The Jewish Federation & Foundation of Northeast Florida wanted to publish a “Jewish Blue Pages” to serve as your go-to resource for anything and everything Jewish in Northeast Florida. We will publish this guide every September, so make sure you keep this issue in close reach for the year. As you read this publication, I hope you are as proud as I am to call Northeast Florida home. There are so many opportunities to connect and engage with the Jewish community, and I encourage you to look over the magazine

Welcome to JewishLife’s Guide to Jewish Life in Northeast Florida. Whether you are a native, recently relocated, or thinking about relocating, this publication is for you. Northeast Florida is one of the fastest growing areas in the USA and we are one of the most expansive in footprint - yet we pride ourselves on having that small town feeling, of being welcoming, friendly, and engaging. Being a new transplant myself, I can attest to that statement. I can also share that there is so much more to our Jewish community than one might know.

Over the years, we’ve looked to community leaders and volunteers to direct our activities and plans. In addition to strategic fundraising through the Annual Campaign and securing the future of the community through the Foundation, we will continue to make progress on our three priorities:

OUR MISSION:

The efforts of our Federation & Foundation, along with your generous giving, allows us to provide the greatest impact in Israel and the world, while supporting our overseas partners: American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC), Jewish Agency for Israel (JAFI), Partnership2Gether, Taglit-Birthright Israel, and World ORT. Every two years, we are excited to welcome a new Israeli Community Shlichut (Ambassador) that works to engage the community in education and awareness. Partnership2Gether, the Israel Partnership Program, provides the opportunity for the Jewish community here in Northeast Florida to make personal connections with Israelis living in our partner city of Hadera-Eiron, Israel. We have helped build this bridge between Israel and Northeast Florida largely thanks to you.

It has been two years since I arrived from Israel, and it is time to say goodbye. I truly had the time of my life here. Working at the Jewish Federation & Foundation of Northeast Florida and the JCA, as well as partnering with all Jewish organizations in our community, gave me the opportunity to meet all kinds of wonderful people.

surprised, but as a secular Israeli, Judaism has not been a big part of my life. Living in the US and working in the Jewish community has changed that significantly. You made me proud to be Israeli and Jewish. You helped me understand that Judaism has a lot to offer - even to me. I came here to teach about Israel but instead I have gained so much knowledge about Israel and Judaism. From Shabbat dinners to Minyans, holidays to work meetings, Shabbat in the Lobby to Lunch and Learn – all of these experiences are priceless and extremely meaningful.

27 years old, born in Ethiopia, made Aliya when I was 4 years old. I live in Bet Shemesh, a small city next to Jerusalem and I worked at a bank before my Shlichut. I have a B.A. in political science and Latin American studies (I speak fluent Spanish). I heard about the program from a small ad on Facebook when I was on my last year in the university and I decided to give it a chance. For me, meeting new people and cultures is fascinating and it is one of the reasons why I decided to go Shlichut. I am really looking forward to meeting new people in the community, and to learn about the different Jewish institutions and the mentality. I expect that the Shlichut will be an experience of learning and growth. I want to feel connected to the community and be part of it, and I want to build meaningful

I am happy to say – I will see you in Israel. After leaving Jacksonville, I will travel in Ecudaor and Peru for two months and then will move back to Israel. I will start studying at Ben-Gurion University in Be’er Sheva and looking forward to my next chapter in life. I finish with a full heart, big smile and great memories. This community is incredible, and I can’t thank you enough.

BRIDGES is the Jewish Federation & Foundation of Northeast Florida’s leadership development initiative. The mission is to expand the vision of Jewish volunteer leaders, deepen their Jewish knowledge of community both locally and abroad, and inspire them to exercise transformative leadership. We fulfill this mission by educating up-and-coming Jewish lay leaders on the history, thought, texts, and contemporary leadership challenges of the Jewish People. The program is funded through a B’nai Tzedek grant awarded to BRIDGES from the Jewish Foundation. BRIDGES will continue nurturing future leaders in their personal and professional lives, who will give back to our community now and into the future. At the conclusion of the program, each candidate is encouraged to choose an area to move into more permanently, either within the Federation such as the Young Professionals & Families Division, Women’s Philanthropy, or as an ongoing volunteer within the community at a Federation beneficiary agency, school, or synagogue.

LAURIE AND LINDA DUBOW

took the train to Tel-Aviv where I participated in Onward Israel, a Masa program of the Jewish Agency for Israel. I lived and worked for two months as an intern at a tech startup. The extended time that I stayed there allowed me to understand Israeli culture on a far deeper level than I had before. I felt like I was more than a tourist, working every day at an Israeli company and meeting so many great people.

I began my journey in Israel as a part of Duke’s Hillel Birthright trip, a free 10 day trip to Israel that is open to any Jewish young adults all around the world. Five IDF soldiers joined us so we could really get to know Israelis our age. We felt the joy of entering the Old City contrasted with immense grief at Yad Vashem. We were amazed by the vast natural beauty of the silent Negev desert, and then enthralled with the bustle of Tel-Aviv. We rafted on the Jordan, floated in the Dead Sea, and surfed in the Mediterranean. It was an action packed 10 days, and when everyone else returned to the States, I stayed in Israel and headed to Northeast Florida’s partner city, Hadera.

Coming full circle, I stayed for two weeks with an incredibly sweet and kind family. I have known Niztah, a mother of two and a retired teacher, for eight years because she had been a chaperone on a P2G trip and had been hosted on two trips in my home. Our families have kept in touch over the years, and she even kept a framed picture of my family in her home. Because of my participation in P2G I had a deep connection with our partner city in Israel. I had a place to stay and many friends to visit, which made me feel at home and welcome. Then,I

MY SUMMER IN ISRAEL

My name is Josh Jacobs, a student at Duke University, and I have lived in the Jacksonville area my entire life. I have just returned after living for three months in Israel, where I participated in the Birthright and Onward programs. The incredible experience prompted me to reflect on how I got there and why being in Israel was so meaningful to me. My personal connection to Israel goes all the way back to 2012, when my family and I went on a Federation family mission trip. Visiting there for the first time sparked in us a love for the country, and my family became more involved with Israel, hosting Israelis in our home through the Partnership2Gether (P2G) program. When I was old enough, I took part in the exchange and visited Israel for the second time, making lifelong friends in the process. So when I finally had the chance to travel once again to Israel this summer, I jumped at it.

By Josh Jacobs

My trip has led me to be even more supportive of Israel and has made me want to take a more active role fighting anti-semtism and pernicious stereotypes that plague Israel and Jews around the world. All of these programs would not be possible without the Jewish Federation and Foundation of Northeast Florida, and I am extremely grateful for its support.

Josh Jacobs spent his summer participating in Birthright and Onward, and has participated in the Partnership2Gether program in the past. All three of these programs are funded through the Jewish Federation & Foundation of Northeast Florida’s Annual Campaign. The dollars that are going overseas have just as big of an impact on us here at home. For any questions, please reach out to Jill Metlin, Israel and Overseas Coordinator, at jillm@ jewishjacksonville.org.

We are all pieces of the same puzzle.” These words were spoken to a delegation of professional and lay leaders in Ethiopia this past June by one of our educators, Sigal Kanatopsky. Sigal describes herself as “a Jew and an Israeli born in Ethiopia.” Today, she is the director of the Jewish Agency for Israel (JAFI) in the Northeast Region of the United States. Haley Trager and I were among a group of 70 professional and lay leaders from Jewish Federations of North America (JFNA) and other Jewish philanthropies, who accompanied 179 Ethiopian immigrants to Israel.

As we stood on a mountain overlooking Sudan, we were told about the thousands who walked barefoot by night, and hid by day for three weeks until they reached refugee camps and waited to be taken to Israel. Many, like Sigal’s little brother, did not survive the trip and had to be buried along the way. We traveled to villages that they left either because they were fortu nate enough to make Aliyah or because they are waiting in the city center in the hopes of one day joining their families who are already in Israel. Some of these people have been waiting more than TWENTY years! We heard the stories of some of the families who we would be accompanying to Israel. They have no running water or electricity. The homes are one-room mud huts and their kitchen is a communal arrangement of primitive cookware used over a fire. The toilet is little more than a hole in the ground. Flies are everywhere. Despite desperate living conditions, they continuously followed Jewish traditions passed down through generations with an unshakeable love of Israel and determination to one day live in the land of our ancestors. We prayed together at a shacharit service that was attended by more than 1,000 Ethiopian Jews of all ages. Towards the conclusion of the service we all stood and sang Am Yisrael Chai. We will carry the memory of those moments with us forever.

Haley and I are grateful for the opportunity of helping to bring more Ethiopian Jews home to Israel. These trips are scheduled to continue until all of “the pieces of the puzzle” are assembled. No matter where we live on this planet, we are a global Jewish family, we are the Jewish People, caring for each other, raising each other up, and seeing that no one is left behind.

Supported by the Jewish Federation & Foundation of Northeast Florida, Iris Kraemer, Immediate Past President, & Haley Trager, President-Elect & Campaign Chair, participated in The Jewish Federations of North America’s mission that celebrated Ethiopian Olim arriving in Israel. For any questions, please reach out to Jill Metlin, Israel and Overseas Coordinator, at jillm@jewishjacksonville.org.

During our last day in Israel, we visited an absorption center in Beersheva and met new Olim who had already achieved great success in just the span of 18 months. To visit an absorption center is to truly understand the resources that are offered by the Israelis to face challenges and solve problems in the most practical and productive ways. Today, Ethiopian Olim enrich Israel and communities around the world. They are succeeding and are serving as role models and mentors for the next generation.

LEAVING NO ONE BEHIND

Why is my phone constantly dinging with notifications? A teen at Wolfson is sending me a photo of himself putting on Tefillin in his science class. Another teen is texting me to know if I have the donuts for a Chanukah themed JSU Club at Mandarin. A third teen is messaging in a group chat on WhatsApp if we can do a Shabbat Dinner theme for our next Stanton JSU Club. A parent is calling me to ask if her son is eligible for the next Shabbaton and so on and so on.

to tell you so much more about what we do and how you and your family members can get involved, but for now I’m putting my phone down to learn with some teens. Send me a message at (305) 764-7212 and I’ll be happy to connect!

By Joey Hamaoui

What is JSU and why are so many teens getting involved? Jewish Student Union (JSU) is an international program designed with a simple mission of getting Jewish teens in public schools to do something Jewish. It’s that simple. It was started by NCSY in LA in 2002 and spread all over the country and Canada to now be on hundreds of campuses with tens of thousands of teens participating each year. By creating a fun, social atmosphere, and bringing engaging Jewish advisors to public school campuses, JSU reaches all types ofWorkingteenagers.with

addition to our regular scheduled school club meetings, JSU sponsors activities outside of school including retreats, city wide holiday events, Shabbat dinners, social action trips, community service projects, holocaust education, Israel advocacy programs, and so much more. Here

Some clubs disbanded during the initial lockdowns of the COVID pandemic but most have reopened and this year we hope to open several more.

our teen leaders, JSU facilitates regular club meetings during the club period, before or after school, providing food for body and soul. Programs include speakers from a variety of Jewish organizations, a vast array of fun interactive activities and lively discussions on timely topics. Kosher pizza, doughnuts, holiday foods and other treats are always served. In

The unfortunate reality is that most Jewish teens check out of Jewish life as soon as the bar/bat mitzvah checks clear. They send their thank you cards and that’s the last we see of them. Synagogues and Jewish organizations have been racking their brains trying to figure out how to engage these teens and keep them engaged in Jewish life. Without engaged teens we are losing potential Jewish leaders for our community, but worst of all is we are losing our children.

The answer to this overwhelming challenge is JSU. We are on the frontlines of this battles with cutting-edge innovative Jewish programming. We are on campus meeting the teens where they are. We are taking holocaust education from the textbooks and turning it into 360-degree immersive exhibits that travel to their schools. We empower them to share their culture with their non-Jewish friends and develop Jewish pride. We inspire them to be more involved in their Judaism through immersive programing and a non-judgmental approach. We’re connecting them to thousands of teens like them around the county and so much more.I’dlove

WHY JSU IS BLOWING UP MY PHONE

in Jacksonville, we started JSU at Stanton College Preparatory School. From there it spread like wildfire as teens all over wanted to get involved. We opened clubs in Atlantic Coast High School, Mandarin High School, Creekside High School, Nease High School, The Bolles School and Wolfson High School.

Last year we studied Everyday Holiness by Dr. Alan Morinis. We had over 30 women in the program overall and over 70 women at our end of year event. In Everyday Holiness, Morinis describes different middot (character traits) that are central to Judaism. We

discussed the traits truth, generosity, simplicity, silence, and others. Each chapter allowed us to dive deeper in the rich, two thousand year old, Mussar tradition. At the conclusion of our Everyday Holiness study, we hosted Dr. Morinis for a special evening and heard firsthand about his work and teachings.

This year we will begin an engaging and exciting new book which we will announce at our 2022 Launch Event. This program is a great opportunity to explore and connect with Judaism more deeply. We are proud that Torah Partners includes women of all denominations, ages, and beliefs. There is no background Jewish knowledge needed to join this program; the only expectation is to come as you are.

he Kollel’s Torah Partner book club program is a space for Jacksonville Jewish women to connect with each other and Jewish texts in an open and engaging environment. Each participant is partnered with another book club member to review discussion questions on the monthly chapters. Then, at the conclusion of the month we have a book club meeting where we have different women present on various themes that resonated most deeply. This program is informal and built to fit the needs of a busy Jewish woman. We recognize that Jewish women are powerhouses in their homes and communities and our program reflects that.

We are an inclusive and diverse school that believes in the importance of growth through play. Each child benefits from an integrated curriculum enhanced by Art, Gardening, Music, and Learning Lab. Here, children begin to form their Jewish identity to become part of the community. We strive to make each child feel safe, cared for, and valued, so they truly flourish. Our school provides parents a window into their children’s learning through daily digital reports including photographs and videos. A direct line of communication is always available through our dedicated office staff.

At Ganeinu Early Childhood Development Center, our children are viewed as collaborators. We build on the strengths and interests of each child with new activities and environments in which they can thrive. Now known as the Berman Family JCA Concert Series, thanks to the generosity of the Berman Family – specifically Edith and Milton’s granddaughter Rochelle Stoddard and her husband David who endowed the series, the Young Concert Artist Series will remain at the JCA in perpetuity. Stay tuned for the 2023 concert dates; performances happen at the JCA in January, February and March.
