Benjamin Netanyahu has denounced the campaign in the UK asking for Britain to apologise for the Balfour Declaration, suggesting it was driven not by a territorial dispute – but by the very existence of the Jewish state, writes Justin Cohen.

The Israeli prime minister’s comments to Jewish News came as Anglo-Jewry gears up to mark the centenary of Britain’s historic pledge and just weeks after the House of Lords launched a campaign to push for an apology for the 1917 declaration – a move he dismissed as “amazing”.

Addressing the second Jewish Media Summit in Jerusalem, he said: “The Balfour declaration recognised this land as the home of the Jewish people, which obviously had consequences later down the line.

“But if the Palestinians are challenging 100 years later even the idea that the Jewish people have a home here, you know they’re

not really gung-ho on a state, a nation state for the Jewish people. It’s very revealing about the true source of this conflict.

“It’s not about territory, even though that’s an issue. It’s not about settlements, even though that’s an issue – it’s not the issue. It was never and is still not about the Palestinian state. It was always about the Jewish state. The fact there was a challenge to the Balfour declaration 100 years later tells us we haven’t come very far.”

Although the premier didn’t say what he will do for the centenary, Mark Regev, Israel’s ambassador to the UK and the PM’s former spokesman, has previously spoken of bilateral plans to mark the occasion. A programme of events is also being finalised by the Balfour 100 Committee, comprising dozens of Jewish community and Israel organisations.

Illegal settlements to become legal An almighty row erupted across Israeli politics this week over a bill to retroactively legalise dozens of settler outposts that Israel’s most senior judges say are illegal.

The controversial Legalisation Bill, which passed its first reading on Monday night by 60 votes to 49, drew international condemnation from the United States and the UK, with Jewish groups here calling it “a dangerous step towards the end of Israeli democracy”.

But there was joyous celebration from Israel’s religiousnationalist politicians, led by Benjamin Netanyahu’s coalition partner Naftali Bennett, who said it killed the idea of a Palestinian state once and for all.

Israel’s opposition leader, Isaac Herzog, had earlier told the Jewish News-BICOM conference that he “vehemently” opposed the bill, saying it was “averse to all we know about the rule of law and international law”.

The vote was instigated by Bennett’s pro-settler Jewish Home party, which has fought to protect 40 families living in caravans in the illegal outpost of Amona, which is built on privately-owned Palestinian land deep in the West Bank, near Ramallah.

Amona, which is home to 330 settlers, has been slated for demolition on 25 December, following an order from Israel’s Supreme Court, after years of legal battles. It is one of about

Netanyahu had opposed the new bill which, if it passes, would retroactively legalise thousands of illegal units, arguing that it would leave Israel vulnerable to legal challenge in the International Criminal Court in The Hague.

However, in a last-minute deal with his coalition partners, Netanyahu is understood to

have agreed to legalise 55 illegal outposts, comprising 4,000 units, in exchange for an agreement to support the evacuation of Amona.

Heralding an “historic day,” Bennett said: “Today, the Israeli Knesset shifted from a path to establish a Palestinian state to a path of extending sovereignty to Judea and Samaria [the West Bank]. Let there be no doubt: the regulation bill is what will

spearhead the extension of [Israeli] sovereignty.”

In the UK, however, there was incredulity at the decision, with Jews in the diaspora being urged to speak up for Jewish and democratic values.

“This bill is about stripping Palestinian landowners of their land so that Israeli settlements can be built in the West Bank, but it is also a dangerous step towards ending Israel’s status

as a democracy and erasing the divide between Israel proper and the occupied territories,” said New Israel Fund chief executive Adam Ognall.

“Never before has the Knesset passed legislation curtailing the rights of Palestinians living under occupation and who cannot partake in Israeli elections.

“Its passage takes Israel down a slippery slope in which democratic values are under siege while the occupation is being entrenched.

“All of us who love and support Israel should be deeply concerned by these developments and should not be afraid to speak out.”

Yachad’s Ethan Schwartz said: “The Israeli government cannot claim to support a twostate solution on the one hand, while formalising the appropriation of private Palestinian land for Israeli settlement on the other.”  See editorial leader on page 12.

MP’s relief at racist’s guilty verdict Luciana Berger MP has welcomed the guilty verdict against a white supremacist who posted a series of vile and anti-Semitic comments about her and said it had had a “deep impact” on her.

Joshua Bonehill-Paine, 24, who lives in Yeovil, Somerset, heard he had been found guilty of racially-aggravated harassment just after 3pm yesterday, also his birthday.

“Today’s verdict demonstrates that under British law, those who perpetrate these horrific crimes can and will be brought to justice; and it recognises the British values of equality, tolerance and mutual respect that we hold dear, apply as much on the internet as they do offline,” she said after the three-day Old Bailey trial.

“The protracted campaign of vitriol and hate had a deep impact on me and on the people around me: my family and my fantastic team.”

This conviction sends a strong signal that online hate will be prosecuted.”

‘LABOUR WILL ACT TO RESTORE RELATIONS’ The first face-to-face exchange between Jeremy Corbyn’s new shadow minister for diverse communities and Jewish leaders has been described as “robust and frank” – as she acknowledged “there was a lot of work to be done”.

Dawn Butler (pictured), who was appointed to the new role this summer, held talks on Tuesday with figures from the Board of Deputies, Jewish Leadership Council, Community Security Trust, Labour Friends of Israel, Jewish Labour Movement (JLM), Union of Jewish Students and Holocaust Educational Trust.

The unresolved cases of Ken Livingstone and the claims of intimidation around Oxford University Labour Club (OULC) were raised – with a number of members of the delegation stressing it was not possible to engage in meaningful dialogue on issues of broader communal concern that Butler was keen to raise while those cases remain unconcluded.

Jewish News understands the Brent Central MP told the group the case against those implicated in the OULC case would be heard in January.

When challenged that this would be nine

moths after Baroness Royall produced her report into the claims, Labour sources told Jewish News there was a sharp exchange between JLM chair Jeremy Newmark and Corbyn’s political secretary Katy Clark, who sat in on the meeting.

Jewish News understands Clark defended the delays in dealing with the Oxford allegations and sought to explain the lack of contact between the party and the original complainants.

Newmark reportedly contrasted this with the speed at which other high profile cases had been dealt when individuals such as Jackie Walker were cleared.

JLM declined to comment on this exchange, and Butler reportedly said she was unable to discuss the Livingstone case as the former mayor is a constituent.

Butler said: “This was a robust, open and frank group discussion. Many issues were raised including certain live disciplinary cases.

“It is clear there is a lot of work to do, but I am determined that we will do what’s needed to restore the historically warm and trusting relationship between the Jewish community and the Labour Party that we all want to see.”

‘I’d love to see Jeremy in Israel’ A member of Jeremy Corbyn’s top team told a Jewish News-BICOM audience that he hoped his boss would one day accept an invitation to visit Israel.

Barry Gardiner, the shadow trade secretary, was speaking at the UK-Israel Strategic Policy Conference last week, and acknowledged that “there is a lack of understanding” about when anti-Zionism turns into antiSemitism.

A former American ambassador who advised two US presidents on the Middle East said he “hasn’t a clue” what Donald Trump will or won’t do in the region – and nor does anyone else.

Dennis Ross, who was Bill Clinton’s special envoy to the Middle East, and advised George Bush senior, said Trump’s “contradictory” messages meant that his approach, and its implications for Israel, were not yet known.

Ross has been described as a “key player in Israeli-Palestinian negotiations”. He highlighted Trump’s conflicting comments on issues such as the Iran deal, saying: “In the same speech at [lobby group] AIPAC, he said he was going to scrap it, then he said he was going to enforce it ... we don’t know what he’s going to do, but he will face a dramatically more challenging Middle East than any of his predecessors.”

He added: “Trump inherits the war in Syria, with half a million dead and 12 million refugees... If that were the only thing he was inheriting it would be quite enough, but he also faces proxy wars in Iraq and Yemen.”

Oxford University academic Sara Hirschhorn, who chaired the debate, set the stage, saying: “Obama’s red lines are now crimson with bloodshed and displacement. Meanwhile, the threat of terror has not declined.”

She said Trump had “taken quite an isolationist stance in opposition to regime-change and nation-building.”

Ross said Trump’s approach to Syria “has implications for how he deals with the larger question of the challenges Iran poses through the

use of Shia militias”, and said a “convergence of strategic interests between Israel and most Sunni Arab states” presented an opportunity for the US president-elect, with “practical cooperation below the radar screen”.

Arab states would be needed in any peace deal, Ross said. “The traditional model of strictly bilateral negotiations isn’t going to produce anything. The Palestinians are too weak, too divided to look at negotiations as anything but a concession, which they’re not prepared to make. Even if they were at the table, they couldn’t make any concessions, but maybe with Arab cover, it suddenly becomes possible.

“The same is true for Israel. They feel that any concession they make is going to produce nothing from the Palestinians... if they want to gain something, it will be from the Arabs”.

However, award-winning Israeli journalist Ehud Yaari, who is known for covering the Lebanon and Gulf wars, said Trump would not find “any reliable, dependable Sunni ally in the region,” and reminded the audience that Saudi Arabia, which is now run by a 31-year-old prince, “runs the risk of fragmentation”.

Yaari said he thought Trump would “try to contain the damage in the Middle East, rather than fix it, and this will leave room for the emerging players, such as Turkey and Iran”.

Ross said “clues” to Trump’s approach would come from his appointments for secretary of state and secretary of defence, but noted Trump’s deputy Mike Pence was already the one getting daily national security briefings.

During his presidential bid, Trump courted the American-Israeli vote, even opening a campaign office in the West Bank, where hundreds of Jewish settlers are eligible to vote in US elections. He has promised to roll back the Iran deal, support continued settlement growth and move the US embassy to Jerusalem.

Brigadier General Michael Herzog, a former chief of staff to several Israeli defence ministers and now visiting fellow at BICOM, meanwhile said the peace process “won’t be at the top of [Trump’s] list – there are more pressing issues”, adding: “A psychological desire to show that he is a deal-maker is not a strategic reason to prioritise it.”

‘GOOD NEWS AND BAD’ ON GROWTH OF TERRORISM Fragmentation of modern Middle Eastern states will continue to feed terrorism in Europe, but the unresolved Israeli-Palestinian conflict is still the main reason European Jewish communities are targeted.

These were the thoughts of journalists, academics and government advisers at an event chaired by BICOM senior research fellow Professor Alan Johnson, discussing the security threat from jihadi terrorism in Europe and Israel.

Dr Usama Hasan from the Quilliam Foundation, a former jihadist who fought in Afghanistan but now supports Britain’s deradicalisation programmes, said there was “good news and bad news”, with the threat “worse now than it ever was in Europe”, but noting “a lot more engagement from Muslim communities and others in trying to address this problem”.

Suha Halifa, editor of The Times of Israel Arabic edition, addressed the 2015-16 “stabbing intifada” in Israel, saying that while there had been some incitement, social and economic factors also explained the attacks.

“The Palestinian Authority says it’s the occupation, but the perception that is often ignored is that of the Shin Bet and

the IDF. They say hopelessness, poverty, anger and frustration are driving lonewolf attackers.”

Professor Shlomo Avineri, a former director-general at Israel’s foreign ministry and recipient of the Israel Prize, said there was also a wider geopolitical context to the rise of jihadism.

“Terrorism has to do with the Israeli-

Palestinian conflict, and not all terrorists are jihadists or Islamic fundamentalists; some are secular or nationalist,” he said.

However, terrorism being seen in Europe today stemmed from failed Middle Eastern states, giving rise to phenomena such as non-state groups such as Islamic State – an attempt to go back to the original structure of Islamic societies.

Anti-Israel activist’s new lease of life The Labour activist kicked off the National Committee of left-wing grassroots group Momentum for offensive comments about Holocaust Memorial Day has been quietly brought back into the organisation’s fold.

Jackie Walker, who was removed as vice-chair after she complained HMD did not include other genocides, has been elected onto the Conference Arrangements Committee, organising Momentum’s first full conference early next year.

Walker, who is Jewish, drew scorn for suggesting that Jews were “chief financiers of the slave trade,” but was chosen as one of seven conference organisers at a meeting of Momentum’s National Steering Committee on Saturday.

There have been three motions submitted in defence of Walker, who was also heard saying that she had not “heard a definition of anti-Semitism I can work with,” including one motion describing the “anti-

Semitism witch-hunt”.

Another Momentum member elected to the Arrangements Committee was James Elliott, a former Oxford student and lead voice at the Oxford University Labour Club, who has been mentioned in relation to allegations of anti-Semitism.

Richard Angell, director of Progress, Labour’s centrist pressure group said: “Jackie Walker was on her way out. But now she is back, in charge of Momentum’s internal democracy and the highly factionalised conference that will take place in the spring.

“She has neither apologised nor retracted her remarks. This is extremely disappointing.”

‘KING BIBI’ STATUE IS TOPPLED An unflattering gold statue of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was erected in Tel Aviv this week – only to be toppled hours later.

The premier, nicknamed ‘King Bibi’ on account of his manner and long-standing reports of lavish living standards, proved muse for sculptor Itay Zalait, whose guerilla golden depiction in Rabin Square was criticised by right-wing ministers.

But for hundreds of Tel Aviv residents, the satirical statue was a fine backdrop for selfies, until city officials ordered Zalait to remove it or face a fine. At this point, he invited residents to “topple” him.

Right-wing Culture Minister Miri Regev said it was “an expression of hatred towards Netanyahu,” but Zalait told Army Radio: “In social media, there have been tens of thousands of comments about King Bibi. I simply made it a reality and put it in its deserved place.”

Fresh ideas on reviving the IsraelPalestine peace process were aired in an unusual panel discussion that featured for the first time the Jordanian ambassador to the UK, Mazen Homoud.

Joining him and BICOM chief executive James Sorene were Koby Huberman, a hi-tech executive whose focus is bringing Israel peace in a regional context; Dr Dahlia Scheindlin, a public opinion expert and strategist; and Colonel Grisha Yakubovich, the former head of the civil department in Cogat, the Israeli Army unit that works with Palestinians in the West Bank.

Huberman said “conceptual problems” [in the conflict] now required a new way of thinking. “We thought the ‘product’ would be a two-state solution, but that needs to be one within regional security and co-operation — so the ‘product’ needs to be different,” he added.

It was wrong to continue assuming a peace process could be achieved by direct bilateral negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians, he said.

It would be achieved by negotiations within a regional framework, where Israel talks to the Palestinians and in parallel to the moderate Arab states.

Britain’s Middle East Minister, Tobias Ellwood, sent out a clear signal to Israel that despite Israel’s hopes for a mutual celebration of the Balfour Declaration centenary next November, Britain would be taking “a measured approach”, mindful of sensitivities in the region, writes Jenni Frazer.

Ellwood spoke in response to an upbeat address by Israel’s ambassador Mark Regev, who outlined the reasons the two countries had for an enthusiastic celebration.

But although he was keen to tell his audience Britain’s relationship with Israel would not change in the wake of the Brexit vote, he was more wary when it came to discussing Balfour.

The minister prefaced his remarks about Balfour by insisting Britain considered Israel “an important and critical ally in the Middle East”. Theresa May, in her first conversation with Benjamin Netanyahu after she took office in July, had emphasised Britain’s intention to use leaving Europe “as an opportunity ... to strengthen our relationships with other countries, including Israel”.

But, the minister said: “The UK’s ties with Israel will come under the spotlight next year”.

Britain continued to support the principle of a Jewish homeland, just as Balfour did nearly a century ago, but the lesson he took from Balfour “is that continents should not be carved up by foreign powers” as they were then.

For the peace process to go forward, the two parties had to negotiate directly, with the support of the international community.

He derided “romantic ideas” that once a peace process had been agreed, everything would proceed peacefully immediately. “Our understanding is we will have to keep fighting terrorism for the next 10 to 15 years”.

Dr Scheindlin picked up on Homoud’s support for a two-state solution in which east Jerusalem would be the Palestinian capital and spoke about a confederation between Israel and the Palestinians, where each would have its own government and own laws. Resources such

as water, and “threats” such as pollution, should be jointly managed.

Colonel Yakubovich insisted there were a number of initiatives regarding shared resources which were all ready to go — including a potential desalination plant to be built in Gaza.

“In 2020, 2.1 million people will have no water,” he added, “so we should not wait.”

But the quid pro quo, he said, was the need for Gaza “to provide security guarantees for Israel”.

JEWISH STUDENTS’ CONCERN OVER NUS Jewish students’ frustration at the National Union of Students (NUS) this week boiled over in dramatic style, in the run-up to a vote to stop working together.

Relations have been fraught since April, when the NUS elected Malia Bouattia, a fierce critic of Israel, known for ranting against “Zionist outposts” on campus.

Jewish students will vote on a motion to suspend working arrangements with NUS at the annual conference of the Union of Jewish Students on 11 December, but Union of Jewish Students president Josh Seitler this week turned on Bouattia, questioning her sincerity.

Writing in The Huffington Post, he said he met Bouattia six weeks ago. “I told her why Jewish students are angry and

frustrated, why many find her comments anti-Semitic. Her remorseful reaction appeared sincere; her attentiveness was noticeable. I was hopeful that we had taken a first positive step to rebuilding trust. How wrong I was.”

Instead, he said: “Malia once again placed the blame back on Jewish students, suggesting their anger was misplaced or invalid. She expressed regret that her words had been ‘interpreted’ as anti-Semitic. She apologised for having ‘caused offence’. Nowhere did she apologise for what she had said, or acknowledge that only Jewish students can define anti-Semitism.”

Charity praises Jewish response against slavery

A Jewish human rights charity has praised an “enormous response” from the Jewish community, after dozens of synagogues signed up to speak out against modern-day slavery during Shabbat services in two weeks’ time.

The awareness-raising campaign is being organised by charity René Cassin, and is timed to coincide with World Human Rights Day on 10 December.

The organisation offers an online

resource pack, including sermon notes and information on topics such as protecting overseas domestic workers.

Mia Hasenson-Gross, director of René Cassin, said: “The pain of slavery has particular resonance with Jewish people.

That is clear in the enormous response we’ve had on this issue from synagogues – including one from Barcelona.”

She added: “Slavery conjures up images of the Israelites exiled in Egypt,

or the infamous trans-Atlantic trade.

But the terrible truth is that today more people are enslaved than at any time in history – including some 13,000 here in the UK.” The organisation also launched an essay-writing competition, for submissions of up to 1,500 words by 6 February, asking writers to debate whether modern slavery is ‘the great human rights issue of our time’.

of the contributing factors to the relationship between Britain and Israel in high-tech had been the establishment of the UK Israel Tech Hub, first proposed by former UK ambassador Matthew Gould and now in its fifth year.

It had been “so successful that a number of other countries have copied the model elsewhere”, he said.

Israel, said Kandel, was at the forefront of three specific technologies: smart driving, digital health – which was the convergence of digital and genomic technologies to enhance the efficiency of healthcare and make medicine more personalised and precise – and agritech.

All these technologies were in demand in the UK. When the panel was asked about the effect of Brexit on the bilateral trade, Tan White said she felt it was “an opportunity to refresh the conversation” between the two countries, and looked forward to more joint ventures.

JEWISH LEADER WELCOMES ‘Evil Jews’ search removed ‘VITAL’ ANTI-EXTREMISM BILL A European Jewish leader has welcomed proposed anti-extremism laws from Theresa May’s government, despite free speech campaigners and the government’s own independent reviewer of terrorism legislation sounding the alarm.

Moshe Kantor, president of the European Jewish Congress, hailed the Counter-Extremism and Safeguarding Bill as a “robust response” to threats.

He said: “Terrorists and extremists have created networks in our countries, enclaves in our cities, outposts on social media. They are planning and plotting their next barbarous acts.

“Neither external radicalisation nor internal radicalisation is new, but the virulence of both has increased in recent years. They now feed off each other. Thankfully, political leaders have begun to realise the scale of the threat.”

He added: “Terrorism does not exist in a vacuum and we must look to blunt its influence in our societies. Those who aid, assist and inspire terrorists by word or action should not find shelter under the law.”

Introducing him was Hannah David, director of Conservative Policy Forum. She said the internet and social media were being used “to disseminate dangerous and extremist messages”, and Kantor was showing leadership in dealing with it.

However, David Anderson QC, who has spent six years reviewing surveillance and counterterrorism legislation, with access to secret documents, said the draft bill was “the single document that has alarmed me most”.

Google has manually amended its automated results after it was revealed the search engine predicted people asking about Jews would want to ask: “Are Jews evil?”

The internet giant uses algorithms to predict what users want to know, based on other users’ previous searches, and offers suggestions, but analysts have long suspected that extremists are manipulating the results.

This week, it was forced to override its own suggestions, after an article in The Observer on Sunday showed that users typing ‘are Jews’ were automatically offered the question “are Jews evil?” Other options included “are Jews a race?”, “are Jews Christians?” and “are Jews white?”

on “non-violent extremism”, but the government had not defined what this was. He said this was “very dangerous and quite wrong”, and represented a threat to free speech. Senior leaders from the police and security services are among those voicing concerns, as are organisations such as the National Secular Society.

Simon Calvert, of the Defend Free Speech campaign, said: “The government’s proposals – and Extremism Disruption Orders in particular – are dangerous. They need to be stopped before ordinary people are criminalised because their views don’t fit the government’s ideological straitjacket of British values.”

Kantor, however, said there were wider factors to consider, and times had changed. “We are still waiting for the concrete steps that European democracies must take in this vital fight for their own survival,” he said.

The paper’s investigation found that – after clicking on the suggested “are Jews evil” question – users were greeted with the top results, nine out of 10 of which were links to “right-wing anti-Semitic hate sites”.

A Google spokesperson said: “We took action within hours of being notified of the autocomplete results.”

Also on Monday, technology companies including Facebook, Microsoft, Twitter and YouTube decided to pool resources and work together, so that when one removes online hate speech, the others are alerted.

They said their new working arrangement helped them quickly identify the worst terrorist propaganda and prevent it spreading online.

Tributes to Fawlty Towers actor Sachs The Jewish world bid farewell to comic actor Andrew Sachs, best known for playing Spanish waiter Manuel in Fawlty Towers, who died last week aged 86.

The German-born fatherof-three battled vascular dementia for the last four years of his life, and was nursed by Melody, his wife of 57 years, who said this week she was “there for every moment of it”.

Sachs, who was born to a Jewish father and Christian mother, entered a care home in recent months, but lost the ability to speak and write during the last few weeks. He died in a care home, and was buried last Thursday.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, Melody said: “It wasn’t all doom and gloom. He still worked for two years (after his diagnosis in 2012). We were happy, we were always

Holocaust exhibit opens with survivors in 3D

A new exhibition which shows Holocaust survivors appearing as life-size 3D holograms to answer children’s questions has opened in Nottinghamshire.

Ten survivors were filmed answering more than 1,400 of the most common questions children ask. The resulting holograms now take centre-stage at the National Holocaust Centre and Museum near Newark and will continue to do so long after the survivors have themselves passed away.

Software created to support the exhibition, called the Forever Project, instantly matches a question to one already posed to the people they are questioning, resulting in

an immediate answer from a survivor.

Phil Lyons, chief executive at the centre, said: “The individual dimension makes children’s understanding of the Holocaust real and more meaningful. Survivors are key to what we do, and the question we faced was how we go beyond the time when first-hand testimonies are no longer available to us.”

The exhibition, which is hoping to tour, is open to school trips now, and to the public from February.

The centre used 4K cameras to film the survivors to create seven terabytes’ worth of pre-recorded answers. To keep it feeling realistic, technicians chose to keep the sur-

vivors’ coughs and pauses in, even showing them drinking water in between questions.

The survivors are now set to help educate hundreds of thousands of children across the country.

Jewish leaders: Casey focused on Muslims Jewish leaders have “welcomed” a Home Office report on social cohesion after it stopped short of advising against plans to remove the cap on religious selection at free schools.

The report, commissioned

by David Cameron and published on Monday by Dame Louise Casey (pictured), highlights the growing problem of religious, ethnic, and socioeconomic segregation in the UK, but focuses on Muslim communities.

Jewish community leaders had feared Casey might advise the government to drop its commitment to abolish the 50 percent cap on faith-based admissions to free schools.

She acknowledged that “where faith schools are oversubscribed and where children of faith come from particular groups, admission policies do seem to play a role in reinforcing ethnic concentrations”.

However, she did not recommend the government keep the 50 percent faith-based admissions limit, saying: “The

criteria have not been having the effect on diversity they were intended to, with the use of other admissions policies based on siblings or catchment areas, combined with parental choice, allowing more or less the same selection as 100 percent faith admissions would have, particularly in minority faith schools.”

Board of Deputies’ chief executive Gillian Merron “welcomed the general direction”, but added: “We must reach out to communities, and especially Muslim communities, across the country”.

Senior Reform Rabbi Laura Janner-Klausner said Casey’s description of social disintegration was “worrying”, and added: “The review also highlights corrosive challenges in white working-class enclaves.”

Care home is ‘like the camps’ JNF HEAD AZIZ MOVES TO US A Holocaust survivor who wants to leave a care home because she feels “like a prisoner again in the concentration camp” is set to be allowed home on a trial basis.

The woman, who is in her 90s and has dementia, is at the centre of litigation in the Court of Protection – where judges consider issues relating to people who lack the mental capacity to take decisions.

Council social services staff have asked district judge Anselm Eldergill to decide what is in the best interests of the pensioner, who was held in a Nazi concentration camp during the Second World War. One issue being considered relates to the

woman’s human right to liberty. Her confinement in a concentration camp was one reason she put such “high value on her liberty”. She said she wanted to be buried in Israel.

Earlier this year, the woman’s daughter said she thought her mother’s desire to leave the care home was an “unrealistic aim”, said barrister Lee Parkhill, who was acting for social services.

She thought her mother was being well cared for in the home.

But last week she said she was in favour of her mother being cared for at home.

Judge Eldergill was told it would take time for arrangements to be made for the care-at-home trial and is due to reconsider the case next year.

The former head of the Zionist Federation and current chief executive of JNF is to take up a senior position at the United Synagogue from January.

‘Castro called me a dictator’

AJC president Jack Rosen jokes with Fidel Castro

The American Jewish leader once jokingly described as a “dictator” by Fidel Castro this week spoke warmly of the late Cuban revolutionary and Communist firebrand, saying he was a “supporter of the Jewish community”.

Speaking to Jewish News, Jack Rosen, chairman of the American Jewish Congress (AJC), told of his many private meetings with Castro, who died last month, aged 90.

“When we first met, he was a hardened leader, a gun on his desk,” said Rosen. “He espoused a very tough antiAmerican line, but this softened over time. I saw him reach out.”

Over more than 20 private meetings across two decades, mainly lunches and dinners lasting up to six hours, the pair would talk about politics and world affairs, with Castro holding court, but also asking Rosen about Jews, Judaism and Israel.

“He was curious and interested. Once, he asked me if Jews believed in the afterlife. He wanted to learn,” said Rosen, recalling how he first explained to Castro why he needed to bring kosher for Passover wine and food to the embargoed island’s Jewish community, even offering the late leader a bottle or two to try.

The two were “able to speak frankly,” he said, an understanding that was tested when Castro’s Cuba strongly supported the Palestinians, most famously at the United Nations, sponsoring a motion equating Zionism with racism.

However Rosen said he “never heard [Castro] criticise Israel in private, and he didn’t rush to defend [the motion]”.

He added that Castro was not evidently hostile to Israelis, either, and was in dialogue with “an extremely highranking Israeli” who had business interests in Cuba.

“I would often see Israelis in Cuba when I visited, when there weren’t many other foreigners,” he said. “They were welcome, and knew they were welcome.”

Equally, Rosen said Castro gave Cuba’s Jews the freedom to practice their religion, and supported the renovation of Havana’s synagogue, when it had pigeons flying in and out.

“So he certainly wasn’t oppressive towards Cuba’s Jewish community. I wouldn’t go so far as to say he was a ‘friend’, but he was a supporter.”

The AJC chief looks back on his time with Castro fondly, acknowledging that every so-called “dictator” has a human side, but at the end of one memorable evening with the great raconteur, it was Rosen who was labelled a “dictator” – by the man the CIA could not kill.

“As we prepared to leave around 3am, Castro approached one of us and asked why we hadn’t asked him anything,” recalls Rosen’s compatriot Eric Gertler.

“A startled guest responded nervously: ‘I was told Jack Rosen would ask all the questions.’ Castro replied, ‘Ah, yes, I understand. That Mr Rosen, he is such a dictator!’”

One tiny village, one huge issue Amona is a ramshackle collection of 40 units where Jewish settlers live on privately-owned Palestinian land. It is tiny – and has just split the Jewish world in two.

When Israel’s Supreme Court finally ruled earlier this year that the Amona settlers should be moved on, even right-wing premier Benjamin Netanyahu thought it best to uphold Israeli law. But Israel’s pro-settler lobby, led by Naftali Bennett’s Jewish Home party, kicked up a fuss and threatened to bring down Bibi’s government.

By Monday, Bennett and Netanyahu had agreed to sacrifice Amona, but to retroactively legalise about 55 other outposts on land legally owned by Palestinians. Together these outposts are home to about 4,000 Jewish settlers. The Bill passed its first reading, and is, according to Bennett, the clearest move yet towards annexation.

Jews of many stripes point out the contradiction between the Israeli government saying it wants a two-state solution, and conversely, Israeli politicians overturning the ruling by Israeli judges that the land in question is Palestinian-owned.

They also look at Israel’s actions and question her insistence the main obstacle to peace is the Palestinians’ reluctance to compromise. It is an uneasy moment, the significance of which is not lost on Israel’s equally uneasy allies.

Just a few days earlier, US Secretary of State John Kerry said the Jewish state had a choice: agree a border with the Palestinians, which would lead to normalised relations with the Arab world, or continue building settlements in the West Bank, which would lead to Israel’s inability to be democratic.

In the end, said Kerry, it comes down to leadership, leaving us all to wonder whether this is what great Jewish leaders of the past would have wanted.

IS THIS WHAT ALL OUR SUFFERING WAS FOR? I love reading your newspaper from cover to cover.

I grew up in north London and benefited immensely from going to school with and living among many Jewish families.

I was very struck by the discussion of Donald Trump in your truly charming newspaper (Jewish News, 17 November). On the one hand, all but one commentator expressed dismay at his election. On the other, all the letters from readers appeared to rejoice in it. One writer even described him as “our moshiach” in a way that did not appear to be ironic.

I found this genuinely shocking and very sad. Is it truly being suggested, without sarcasm, that Donald

The West Bank in court In her letter, Roslyn Pine stated: “I have never said one may criticise Israel only if one lives there.”

Really? She must have forgotten her letter of 22 September in which she assailed Emily Hilton and Yachad for precisely that reason (re Yachad’s opposition to West Bank settlements).

Or perhaps her letter of 20 October in which she repeated this position. On the substantive issue of the West Bank settlements, did Ms Pine note the Jewish News report of 17 November, of the

Of the latest anti-Semitic incident, King’s College Cambridge says “sanctions have been imposed by the disciplinary committee on several individuals”.

There is one clear problem.

Sanctions include a confidentiality clause. The university involved therefore says it cannot provide more specific details, as it cannot comment on individual cases. Sanctions can mean anything.

If students are committing violent and dangerous acts, why should they be covered by a confidentiality clause?

One of those attacked in Cambridge claims someone tried to choke him. Why aren’t the police investigating ,rather than a college “disciplinary committee”, which wants to protect the university from bad publicity?

In your edition of 17 November, correspondent Martin Greenberg, referring to a Jewish News article lamenting Trump’s election, writes: “With the Brexit result and the election of Trump as US president, their (the liberal left’s) day is over.” Post-Brexit, UK courts have seen a significant increase in race-related offences. In the US, the KKK has celebrated Trump’s election. I do wonder at the parallel universe some of my fellow Jews appear to occupy, and the holes in which they bury their heads.

Technology and food are changing Israel’s narrative ALEX BRUMMER

A

t the end of the session on technology at the Jewish NewsBICOM policy conference, the reaction of the audience was a mixture of pride and frustration. Pride that Israel’s high-tech and science sector is viewed so positively in Britain and that shared trade, finance and cyber security have drawn the two nations closer together.

Frustration that even in a period when Israel’s security and settlement policy is not dominating UK headlines, much of what the public hears and reads is of disturbances on university campuses, boycotts and antiZionism. Bad news drives out the good news.

The reality is more nuanced. Post-Brexit, the £5 billion or so of two-way trade between Israel and the UK is obviously very valuable to UK commerce. But it is what we don’t always see that is often most fascinating.

When barely a day passes without cyber-

MUCH OF WHAT THE PUBLIC HEARS IS OF DISTURBANCES ON CAMPUS, BOYCOTTS AND ANTI-ZIONISM attacks on British institutions, almost all the victims look to Israel for solutions. BAE systems, the UK’s largest aerospace and defence group, has set up cyber-security operations in Israel.

Among the best places to track Israel’s changing role and image is in the pages of The Financial Times. The newspaper may sell fewer copies than The Big Issue in the UK, but its presence online (behind a paywall) and in the hotels and lobbies across America and in business capitals gives it enormous traction.

Last week, the German writer Frederick Studemann was in Beer Sheva in the Negev.

What astonished him was a cluster of buildings with the corporate logos of Deutsche Telekom, EMC, Lockheed, PayPal and others plastered over them. He found they had clustered in the desert to tap into Israel’s world of venture capitalists, computer engineers and ‘world-class cyber security’. What struck Studemann was less the hardware and more the human capital of ‘highly trained former conscripts’.

When president-elect Donald Trump talked about building a barrier or fence along the Mexican border, rather than a wall, media attention immediately turned to Israel. The FT suggested it was an opportunity for Magal Security Systems, the world’s largest provider of perimeter security. The company’s shares doubled on the Tel Aviv stock market in the immediate aftermath of Trump’s election win.

Israel has the technology of border sensors, advanced cameras and monitoring equipment.

Much of this has been tested on the controversial fence between Israel and the Palestinian

territories and, more recently, Egypt and Israel’s Sinai border. India has turned to Israel for help in building a ‘smart fence’ with Pakistan.

It’s not just security and technology transforming Israel’s image. We should not underestimate the soft power of the cuisine of Yotam Ottolenghi, who forms part of a changing Israeli narrative. In his image, there has been a flowering of Israeli-style restaurants in hipster London such as the Palomar in Soho.

The FT’s John Reed last month noted ‘Israel is homeland to global TV show successes’. He wrote that Netflix (home to House of Cards) had bought the rights to Fauda, an Israeli TV series about a military undercover operation seeking a Hamas militant. The much-acclaimed Homeland series is derived directly from Israel’s Prisoners of War and Shtisel, an Israeli series about the strictly-Orthodox community, has recently been sold to Amazon to be screened as Emmis.

Gradually, the contemporary narrative of Israel as land of occupation, boycott and war is being displaced by a story of technology triumph, science and culture. Long may it last.

The vital role of JLGB in the high-tech revolution WES STREETING LABOUR MP, ILFORD NORTH

he industrial revolution that is currently sweeping the world at an unprecedented pace and scale offers limitless opportunities if we’re prepared to reach out and grasp them. The story of one of my young constituents, 16-year-old Zachary Igielman, exemplifies the powerful role that Jewish education and youth movements can play in helping the young digital natives of today to become the entrepreneurs of tomorrow.

Zach has a passion for technology and this summer he met 17-year-old Jake Blumenow from Liverpool while they were both on tour in Israel with JLGB. While visiting the Google offices in Tel Aviv and then, a week later, visiting the Google Campus in London, they found that their shared interest in technology quickly developed into brainstorming ideas for new

inventions and business ideas.

Their latest business idea, MakeTronix, aims to help young people understand how the technological world around us works, with the aim of helping them to create and modify their own technology. Their first product is the MakeTronix Alarm, a nicely-packaged piece of kit that allows people to create their own alarm. Using Raspberry Pi – a creditcard-sized, single-board affordable computer – the kit comes complete with a circuit board, tutorials and lesson plans, making it ideal for young people to teach themselves how to program and create the device, or for teachers to use in schools.

These entrepreneurial teens have not only designed the technology and gained approval from the Raspberry Pi community, they’ve also had the prototype produced in China and are now crowd funding the £1,200 needed to manufacture the product for market. Zach’s school, Kantor King Solomon High School in Barkingside, clearly sees the potential of its student and the educational value of his

product, as it has expressed interest negotiating an investment deal!

I’d strongly encourage Jewish News readers to visit maketronix.co.uk and join me in supporting Jake and Zach in their crowdfunding initiative, but there are wider lessons to learn.

The first is the powerful role that JLGB has played in bringing Jake and Zach

together and exposing them to the vibrant tech industries of both the UK and Israel.

The second is the supportive role being played by schools like Kantor King Solomon in nurturing the talents and interests of their students.

The third is the central lesson that Zach and Jake are trying to teach everyone: that technology will shape this century and it is absolutely critical that people understand how to harness, adapt and create it. That’s why I believe that computer science should become the UK’s fourth core science.

The challenge is to make sure we are able to create for every young person the support network surrounding Jake and Zach’s experience through JLGB, through their exposure to the tech industry in the UK and Israel and through their supportive schooling.

In the meantime, the least we can all do is put our hands in our pockets to help Zach and Jake to realise the potential of their business idea. I have a feeling these boys are going places.

It’s up to us all to build the Britain we can be proud of LORD BOURNE

W

hat do you get when you mix politicians with a football legend and world champion boxer? Not the premise for a bad joke, but the launch of ‘Better Than That’, a campaign run by the Polish Cultural Institute to expose hate crime.

Last week I was in the Houses of Parliament to promote this initiative, which is being supported by Jermain Defoe, Carl Froch, Sir Eric Pickles, Tom Brake and Rosena Allin-Khan. For the avoidance of doubt: Jermain is the football legend, Carl is the championship boxer and the rest of us are politicians of different political stripes.

All of us are united by the idea of the campaign: to expose those who feel that they have license to express hatred against people who have chosen to make our great country their home.

Although it was a pleasure to meet the

well-known figures, I was inspired by the dedication of the activists and organisations that have signed up to back this campaign.

Groups such as the Board of Deputies of British Jews, Union of Jewish Students, Jewish Labour Movement, Jewish Leadership Council, the Equality and Human Rights Commission and Community Security Trust and many more.

Throughout December, we are encouraging people to join us on social media by using the hashtag #BetterThanThat and share photos of themselves supporting friends and family standing up to hate crime.

We have always prided ourselves on being a tolerant country, and that is why the rise in reported hate crime following the European Referendum shocked the nation.

But even while a few individuals chose to resort to hostility, violence and bigotry, they were far outnumbered by the thousands and thousands of positive

messages and support.

And it was hugely encouraging that so many ordinary people who witnessed verbal and physical abuse reported these incidents to the police. They refused to be bystanders and let these callous actions become the new normal.

Up and down the country, communities came together in solidarity against crimes that were not only meant to break bones, but also instill fear and to break spirits.

No one in the United Kingdom should ever be afraid to walk down the street because of the colour of their skin, the

language they speak or their faith.

We all share a common humanity, and we all live in a country that will continue to be defined by tolerance, mutual respect and the rule of law.

We in government have put together a new hate crime action plan to reduce hate crime, but in the end it is up to all of us to go out there and be kind to each other, to build the kind of Britain that we can be proud of, and where our neighbours can feel like they can be themselves.

So let’s all get behind this campaign, and if we see hate crime, expose and report it, because our country is #BetterThanThat.

Jews displaced from Arab lands must be recognised LYN JULIUS FOUNDER, HARIF

ne autumn day in 1956, Lilian Abda was swimming leisurely in the Suez Canal when Egyptian soldiers arrested her. “I was brought in my bathing suit to the police station,” she recalls. “The next day, they expelled me and my entire family from the country.”

Abda, who now lives in Haifa, was one of 25,000 Egyptian Jews caught up in the brutal aftermath of the Suez crisis 60 years ago.

Fearful that Gamal Abdel Nasser, Egypt’s military dictator, would nationalise the Suez Canal, Britain and France colluded with Israel to attack Egypt. The Israelis were responding to Nasser’s act of war – the closure of the Straits of Tiran – and to years of terrorist raids.

Nasser’s revenge against the Jews was not long in coming. Lilian Abda was accused of passing intelligence to Israel.

“They called me the Mata Hari of the canal,” she says. British and French passport-

holders were given days to leave.

Another 500 Jews were also expelled and their property seized, including stateless Jews or those who held Egyptian nationality.

Jenny Stewart, née Sitton, who resettled in England, recalls: “We were allowed to take out only £20 each. I sewed a £10 note in the hem of my dress. My mother’s jewellery was confiscated by the immigration officers when we arrived at the airport.”

The plight of Egypt’s Jews has been replicated all over the Arab world, as Jews were deprived of their civil rights and forced to leave. The majority of Jewish refugees found a haven in Israel.

Two years ago, the Israeli Knesset passed a law designating 30 November as an official date to remember the uprooting of almost one million Jewish refugees from Arab countries and Iran in the past 60 years.

The date chosen was 30 November – the day after the UN passed the 1947 UN Partition Plan for Palestine. Violence, followed by bloodcurdling threats from Arab leaders, led to the destruction of millennarian, preIslamic communities. After 1979, four-fifths of the Iranian-Jewish community fled.

Today, Muslim sects and non-Muslim minorities are being persecuted, but people forget that the Jews were one of the first.

As the saying goes: ‘First the Saturday people, then the Sunday people.’

Harif is holding several events this month to remember the plight of Jewish refugees from Arab lands. From Amsterdam to Sydney, Toronto to Bologna, Birmingham to New York, San Francisco to London, Jewish organisations worldwide, many in partnership with Israeli embassies, are organising lectures, film screening and discussions.

Refugees are much in the news. But until the mass population displacement caused by wars in Iraq and Syria, the world thought that ‘Middle Eastern refugee’ was synony-

mous with ‘Palestinian refugee’. Yet there were more Jews displaced from Arab countries than Palestinians (850,000, as against 711, 000 according to UN figures).

For peace, it is important that all bona fide refugees be treated equally, yet Jewish refugee rights have never adequately been addressed.

There are fewer than 13 Jews in Egypt today. Jewish refugees such as Lilian Abda have rebuilt their lives without fuss.

They don’t expect much in the way of compensation. But they do demand their place in memory and history.  Harif is the UK Association of Jews from Middle East and North Africa.

How religious are you on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being the Chief Rabbi, 1 being Stephen Fry? Josh Holt: I’m a 7 – I live a ‘kosher-but-veggiewill-do’ life.

Adam Schapira: Religion is a deeply personal journey and constantly evolves. I don’t categorise myself as a particular ‘type’ of Jew. I grew up in a modern Orthodox background and went to the leading modern Orthodox yeshiva. I have my frustrations with the community just like everyone else. But I firmly believe in a Judaism that is progressive, forward-thinking, inclusive and willing to learn from everyone.

Eran Cohen: I’m 4-5. A lax Maimonides, but still Maimonides.

If you criticised Israeli politicians for anything, what would it be and why?

Josh Holt: I find it incredibly patronising

when Israeli politicians attempt to speak on behalf of all Jews globally. We in the diaspora did not elect the Israeli government and so it seems unfair for them to speak as our universal representatives.

Adam Schapira: One of the things I love about Israel is the vibrancy of its democracy. If you want to see real criticism of Israel, speak to Israelis, visit the Knesset, ask a cab driver. Israeli politics can, at times, be incredibly polarised and divisive. I would like to see a politics that is more united and inclusive and can bring together marginalised sects of the country.

Eran Cohen: So many things.

Students of different faiths and none come together to learn and share in Jewish culture and religion. This is a wonderful positive initiative and should be reported more widely.

If you were Jewish News editor for the day, what good news stories involving students would you write about?

Josh Holt: I’d write about the incredible interfaith activities students engage in almost daily, such as Mitzvah Day, the interfaith weeks run across the country at campuses like Leeds and LSE, as well as interfaith Friday nights at Nottingham and Cambridge. Each unites people and sees widespread participation from all denominations and communities. We should champion the incredible positivity and intercommunal understanding that emerges from events such as these.

Adam Schapira: One of the great initiatives UJS runs annually is the Jewish Experience week across campuses around the country. Many JSocs use this as an opportunity for interfaith dialogue,

Josh Holt: Jewish students themselves would likely prioritise graduating and finding employment over the next five years. I would hope to

Adam Schapira: As has always been the case, Jewish students should be excited about university, knowing this will be one of the most formative experiences of their lives. UJS and JSocs exist to enrich Jewish students’ lives on campus – and this will continue to be my main priority. It’s the friends you make at Friday night dinners, the drunken nights at Booze for Jews, the lighting of Chanukah candles at your university halls that are the memories that last a lifetime. While anti-Semitism and unjustified anti-Israel rhetoric are serious concerns to be tackled, this should not define our Jewish experiences on campus.

Q My cholesterol is 5.6,

which my GP says is too high, but I don’t need statins. I don’t understand why everyone else seems to be on them.

The obligatory prescription of statins for anyone with a high cholesterol is rather oldfashioned now.

When statins first came on the market, they certainly did seem like a must-have for everyone with even a slightly high cholesterol.

The rationale for that was simple: cholesterol is one of the risk factors for heart attacks and strokes, and so removing it reduces an individual’s risks. This was backed up by trials that came out at the

in primary schools? It seems like such a Victorian illness: surely we are all too clean for this in 2016?

Sadly not, I’m afraid. Head lice or nits are rife in primary schools because children play and work in very close circumstances, so the infestation spreads very easily.

Nits are a very common childhood infection, but they are a nuisance and parents spend a huge amount of time and money on treatments.

Head lice actually have no preference for clean or dirty hair, and since they cannot be washed out with normal shampoo they are not at all related to hygiene.

Over the past 30 years, the widespread use of pesticides has caused the

time, so GPs dutifully stuck everyone on them. More and more trials have gone on since then looking at disease prevention and actually it appears not quite as straightforward as that.

If you have already had a heart attack or a stroke, then yes it is absolutely still worth being on a statin to prevent another one – we call this secondary prevention of disease.

But looking at people who have not had a heart attack or a stroke is now a bit different: the growing body of scientific evidence shows the benefits of taking a statin aren’t actually so significant and may not be worth the risks of side effects.

So it is better in your situation to concentrate on your diet to lower your total cholesterol and improve your levels of good cholesterol.

Eat oats, almonds, soya and olive oil and take plenty of exercise.

Products containing dimeticone, which suffocates the lice, are also useful because resistance cannot develop.

Parents need to get into the habit of checking for nits weekly before symptoms develop – then nits will be detected very early on in the infestation and there will be fewer to clear, so treatment is more likely to be successful.

Waiting for the symptoms of scratching could mean there are three to four times as many insects or eggs.

Proper wet-combing is a cheap, harmfree method if you use a huge amount of conditioner to make detangling less painful and let your child watch TV or read for distraction.

Q My mother is 84 and

has been told she has cataracts, which we expected, as her sight is getting poorer.

Otherwise she is independent and very healthy for her age.

Is an operation worth it?

An estimated 2.5 million people aged over 65 in England and Wales have some sight impairment from cataracts, so your mum has a very common issue, particularly given our growing elderly population.

The natural lens in the eye is clear to allow light to travel through to create clear vision: cataracts cause a clouding of the lens, which makes the vision gradually go misty or blurry in parts, then eventu-

ally throughout the whole field of vision.

Cataracts worsen over time and the only option is surgery. Nowadays, cataract surgery is pretty routine both on the NHS and privately, and even for an elderly person is performed as day case surgery.

Usually people go home the same day after having the procedure on one eye, then a second date is planned for the second eye. Given how healthy she is, the operation would certainly be considered worth it.

Firstly, it makes sense to have the operation now, while she is fit and well, rather than delaying it until a time when she may be less strong.

Secondly, a loss of vision, even if not significant, puts her at risk of falling: falls are a significant cause of illness and mortality in the elderly population. A fall could severely alter her quality of life and so is a risk worth avoiding.

My kind of town!

Barry Borman enjoys the urban landscape of Chicago, home to the world’s first skyscrapers and modern architectural gems

C

hicago, the windy city – in December?

You’ll freeze, everyone advised.

So, packing our snow jackets and boots, we set out to prove them wrong, intending to stroll the Wacker Walk, which tracks the Chicago River, and discover the city’s fascinating historic and contemporary architectural gems.

As a recce, we ascend the remarkable 1,800 feet-a-minute lift up to 360 Chicago, the observation deck at the 1,506 feet John Hancock Center. The main attraction here is Tilt, the scarifying floor to ceiling windows which angle to 30 degrees outside the building. Gazing south, we glimpse the river insinuating itself between canyons of concrete, steel and glass, an aerial history of the skyscraper – the word was invented in Chicago – and the focus of our next day’s walk.

towards Michigan Avenue Bridge, with the crystalline art deco pyramid of the Prudential, a mini dead ringer for New York’s Chrysler Building, prominent on our left. Next door sits the monolithic slab of the Aon Center, so good they built it twice – initially in Italian marble and subsequently, buckling owing to Chicago’s temperature fluctuations, re-encased in granite.

A glance to our right reveals the ‘Magnificent Mile’, Chicago’s glitzy shopping hub and the destination for numerous expeditions curated by my wife. Two 1920s icons face each other here. The Chicago Tribune Tower won a competition for “the world’s most beautiful office building” and, with its filigree crown and flying buttresses echoing France’s great Gothic cathedrals, few would disagree.

Opposite is the iridescent, terracotta-clad Wrigley Building, commissioned by the chewing gum magnate William Wrigley Jr and eulogised by Frank Sinatra, its six shades of white intentionally graded to increase in intensity the higher you go.

Crossing the river to Wacker Drive, there’s the Jewelers’ Building, a 17-storey tower plonked onto a 24-storey base, capped by a belvedere – three buildings in one, originally with elevatoraccessed garages on each of the first 22 floors for Chicago’s security conscious jewellers.

The iconic corncobs towers of the Marina “city within a city”, Merchandise Mart (the world’s largest commercial building), Mather Tower’s shard as the city’s narrowest skyscraper, and the river-green 333 West Wacker, reflecting and paying homage to the living waterfront’s curvature – each of these, and many others, have their own story to tell.

Furthermore, a whole new dimension is revealed in dusk’s coral glow or when the buildings sparkle and shimmer after dark.

Our lunch stop is at Macy’s, so the walk entails a slight detour south of Wacker Drive into historic State Street. Built in 1892 as an Italian Renaissance palazzo, its Walnut Room was the first restaurant opened in a department store.

A steaming bowl of squash soup is recommended for ramblers coming in from the cold.

After lunch, we wheel away from Downtown towards Navy Pier and the shores of Lake Michigan, visiting Milton Lee Olive Park. This contemplative green headland, jutting out above the breaking waves, offers a breathtakingly spectacular panorama of the golden Chicago skyline, a bracing contrast to Wacker’s city hubbub.

I admit, it was fingers-stuck-to-the-camera cold during the walk, but the sheer magnificence of the surroundings gets you through, warming the soul and permeating the body.

Jewish interest is provided by the Illinois Holocaust Museum. An hour out of town in Skokie, it’s well worth the detour. The Karkomi Permanent Exhibition traces the history from pre-war Jewish life, through the ghettos and concentration camps, to freedom and reintegration, documented by period photographs and

artifacts (including a rail carriage of the kind used in the deportations). There’s also an art gallery (reopening next autumn) featuring contemporary responses to the Holocaust and other genocides, together with “contemplative spaces” throughout the museum, where visitors can process and reflect on what they’ve seen.

After the war, Skokie had the largest per capita population of Shoa survivors outside Israel, leading to the museum’s creation.

Time it right and you could have supper at one of Skokie’s kosher restaurants. Better still, get to Milt’s BBQ for the Perplexed in the elegant suburb of Lakeview. More than just a restaurant, this is a self-styled “gathering place”, featuring speakers and establishing a Memorial Fund as part of its community programme.

With 100 percent of its profits donated to charity, this is kosher dining with conscience.

The waiter having assured us that “our smoked meats are cured onsite”, we can vouch that the chicken and brisket were to die for and this is without doubt the place to be if you’ve never sampled smoked chicken soup.

Chicago is also well endowed with many lively pizzerias and rustic Italian trattorias.

Our downtown Chicago base was the Sheraton Grand, with spacious, airy lounges and a beautiful swimming pool overlooking Lake Michigan. Request a room on a high floor with a river view and you can forget the TV – all you need do of an evening is to pour a glass of Sauvignon Blanc, put your feet up and savour the skyline’s hypnotic glitter.

What does the Torah say about: Cryonics

RABBI YONI BIRNBAUM History teaches us that the Jewish people have survived, despite continued attempts to destroy us.

Appearing in this week’s sedra, Laban is portrayed in the Haggadah as the archetypal anti-Semite. Immediately following the famous words: “In every generation they arise to destroy us…”, the Haggadah instructs us to “Go and study what Laban the Aramean attempted to do to our father Jacob…”

According to the Maharal of Prague (Rabbi Judah Loew), the reason why Laban deserved this moniker was because every subsequent enemy of the Jewish people at least attempted to self-justify their persecution of the Jews.

Esau’s descendants argued they were extracting retribution for the injustices suffered by their ancestor. Pharaoh maintained the Jews were his labour force and therefore he could do with them as he pleased.

By contrast, Laban is portrayed as the prime example of an anti-Semite, because there was no apparent reason for his persecution of his own son-in-law Jacob.

Yet Laban attempted to trick him ‘10 times’ (Genesis 31:7). In a chilling ancient precursor to modern forms of anti-Semitism, his actions were rationally inexplicable. They were based on a singular hatred of the Jews as the quintessential ‘other’.

Despite the odds stacked against him, Jacob not only survived, but emerged with a large family and substantial financial assets. It is that same resilience that continues to this day across the Jewish world – even in those very places where plans were once laid to eradicate it.

RABBI ARIEL ABEL Cryonics opens a new frontier in science. The preservation of materials at a very low temperature will one day lead to bodies being preserved for revival at a later date. What does the Torah have to say about this?

Essentially, there is nothing wrong with waking up at a later time than one’s designated life.

However, such revival can lead to disappointment. The Talmud cites the example of

a sage who woke up 70 years after he had first fallen into a slumber equivalent to death.

Unfortunately, he only wished to die again, and this time permanently, as he found that noone recognised him.

The sage was Honi the Circle-Drawer, who famously prayed for rain and in his merit drought was averted.

The reason he slept for so long was so that he should see how a tree planted by a man he had questioned 70 years earlier bore fruit for the benefit of the planter’s grandchildren.

When he went to the House of Study, the scholars exclaimed that the law was as clear to them as it had been in the days of Honi the Circle-Drawer.

When Honi exclaimed: “I am he”, no-one believed him.

Depressed, Honi prayed to die.

About this, the sage Rabbah commented: “Either companionship, or death”.

Cryonics offers revival at a later date - but at what cost?

Even if science achieves a method of reviving frozen corpses, people should think carefully whether it would be worth it for them to put themselves through the pain of living in a time and age unfamiliar to them.

Curiosity may not be a worthy enough excuse to satisfy, while suffering the uncertainty

This horrendous rape scene is not the only example of sexual abuse and violence against women in the Torah.

In the words of Rabbi John Rayner: “From this it follows that men and women are equally bearers of the Divine Image and hence that it is wrong for either sex to discriminate against the other.”

We are not of generations that will abhor the Edomite merely for being an Edomite; we are of the generation that shall say ‘no means no’, we abhor sexual violence and abuse.

We will see sexual discrimination stamped out and prosecuted appropriately in its event. And we will strive to convince societies whose sexual ethic remains biblical to join those enlightened.

The problem is religious values and rituals have been wrenched from us as they are used to sell everything you never knew you needed.

Every business is in search of new ways to lighten your bank balance by making you feel or look better.

Community and sacred time, the lifeblood of meaningful Jewish life, have become the latest targets.

We have stiff competition now for genuine and fulfilling life. Super-

markets and pubs are muscling in on our patch, selling lifestyles, not ways of living, and in our cash-strapped times, there’s good reason to be worried.

If we cannot be convincing in the market place of ideas and relationships, Judaism will not be viable.

Equally, we have to resist falling into the trap of seeking to bestow love and meaning on our nearest and dearest with ‘things’. This is not a plea for some kind of monastic life. I know the pleasure of giving and receiving presents. Some friends are preparing to theme their presents, reducing how much is spent and by whom, etc.

But here’s what I will do.

Chanukah is a festival of dedication to creating a home for the presence of the Holy One. Make a commitment to the progressive Jewish ideas of family and community.

Judaism is in the business of sanctifying time and building enduring relationships. That is the true meaning of our calendar and the greatest gift we can give to ourselves.

This can dramatically reduce the signal strength leading to reduced speeds or even no connection at all.

Often with new extensions, it isn’t too big a task to run network cables into the new rooms since the electrician will be running new power and lighting cables at the same time.

This will give you a very reliable connection to your new office if you can run cables from the existing router into the extension.

It is also much cheaper to run the cables during

the building process than to add them in at a later date.

Even if you intend just having a wireless connection, the new cable will enable you to have a wireless point in the extension, thereby avoiding the need to get the signal through the thick walls.

If the building work is at such a stage that running cables is not an option, then a second way would be to use HomePlugs that utilise the electricity cables to give a network connection.

This is not as fast, but will be better than using a Wi-Fi repeater.

We often supply these for garage conversions where no new cables are being run.

Celtic’s Israeli midfielder Nir Bitton has played down media reports over his bust-up with the national team coach Elisha Levy.

The 25-year-old was sent home from their World Cup squad ahead of last month’s qualifying match against Albania, after reportedly refusing to take part in a training session.

The Israeli FA released a statement saying Bitton wouldn’t be called up to the national squad again while Levy was in charge, though Levy later said he would consider him for selection again, saying the matter was closed and that Bitton would “learn from his mistakes”.

Bitton said: “That was a bit of a misunderstanding and everything is clear now. Obviously the media made it bigger than what it was – it is the past.

The Israeli Sailing Association has withdrawn from holding next year’s Youth World Championships.

World Sailing, the international governing body, said the Israelis made the decision as they were unable to secure adequate funding to host the event.

They exercised their right to withdraw as a final contract had not yet been concluded. The event was set to be held in Akko, next July.

Wycombe Wanderers star delighted after scoring FA Cup hat-trick

Wycombe Wanderers striker Scott Kashket said it was an amazing feeling to walk off the pitch with the match ball after he netted a hat-trick in their 5-0 FA Cup win over Chesterfield.

The 20-year-old’s treble makes him the League Two side’s top scorer for the season and he told Jewish News: “Before the game, I was thinking this would be the game I wanted to get a hat-trick – it’s something growing up I’ve dreamt about – and now I’ve been lucky enough to do it in the FA Cup. Walking away with the match ball was brilliant, it was an amazing feeling.”

Saturday’s hat-trick made it nine goals in nine games, and he was rewarded 48 hours later by a three-year contract. He said: “I’m very happy at Wycombe. I’ve played down the right-wing, but in the last few games the manager has wanted me to play on the last man’s shoulder and I’m enjoying it.”

Confident of making it through to the fourth round, having been drawn at home to face either Northampton or Stourbridge (the lowest ranking side left in the competition), he said: “You’d like a big name away,

but it’s not a bad draw and I reckon we’ll be confident that we can get to the next round. It’s a home game as well so we need to concentrate on that, win that and then hopefully get a bit of luck in the draw for the fourth round. It would be absolutely brilliant to emulate the Wycombe side which reached the semi-finals in 2001.”

He plays alongside fellow Jewish footballer Joe Jacobson, who he describes as “a very friendly guy.” He said: “You don’t get too many Jewish footballers about, but we have two in the same team.”

The former Wingate & Finchley player, who won two bronze medals for Team GB at the 2011 European Games and 2013 Maccabiah, is also hopeful he can win something with the Buckinghamshire side.

November saw them claim four consecutive wins as they moved from 21st to sixth place in the table. “I’m hoping we can get promoted at the end of the season”, he says. “We were a bit unlucky at the start of the season, decisions weren’t going our way and we had some injuries, but people are now coming back.

“A cup run generates a bit of excitement.

Anything can happen in a one-off game and it provides good money for the club, but the main aim is the push for promotion.”

Jonti Aremband’s strike proved to be the difference in their 1-0 win, with Markiewicz saying: “Best win of the season? It surely must be so. We’re fourth in Division Two and beat a team who are third in the Premier Division, who have the best defence and have only lost once all season.”

Believing they deserved the victory, he said: “We knew they’d be good on the ball and on such a large pitch, we set up to counter that. They didn’t have a single clear-cut chance from open play. They were reduced to efforts from corners and pot shots, we on the other hand could

have had four. The key to the game was discipline and shape and we didn’t lose focus for a second.

“Credit must also go to them, it’s not

easy to lose to a team a division below, never mind two, but they were very dignified in defeat.”

Oakwood manager Daniel Kristall, who wasn’t at the game, said: “Sunday was a bad day at the office for Oakwood, certainly the lowest point in recent times.

We dominated the ball without any penetration and were hit on the break.

“But let’s take nothing away from our well organised opposition from the lower division. They turned up with a game plan and deserve their win, I wish them all the best for the rest of the season.

“Our season hangs by a thread. We must win almost all of our entire league fixtures to have a chance of silverware.”
