people grow a business from scratch, which is what I did 50 odd years ago. For the winners, it’s changed their lives. They are doing very, very well. They’ve bought houses, got married and had families. They’ve got security and they’re employing people and that’s what motivates me to keep going with it.”

As a case in point, earlier this year it was reported that 2013 winner Leah Totton was on track to make her first million with her drop-in cosmetic surgeries, while Tom Pellereau, winner of the seventh series, has seen his Stylfile nail care product firm generate a turnover of £1.5 million.

So it’s perhaps little wonder that the candidates were again lining up at the door to become the Jewish entrepreneur’s latest business partner and secure a substantial £250,000 investment in the process.

This year’s batch of 18 enthusiastic candidates, which include a sausage maker who believes he’s James Bond and an IT director who wants to become “an emperor”, were

first tasked with sorting the treasure from the trash and making as much money as they could from selling at the markets and to antique dealers.

Unfortunately for Michelle Niziol, a 35-year-old property consultancy owner from Oxfordshire, Lord Sugar was none too impressed with her leadership skills and she became the first casualty from the process.

Lord Sugar believes he can never guess the winner from the first episode – and neither can his right-hand man and fellow Jewish businessman, Claude Littner.

The 67-year-old, who is a former chairman of Sugar’s IT company, Viglen, said: “I always try to pick out the winner – it’s just in my nature, but invariably it’s impossible to do it and I challenge anybody to see if they can.”

One thing Sugar does, however, feel confident in is telling the candidates where they have gone wrong, and humbly revealed the path to his success – which began as a teenager by selling electrical goods out the back of a van he bought for £50 – was not

always smooth.

“Did I make mistakes? How long have you got?” quipped the self-made billionaire.

Referring to the first episode, Sugar added: “I tell you one bloke that made a mistake – the guy who bought the vase for £170, because it only cost us £7!

“In business you make mistakes, but you get a lot more right than you get wrong and that’s how you come forward and that’s how you succeed. I often tell people you learn by

your mistakes.

“In fact, for the apprentices who have won in the past few years and are indeed business partners right now, my famous line to them is: “I’ll tell you what not to do.”

Littner agrees that mistakes are at times helpful in business, adding: “If you are in business you try to do the best, you try not to make mistakes, but inevitably, if you are faced with decisions, sometimes you get them right, sometimes you get them wrong.

“I think the key is that if you are on the wrong track, you recognise it and correct that mistake as quickly as possible.”

Never one to hold back on how he feels, or come up with sharp-tongued repartee, Sugar said of past candidate Katie Hopkins, now a newspaper columnist known for her outspoken views, that she is “a bit like Piers Morgan on steroids”.

As for Donald Trump, Sugar describes his American counterpart as “not in my class” regarding his performance on the US version of The Apprentice, adding it was “a frightening thought that he could soon become the most powerful man in the world”.

Thankfully, right-hand woman Karren Brady lifted the mood with the suggestion that Hillary Clinton, not Trump, will triumph at next month’s elections.

“For me, personally, another woman leader means the world is a safer and better place,” declared 47-year-old Baroness Brady to raucous applause.

But it was on the topic of Brexit that Sugar became most animated.

“I fear for our country. I think we made a fatal mistake. People are saying things don’t seem too bad, but we’ve not even started yet,” he explained, before concluding with the trademark tongue-in-cheek humour that makes The Apprentice such compelling viewing. “I forecast as big a disaster in five years’ time as Great British Bake Off moving to Channel Four!”

The Holocaust of the bullets Jenni Frazer visits the site of the Babi Yar massacre to mark its 75th anniversary

E

ach one had a name, each with a face, each with a story”. The agonising story of Babi Yar, in which more than 33,000 Jews were murdered and thrown into a ravine outside Kiev, Ukraine, was revisited last week in ceremonies at the site to mark the 75th anniversary of the massacre.

But the anniversary event — with heavyweight contributions from Ukrainian president Petro Poroshenko, German president Joachim Gauck, US commerce secretary Penny Pritzker, European Council president Donald Tusk and the FrenchJewish philosopher Bernard-Jenni Levi — was not without controversy.

Together with the World Jewish Congress, and at the initiative of the mayor of Kiev, former heavyweight boxer Vitaly Klitschko, the Ukraine government has given its blessing to an ambitious plan to create a Holocaust Memorial Centre at Babi Yar, funded initially by private donations from a group of Ukrainian oligarchs.

But Rabbi Yaakov Dov Bleich, chief rabbi of Kiev and Ukraine, and Jewish Agency chairman Natan Sharansky were challenged at the launch press conference on Thursday morning as it emerged that hard-line Ukrainian nationalists had posted extremist messages on social media, following a presentation in the Ukrainian parliament by Israel president Reuben Rivlin earlier in the week.

Rivlin, who cut short his visit to Ukraine to fly back for the funeral of Shimon Peres, gave a robust speech in which he warned: “We must not play a part in the sin of forgetting or denial.”

He added: “National leaders who support anti-Semitic, racist, or neo-Nazi ideas will not be welcomed as friends among the family of nations.”

This is the central problem of modern Ukraine, fighting against Russian president Putin in the east and trying to re-invent

itself in a bid to make friends in the West and improve its trading position in Europe. But at the same time there is great discomfort in the land over those Ukrainians who collaborated with the Nazis and made it possible for the Einsatzgruppen to carry out what is called “the Holocaust of the Bullets”.

Rabbi Bleich told Jewish News: “It’s very important to understand the challenge facing Ukraine today. Children here — and that includes Jewish children — have had until now

no possibility of learning their own history.”

For years, the Soviet Union demanded that Babi Yar was effectively covered up and even today there is an insistence that those who died there were simply Ukrainian citizens — which they were — rather than having been killed because they were Jews.

For their part, many Ukrainian nationalists believe Soviet oppression was a direct result of the role played by Communist Jews.

One of the harshest critics of the direction of the proposed Holocaust Memorial Centre for the victims of Babi Yar is Vladimir Vyatrovich, director of Ukraine’s Institute for National Memory. He is angry that Ukrainian nationalists are painted primarily as collaborators with the Germans, and frequently cites a case of a member of the local policeman in Kiev who saved a Jewish boy and was himself shot by the Germans.

It may well be true, but it is probably the only case of its kind; far more prevalent, as World Jewish Congress director Robert Singer explained in a tough address at Thursday night’s memorial ceremony, were “those who looked the other way. Too many ordinary people watched as their Jewish neighbours were taken away and pretended that they didn’t see. Since World War II, Germany has taken responsibility for its crimes. Since 1945, it is hard to find a more responsible country than Germany.

Meanwhile, Vyatrovich has been appointed by the Ukrainian government to serve with the coalition putting together the Holocaust Memorial Centre, so many rows lie ahead.

Speaking at the launch of the centre, Natan Sharansky recalled the repeated attempts by the Soviet Union to erase the memory of Babi Yar. He said: “I was born in Stalino, later called Donetsk. I spent my entire childhood in the region of Stalino, Make’evka, Gorlovka, Artemovsk – places where dozens of thousands of Jews were killed just a few years before my birth. Thousands of people were thrown to die in the abandoned mine near which we used to play as kids. In Artemovsk, thousands were walled up alive in the mine tunnels.

And we lived near these places, played there a game of Red and White army – fascists against Red Army soldiers. We knew nothing about this. Later, in the 70s and 80s, we were often arrested and spent several hours in preventive detention on September 29, so that we would not be able to go to Babi Yar on that day. Those were the efforts of the Soviet government to wipe this day from our memory”.

Kiev mayor, and the Jewish philanthropists who have funded the project, for the initiative, saying: “They are totally right in their decision that for the bright future of the relations between our nations and to prevent such tragedies in the future, this centre is extremely important, not only as a memorial and scientific and educational centre, but as a basis for our new co-operation for a better world.”

Amid all the ceremonial glitz and the smooth speeches, it was sometimes hard to remember the thousands of Jews murdered in two long and bloody days in September 1941.

But Penny Pritzker, the US secretary of commerce, had a personal stake in Babi Yar. One hundred and thirty-five years ago, she said, her then 10-year-old great grandfather had fled Ukraine with his family for America. And had he not, she said, “my family’s remains might be in this ravine, too”.

And as it happens, my grandfather left Kiev at around the same time.

And through it all, I could not help wondering whether any of my extended family had ended their lives at Babi Yar, each one, as Pritzker said, with a name, a face, and a story.

t’s easy to get lost in Amsterdam, ambling along a grid of peaceful canals straddled by bridges fading into infinity. But rarely is the route from hotel lobby to bedroom such a mission.

It’s taken me several attempts to navigate the labyrinthine corridors of the city’s Pulitzer hotel, a property made up of 25 Golden Age canal houses, all connected to make a sumptuous fivestar maze.

The popular property recently reopened following a major two-stage renovation, positioning it as one of the most exciting hotels in the Dutch city; an additional 145 guest rooms have been bolted to the original 80, and an inner courtyard garden provides a contemplative escape from jangling bike bells that typically soundtrack a city stroll.

Convenience and comfort have been drawing curious visitors for the past 45 years, but it’s the hotel’s colourful, character-filled past that will really appeal to future guests.

Merchants, musicians, art dealers and even pals of Rembrandt have swanned through the 400-year-old corridors, and their traces are evidently reflected in the Pulitzer’s charming “old meets new” design.

In the Art Collector’s suite, flamboyant, modern pieces include a golden stool sculpted as a cupped palm and a tongue-in-cheek re-imagining of Frans Hals’ The Last Supper; in a Music Suite, one wall is decorated with rows of brass trumpets. Both rooms have

I wonder if original American owner Peter Pulitzer (who also happens to be the grandson of Pulitzer Prize founder and Jewish publisher Joseph Pulitzer) embarked on his 30-year flurry of property purchasing simply because he couldn’t decide which house he’d like to live in most.

Starting in 1960 with 12 elegant houses along the Prinsengracht and Keizersgracht canals, he opened Amsterdam’s first five-star hotel.

Over the years, he continued to buy neighbouring houses, fuelled by the motto “Your neighbour’s house is only for sale once”, building up not only his empire but also a loyal following.

Echoing its past as a former apothecary, the street-side entrance to Jansz is filled with brown bottles and large bell jars.

The neighbouring canal-facing bar is darker and more conspiratorial, and designer drinks include a fermented pineapple cocktail presented on a bed of hay.

Embedded in the centre of town, the hotel is close to many of Amsterdam’s places of interest, including being a mere five-minute walk away from The Anne Frank House and ten minutes from the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum.

A little further away is the Jewish Cultural Quarter, which incorporates the city’s Jewish

Museum, Portuguese Synagogue and the National Holocaust Museum for the Netherlands.

I choose to explore the city by canal on a Dutch national treasure, The Tourist. Built in 1909, the small teak wood vessel has since been converted into fully electric, but still retains her original grandeur.

Imaging tales of both near and distant past, I become entangled in my own daydreams as we drift lazily along the waterways sipping tea from china cups in the salon.

Once again, it would seem, I’m blissfully lost in Amsterdam.

Roasted carrot and caramelised onion soup

PREPARATION TIME 25 MINS

A soup using family friendly ingredients is always useful and even more so during when more guests are present and weather conditions turn colder while sitting in the Succah.

This can be made in advance and doubled in quantity if required. Roasting the carrots, onions and garlic together brings out a stronger natural flavour that all will enjoy!

SERVES 8

COOKING TIME 35 MINS

1 kg onions- peeled and sliced

METHOD

1 Heat oven to 200 ° C/180 ° C fan/gas 6.

2 Put the carrots and sliced onions, oil, garlic and thyme in a roasting tin. Season and

2 tablespoons olive oil 6 garlic cloves, skin on

3 Remove 3 tablespoons of caramelised onions retaining for the garnish.

Everything you want to know about your favourite Torah characters... and the ones you’ve never heard of

RABBI ARIEL ABEL Vayelech is the shortest weekly reading. It occurs – “beyn kesseh le’assor” – between Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur, and is therefore coupled with the theme of repentance.

In 30 verses flat, only nine more than the bare minimum to call up seven of the congregation, Joshua is briefed on his mission to conquer Canaan; the people are commanded to congregate each seventh Festival of Tabernacles for a mass public reading to inspire pilgrims to stay loyal to the Torah.

Moses is asked to prepare to die and issue an ethical will to his successor. Finally, Moses informs the Levites they must store a copy of the Torah next to the Holy Ark inside the Sanctuary. Moses’ last act will be to assemble all the nations’ leaders and repeat his ethical exhortation to them.

There’s a lot to pack into one short reading. Once Moses sensed that his leadership was at an end, he felt it wrong to spend any more time at the helm. Even – perhaps especially – the most excellent and talented leaders can find it difficult to retire.

Psychologists have likened the end of public office to a bereavement. Indeed, the best thing Moses could now do was die. This he did, but not before taking every precau-

tion to address those responsible for the welfare of the people to stay alert to the spiritual dangers facing future generations.

Moses’ best achievement then was to instruct them to keep a copy next to the Holy Ark. But would that get out to the people?

Today, we are blessed with the internet, a technology that strips away all boundaries that could prevent the message of Torah reaching the remotest locations.

Therefore, ex-congregational rabbis have a great life’s task to anticipate after retirement – namely, to take their teachings, the lessons they have taught and developed during their lifetimes, and spread them to every corner of the earth.

Unless a rabbi sleeps during his tenure, he will have plenty to pass on and no fear all that is left is to pass away. We are fortunate to live in this era, in which revealed knowledge, technology and science permit us to push boundaries out for Torah to which even Moses our teacher did not have access.

In one of the more dramatic episodes in the Torah, Zimri, prince of the tribe of Shimon, fornicates publicly with Cozbi, a Midianite princess.

Pinchas takes a lone stand against a flagrant violation of Jewish values and sensitivities.

This act of zealousness is rewarded with a covenant of peace being bestowed upon Pinchas and by him being the only person ever to be promoted on his own merit to

becoming a Kohen.

This promotion, along with the Torah’s version of the Nobel Peace Prize, God’s Covenant of Peace, meant Pinchas was no longer a private individual but a teacher of morality and Godliness.

While the circumstances surrounding Pinchas’ actions were both specific and unique, and perhaps challenging for us to comprehend, they do have a practical message for us today.

The Rabbis identify Pinchas with the priestly prophet Eliyahu, who appears later in Tanach and lived during the First Temple period in the northern kingdom of Israel.

During this time there was also corruption in the leadership of the nation, to the extent they had succeeded in enticing many Jews to idol worship.

In another dramatic showdown, Eliyahu challenges the prophets of Baal to a contest

in view of all. Both are to offer sacrifices in order to invoke Divine favour publicly. Eliyahu stands his ground against the 400 prophets and emerges victorious in this spiritual duel.

The similarities are clear.

Both Pinchas and Eliyahu are willing to risk their lives, reputations and communal standing for their principles.

Rather than accept the current reality as a foregone conclusion, they take decisive action to change the course of history.

We all have moments in our lives when we can either go with the crowd or stand up for what we believe in.

Such moments beckon as opportunities for us to exemplify for our children, show the world and indeed simply remind ourselves what we stand for and the values upon which our world rests.

Telling people how to dress shows there is something wrong with our society

RABBI SYLVIA ROTHSCHILD As a teenager, I saw a poster saying: “True equality will come not when a brilliant woman is promoted like a brilliant man, but when a female schlemiel is promoted at the same rate as a male schlemiel.”

The words are those of Bella Abzug, the feminist Jewish lawyer, politician and peace activist who fought for social and economic justice, for sustainable development and for the dignity of every human being under law.

Born in 1920 and raised in a deeply Jewish home, she quickly understood the importance of education and building relationships in order to organise the voice of the vulnerable and unheard.

She could daven beautifully by age eight – albeit from behind the mechitza.

A socialist Zionist intent on making aliya, equal rights and empowerment became a driver of her brilliant career.

At 13, on her father’s death, she said Kaddish for him for a year every morning before school, braving the looks of disap-

proving shul-goers, and learning what would become her modus operandi – stand up and do the things you believe in even if people don’t like it.

Studying political science in New York, she fought against an early manifestation of what would become McCarthyism.

At the same time, she was studying at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America and helping to support her family by teaching Hebrew.

When she won a scholarship to Columbia Law, her reputation grew. As a lawyer, she was a passionate defender of victims of poverty, racism and violence, and her reputation was such that she was elected to Congress in 1970 on a human rights platform.

There is so much more to say, but one statement resonates: “Judaism has had a very profound effect on me. Jews believe you can’t have justice for yourself unless other people have justice as well. That has motivated much of what I’ve done.”

Two stories that have made headlines over the past month seem at first glance total opposites, but at their root they tell the same tale.

On the one hand, in our British Jewish community, we had the letter sent by an ultraOrthodox rabbi to 5,000 Jewish women saying it is a sin to wear fitted blouses, short skirts or bright colours.

On the other, in France, we saw police force Muslim women to remove their burkinis, fullbody swimsuits with headcovers.

To me, both of these are indicative of a society that has got its values all wrong. Whether it’s telling us to cover up or to strip off, there is a pre-occupation with how women dress.

Both positions come from a feeling of loss of control and a fear society is going down the wrong path. But by focusing on women, the feelings become projected solely on to one gender.

In Liberal Judaism, we recognise the right of people to dress in any way they choose.

It should hardly need saying, but there is nothing in Torah that says it is “truly loathsome” to wear bright colours – as the letter stated.

Such statements simply perpetuate a

message that this is an acceptable way to behave towards women.

Of course, everyone recognises the need to be respectful in synagogues and other places of worship, and that certain clothes are required in certain situations. But these ‘norms’ must apply to all genders and be formed in a joint consensus.

For example, on the Bimah I always ask my barmitzvah and batmitzvah students to dress respectfully. The boys don’t wear shorts and the girls don’t wear miniskirts. Long hair must be tied back, so they can see the Torah, no matter who it belongs to.

In the month of Elul we are called to reflect.

There strikes me as something amiss when, as in the letter, the focus of that reflection is on the way women dress. We should use this time as a chance to work on ourselves as individuals, to reflect on what we as individuals can change, to apologise for our mistakes, and not as a chance to suggest that what someone might wear is responsible for the wrongs in the world.

The victory made it two wins from two for the Lions, while it was the Tigers’ first defeat of the season, though they remain top of the table on goal difference.

The one game in Division One saw Scrabble claim their first win – at the third time of asking – thanks to a 2-0 win over HMH, who remain rooted to the bottom of the table as the suffered their third consecutive defeat of the season.

JAMES HITS DOUBLE FOR TABLE-TOPPERS Lions Lions moved to the top of the Herts County Premier Division after they produced a superb performance to win 4-0 at Wormley.

James Gershfield opened the scoring early on, and they had effectively wrapped the result up thanks to two quick-fire goals before the break. First, Austin Lipman smashed home a half-volley, before Gershfield notched his tenth goal of the season.

The scoring was complete when man-of-the-match Lipman smashed home his second of the afternoon.

The win takes the Rowley Lane side two points clear at the top of the table, though they face a tough match at the weekend, taking on second place – and reigning champions – Standon & Puckeridge.

Brady boys bounce back to thrash Team Brady Maccabi returned to winning ways in the Premier Division as two goals each from Reiss Mogilner and Dan Cohen helped them to an 8-2 win over FC Team A. Rob Cohen, Daniel Harrod, Ben Kohler and Marc Rister were also on target.

Redbridge A made it three wins from three as Russell Goldstein’s hat-trick, coupled with strikes from Daniel Garfinkle and James Berkley saw them beat London Lions A 5-1.

Champions Raiders A hit Woodford Wanderers for six, Liron Mannie’s doubles, plus goals from David Dinkin, Dave Cohen and Ben Ellis helping them to a 6-0 win.

London Lions B top the Division One table on goal difference after Adam Abadi, Joshua Bloom and Daniel Mattey scored in their 3-1 win over Faithfold A. Redbridge B beat Raiders B 4-0, Richie Caplin, Carl Dobrin, Dean Ben Yosef and Anthony Cope all getting on the scoresheet.

Daniel Polak’s hat-trick helped Finchley City to a 5-1 win over Athletic Bilbaum, Gav Krieger and Alon Pinhas also scored. They’re joined on six points by Scrabble, who won 2-1 at Los Blancos, thanks to goals from Josh Bharier

and Danny Sherman Hendon B claimed their first win of the season as five goals from Adam Ellis, along with Glen Turner’s strike saw them win 6-1 at Brixton.

Catford & Bromley remain three points clear at the top of Division Two as they made it four wins from four thanks to a 4-1 win over RC UK FC, Joel Lassman, Callion McGregor and player-manager Jeff Gotch all on target.

Goals from Max Martin, Andy Smith and James Mandell saw L’Equipe beat Hertswood Vale 3-0. Jimmy Castle’s hat-trick, together with strikes from Rafe Neimam and Daniel Jacobs saw Redbridge C win 5-2 at Temple Fortune.

Seven goals from Richard Fogelman, plus Louis Taylor’s strike saw Faithfold B beat Mill Hill Dons 8-0, while Real Hendon beat Raiders C 3-0 thanks to player-manager Chaim Gothold’s double and Gav Noe’s strike.

In one Cyril Anekstein Cup tie, goals from Eitan Ben Zion and Eddie Sternberg saw FC Team B beat Boca Jewniors 2-0 as they booked their place in the second round.

Enduring a difficult summer due to him suffering from bad asthma, his first event back was two weeks ago at a 3K road relay race in Hayes – which he finished in a time of 9.40 – 14 seconds quicker than last year.

The 14-year-old JFS pupil then ran the third of four legs at the Championships in a

time of 9:07, which helped Shaftsbury Barnet Harriers to a seventh place finish out of 32 sides.

Bachar said: “This was a very tough match against an excellent team, it was a tight match. We controlled the first 30 minutes and after that they dominated.

“You can’t be disappointed with a draw against a team like this, this is a good result against a very strong team so this is fine.”

The Israelis next host Sparta Prague on 20 October.

CELTIC FINED OVER ‘ILLICIT BANNERS’

European football’s governing body UEFA has fined Scottish side Celtic €10,000 after their supporters displayed Palestinian flags during their Champions League match against Israeli side Hapoel Be’erSheba last month.

The actions drew a charge from UEFA, who viewed them as “illicit banners.”

UEFA rules forbids the use of ‘gestures, words, objects or any other means to transmit any message that is not fit for a sports event, particularly messages that are of a political, ideological, religious, offensive or provocative nature’.

Elsewhere, Maccabi Tel Aviv lost in Dublin after they were beaten 1-0 by Dundalk. Manager Shota Arveladze said: “At the end of the day the match was fairly even, but Dundalk is a very good and organised club and won the game. I can only congratulate them.”

The Italian Football Association has been fined €27,000 after supporters made a Nazi salute during the playing of the Israeli national anthem at a World Cup qualifier between the two countries.

A small group of supporters in the Italy end made the offensive gesture prior to kick-off at the game, which was held in Haifa on 5 September.

FIFA said the fine was for “discrimination and improper conduct amongst own group of spectators,” violating articles 58 and 67 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code.

Hendon United manager predicts a perfect season

Hendon United A manager David Garbacz claims his side will not only win the Premier Division title – but could achieve it by going through the entire season unbeaten.

Having seen his side go three points clear at the top of the table as they maintained their 100 percent winning start with a 3-1 win over Camden Park, Garbacz concedes there’s still a long way to go in the season, but says becoming the Jewish ‘Invincibles’ is something he’s thought about.

He said: “We will definitely be challenging for the title this season – nothing less than winning the league will suffice and we have full belief that we can wrest the trophy back this year. It is far too early

to talk about Invincibles, but I wouldn’t say it hasn’t crossed my mind!”

Sunday’s win was a hard-fought affair, and while they took the lead through Zac Lewis’ tap-in, a stunning strike from Jake Saunders saw Camden deservedly go into the break level.

However, second half strikes from Ari Last and Dovi Fehler, the latter of which came when Camden were reduced to ten men, saw Hendon make it four wins from four, during which time they’ve already scored 17 goals.

Reflecting back on the win, he said: “I was happy with the way we grinded out the win on a day when we were no where near our best. No team can turn it on week in week out, but the important thing is to get the

points when not at your best which is what we did today.”

And insisting there’s a lot more to come from his side, which could propel them to another title, and even potentially, accomplish it unbeaten, he said: “We’ve had a great start – the squad is in excellent shape and we have played some scintillating football at times this year.

“We’re yet to get everyone available for a match and there is a lot more to come, but so far we’re delighted with how the season has gone.”

Israel boss hoping for first World Cup points Israel coach Elisha Levy said he was confident his side could claim their first points of the 2018 World Cup qualifying campaign, ahead of last night’s trip to Macedonia and the home match against Liechtenstein on Sunday.

The double-header of fixtures come on the back of an encouraging performance against Italy, which ended in a 3-1 home defeat last month. Levy

(pictured inset) said: “You can’t fool the fans. They stood up and applauded because they recognised our effort against Italy and I hope we see the same effort in these games as well.”

While not realistically having a chance of qualifying for Russia, being in a group alongside Italy and Spain, where only the winners qualify and runner-up has a chance of reaching

the play-offs, Levy is looking for victories against their next two opponents – and the other side in the group Albania – to boost confidence ahead of their 2020 European qualifiers.

Also having to play down unrest from those players who didn’t make the 23-man squad for

the two games, he said: “I can understand a player expressing disappointment if he’s not invited. As long as no lines have been crossed and the things that were said were in a dignified manner, and it was, then there’s no problem.”


