VOICE OF THE JEWISH NEWS
How many more dead Jews before the West wakes up to Islamism? Another terror attack. Another round of vigils. Another series of horrified statements from politicians. We’ve been here before. And unless our leaders have the courage and determination to address the issue, we will be here again. And again. The ideology of Islamism has been allowed to flourish, almost entirely unchecked. Extremist imams rant about Jews in their sermons. Social media is a sewer, awash with indoctrination for weak and susceptible minds. A loose coalition of activist groups walk hand in hand with far-left politicians. And the result – time after time – is dead bodies on Western streets. Often, those dead bodies are Jewish. Little is done. The many Muslims who also despise such extremism are not given the help and resources necessary to fight the seeping poison in their midst and in their name. Words like “community cohesion” are wielded as bludgeons by deeply cynical actors. Vital attempts to bridge the divide between Jews and Muslims are routinely targeted by Islamist extremists, who harass those seeking unity. This week – finally – the Metropolitan Police commissioner and the Greater Manchester Police chief constable have indicated that the police will now act more decisively in the face of clear incitement from pro-Palestinian protestors, such as calls to “globalise the intifada”. While this step is welcome, there is understandable suspicion that it will not be properly enforced, as well as serious questions as to why it has taken so long for this action to be announced. And it is still unclear whether governments – here or abroad – are willing to face facts. Australia is now talking about further gun control. Gun control is important. But in this context, it’s like fighting fire by banning candles instead of targeting those calling for arson. It should not take the dead bodies of our loved ones, whether in Manchester or Sydney, for governments to finally take antisemitism seriously. It should not need any newspaper, including our own, to have to point this out. • Other named victims of Bondi attack not pictured are Alexander Kleytman, Tibor Weitzen and Marika Pogany
