at the Above & Beyond #5 will honor local men in our community.

5th Annual Above & Beyond We will be celebrating our 5th Annual Jewish Federation’s Men’s Philanthropy Annual Community Campaign Fund event on Thursday, February 7th, 2019, 6:00 pm at the Columbia Memorial Space Center in the City of Downey, CA. The evening brings together men from all over the community to celebrate the power we have to care for the vulnerable, to be committed to the survival of the Jewish people, to invest in the future of our children, and to rescue those in need no matter where they live or how they worship.

Joining this homage, and our community honorees, will be guest speakers. One, a retired scientist, who worked at Boeing in space medicine, will talk briefly about his involvement in health and space travel. The other will speak to the future. As we are moving forward with the merging of the Jewish Federation and the Jewish Community Foundation, and creating a new entity, to support Jewish people, Jewish thought, and Jewish culture, we will hear about the different ways this will happen. Marcos Weinstein, Above & Beyond, Co-Chair states “Perfect topic at the perfect time. Mission forward, to the future is what we are all about.”

Going Above & Beyond This evening is also an opportunity to honor local men who go above and beyond in support, and leadership, throughout our community and are nominated by their agencies and synagogues. (Please see the sidebar to the right for the 2019 Above & Beyond honorees confirmed as of printing). “It is always so great to honor these men from our community and share their good deeds with all. I for one, meet many new people and learn things about them I would otherwise not know. Makes me very proud to be part of this community,” stated Thomas Nantais, Above & Beyond, Co-Chair.

The Countdown Has Begun This year, you will be receiving your Above & Beyond invitation via email, right around the time you are reading this. There will be a direct link to an on-line registration form. We will be sending plenty of email reminders. Using E-Invitations continues to save us thousands of dollars for printing, postage and staff time. Tickets are $65 each, $30 for students, and there are many sponsorship opportunities. In addition, guests are asked to make a requested minimum gift to the 2019 Annual Community Campaign Fund of $180. If you have already made your pledge, you do not need to make an additional one to attend. Mission Past, Mission Forward We will also take a moment to honor one of the Columbia Spaceshuttle Astronauts lost in the tragic accident, Israeli hero, Colonel Ilan Ramon. And the recent loss of his widow, Rona Ramon, who has become an Israeli hero in her own right.

Tu b’Shvat: Recognizing Our Reliance Upon Nature By Rabbi Dr. Mark Goldfarb

Later this month, we will celebrate the holiday of ‫ ט״ו בשבט‬Tu b’Shvat - the New Year Rabbi Dr. Mark Goldfarb for the trees. The Hebrew words, ‫ט״ו בשבט‬, refer not so much to the name of the holiday, rather the date of the holiday. ‫“ ט״ו‬tu” is a pronunciation of the Hebrew letters for the number 15 and ‫“ שבט‬Shvat” is the name of the Hebrew month. ‫ט״ו בשבט‬, is thus the 15th day of Shvat. The Mishnah teaches us that there is a new year for trees — ‫ט״ו בשבט‬. A new year for trees? Were the Rabbis out of their mind? Why do trees need a new year? In the Biblical days, and days of The Temple, it was important to know the age of fruit. The Torah teaches that the first three years of fruit growth were supposed to ripen and fall to the ground. A great way of providing nutrients to the young fruit

tree. During the fourth year, the fruit was to be brought to the Kohein at The Temple and sacrificed. It was only from the fifth year on that the farmer was able to use or sell the fruit produced by the tree. Regardless of when the tree was planted or first bore fruit, on ‫ט״ו בשבט‬, the 15th of Shvat, all fruit trees age one year. Why is it important for us to observe ‫ט״ו בשבט‬ today? We no longer bring the offerings of our fruit trees for a sacrifice to any place, even though here in southern California, a number of us have fruit trees in our yards! After the destruction of the Temple by the Romans in the year 70 C.E. and the exile of most Jews from the Land of Israel, ‫ ט״ו בשבט‬took on new meaning. It became a wide spread custom to eat fruits that grew in the Land of Israel. With the establishment of the modern State of Israel, ‫ט״ו בשבט‬ has taken on additional meaning. It is a popular custom to donate money to

the Jewish National Fund to pay for planting trees in Israel. In the 16th Century, Sephardic Mystics created the ‫ ט״ו בשבט‬Seder, modeled on the Passover Seder, in which participants read selections from the Hebrew Bible and Rabbinic texts, and ate fruits and nuts traditionally associated with the land of Israel. In the Book of Deuteronomy, five fruits and two grains are associated with the land of Israel: wheat, barley, vines, figs and pomegranates, olive trees, and dates. Participants attending a ‫ ט״ו בשבט‬Seder would drink four cups of wine or juice. The first cup is white wine or juice, to symbolize winter. For the second cup, a little red is added, a hint of spring. The third cup is red with white added, symbolic of late spring. The fourth cup is red, representing summer. Many congregations and communities observe a ‫ ט״ו בשבט‬Seder and I encourage you to find a

congregation with which to experience the fun and joy of this seder! Much in Judaism acknowledges humanity’s interdependence with and total reliance upon nature. The Rabbis of our Talmud teach us when the Eternal One created the first human, the Eternal One took the human around to all the trees of the Garden of Eden, and said to the human, “Behold My works, how beautiful and commendable they are! All that I have created, for your sake I created it. Pay heed that you do not corrupt and destroy My universe; for if you corrupt it, there is no one to repair it after you.” [Midrash] May we have the strength and courage to do what we need to do so that we can leave our grandchildren a world in which their grandchildren can thrive. At the Alpert JCC, we are fortunate to celebrate two New Years – the Jewish New Year in the fall, Rosh Hashanah, and the secular New Year, January 1. Traditionally, many people take the time around Rosh Hashanah to make new resolutions and set goals for the coming year. I think it’s wonderful to have a second opportunity to take a step back to reevaluate the goals we set at Rosh Hashanah. We can choose to renew those goals, whether or not we were successful, or choose new goals if that’s where our heart leads us. Irina’s love of folklore and decorative arts is reflected in her colorful illustrations. When she paints, Irina says, she lives in a fantasy world of fairy tales and childhood memories. Her favorite subjects: folklore, dancers, and portraits of people or pets. Custom orders are welcome. Irina enjoys both digital imaging and conventional painting with watercolor, egg tempera and oils. Her experience includes art directing of a textile studio, teaching art at Otis College, illustrating greeting cards and children’s books, creating art dolls and hand-painted jewelry. Irina exhibited at The Optical Allusion Gallery, Pacific Design Center, Chemers Gallery, Gatov Gallery, Esencia Flamenca Studio, among others. Born in former USSR, Irina now lives and works in Long Beach, CA, with her husband and two children.

Generous Givers Make Holidays Memorable

The Alpert JCC’s Early Childhood Education teachers show off some of the holiday presents that were purchased for two JFCS client families by ECE parents and children for this season’s JFCS Adopt a Family program.

Thanks to the generosity of so many in the Long Beach Jewish community, the holidays were happier for many of JFCS’ client families. From Thanksgiving through Chanukah and Christmas, 20 families enjoyed festive Thanksgiving holiday meals, and 24 families totaling 35 adults and 48 children received holiday gifts. Skillfully coordinated by former JFCS development

director Janet Pottebaum and supported by the JFCS social work team, JFCS matched those in need with those who were ready to provide it. The Alpert JCC Early Childhood Education (ECE) program performed a true mitzvah by adopting two JFCS client families in need so that they would have a happy and memorable holiday. JFCS supplied

ECE with details of the family members, such as their ages, genders, favorite color, and holiday needs and wishes. ECE families then selected individuals from the two families and shopped for items on that family member’s list. “Our families really enjoyed shopping with their children and having conversations about buying presents for other children. It seemed to

Café Europa Set for January 17, 2019

Café Europa, a luncheon organized by JFCS for Holocaust survivors and their family members living in the greater Long Beach area, is set for January 17. This annual event provides an opportunity for survivors to enjoy each other’s company and meet new friends while

sharing a delicious meal together. Many of the survivors have attended past events and have formed strong friendships with other attendees, particularly in instances where a common language, like Russian, Polish, or Yiddish, is shared. JFCS Board members,

staff, social work interns, and Marriage and Family Therapist Trainees and Associates join the survivors at lunch to meet them and learn more about their journeys to the United States and eventually to California. The event is planned by a committee under JFCS

It made their holiday season one that they will long remember,” said Kathryn Miles, JFCS Executive Director. Temple Israel Sisterhood offered gifts for a family of five, while the Temple Israel 10th Grade class

adopted four individuals. National Council for Jewish Women’s Long Beach branch provided gifts for two families. The Women’s Philanthropy division of the Jewish Federation also participated this year by supporting a family with seven children. Seventeen donors, including eight current and former JFCS board members also made significant contributions to the effort by adopting one or more families or sharing members of a family. The JFCS staff and board of directors are so grateful to everyone in the Jewish community and beyond for offering a helping hand to those who so desperately need assistance. The holiday season brings out the best in those of us who are able to give to others.

JFCS Announces New Board Members and Staff Changes

With the new calendar year comes a roster of new board members at JFCS. “We are thrilled to be adding 5 new board members, bringing the size of our board up to 21. “These five men and women will bring new ideas and skill sets to an already talented and highly engaged group,” said Kathryn Miles, Executive Director. They are: Raymond Cervantez, VP and Los Altos Branch Manager

of Farmers & Merchants Bank; Dr. Marvin Zamost, a longtime supporter of JFCS and an established family practice physician with Healthcare Partners; Adolfo Guzman Lopez, broadcast journalist with KPCC Radio, a National Public Radio affiliate, who has covered transportation, the arts, and higher education, often with a focus on mental health; Karin Polacheck, a former school district department chief;

and Joanne Ratner, who with her husband Wayne Slavitt owns Mobul, a retail store focused on home health and accessibility aids. The new members will be installed at the JFCS Annual Meeting & Installation of Officers on the evening of Thursday, January 24th. Executive Director Kathryn Miles also announced that Lisa Honsberger, MSW, has assumed the role of Manager of Community-

Based Services, overseeing the day-to-day operations of JFCS’ contracts with Downey and Los Alamitos Unified School Districts to place clinicians in a total of 22 schools. She will also oversee all domestic violence and art therapy programming. Honsberger moves to this position from her previous role as Manager of Social Work. The agency will also be saying goodbye to Jill Senecal, who has been

JFCS’ grant writer for the past 21 years. Jill is retiring during the first quarter of 2019. “Jill is truly a member of the JFCS family who will be missed by all of us. Her expertise in submitting successful grant applications is one of the reasons that our agency has been able to thrive and better fulfill our mission,” said Miles. He sits on the California Advisory Committee to the United States Commission on Civil Rights, and was named 2008 Volunteer of the Year by the San Francisco Jewish Community Federation. Our student athletes at the Hebrew Academy Middle School bring their all to each and every

basketball practice and game. Our athletes learn risk-taking, perseverance, and a commitment to being one’s best is never about being perfect, rather striving to being their best selves. Our athletes compete with character and learn to both lead and support teammates, to respect their opponents and to persevere through challenges on and off the court. The Hebrew Academy Middle School athletic program introduces students to sports and competition in an environment that engages in friendly competition, teaches kids to contribute positively to team dynamics, and push themselves

beyond their comfort zone. Our coaches are passionate about leading our student athletes to success and teaching them how to overcome challenges, both on and off the court. This year The Hebrew Academy fielded two basketball teams and have a winning record of five wins with only one loss. Team practices take place on our campus during and after school. Games are scheduled weekly with six to eight games per season. Coach Jonathan Zoltan, our school’s Director of Physical Education, said: “This is the winningest season for The Hebrew Academy, we played against the JCC

and other private schools in the area.” “The most important thing”, he said, “is our team’s pride and sportsmanship in playing these games.” Coach Zoltan has a reputation of bringing teams to championship levels and dedicates every moment of practice and game time to building the team dynamics and improving the teams’ skills. There are more after school activity options than ever before for middle school students at The Hebrew Academy, including clubs, tutoring, technology and sports. Participation in any of these activities require the middle school students to work as a team

and be persistent in order to succeed. It also gives them access to positive role models, such as coaches and older players who can set positive examples. The Hebrew Academy believes in the importance of having a great athletic program that continues to improve, as it believes in striving for constant improvement in its excellent academic program. We are proud of our basketball team starting this year with great results on the court and look forward to many more wins over the rest of the season. Go Academy Rams!

Last week, we opened our brand new X-STREAM Lab on The Hebrew Academy campus! This laboratory experience will combine Science, Robotics, Engineering, Art, Technology, and Mathematics in a streamlined experience for our students. This unique experience will provide our students many opportunities to focus on real-world problem-solving skills with creativity and innovation, in a safe environment to ultimately succeed. Students engage and apply their

education in a deeper and more meaningful way. Success through hands-on learning and collaboration between subjects is the foundation to all STEAM programs. Our Lab will be used by all students, even as young as elementary age. At The Hebrew Academy, we believe that every opportunity to build on life skills are important. Starting early will only enhance all future learning they do, not only in a classroom environment, but throughout the rest of their lives.

Our students are using their brain power and collaboration skills to finalize their semester’s new STEAM curriculum projects, which include building earthquake resistant units, as well as conducting clay models of lunar topography.

Ben Raymond Abraham will be called to the Torah at Beth David in Westminster, CA as a Bar Mitzvah on January 26th, 2019. Ben is a 7th grader attending Bell Intermediate School in Garden Grove, CA. He is active in the Animal Amigos club. He plays the trumpet and was active in the temple Jr. Choir. He likes to play Just Dance

and spend time with his friends. For his mitzvah project, Ben is helping Animal Amigos protect animals and conserve the environment through beach clean-ups and helping at the local animal shelter. Ben is the son of Rachel Abraham and the grandson of Susan Abraham and the late Dr. Raymond Abraham.

Leslie Schwartz will be reviewing her memoir The Lost Chapters: Finding Recovery and Renewal One Book At A Time. This book presents a powerful story of her experiences in Los Angeles County Jail after being sentenced for a DUI and battery. This review is made possible, in part, by a grant from the Barbara Alpert National Council of Jewish Women Endowment of the Jewish Community Foundation of Greater Long Beach and West Orange County. On Saturday, January 26, 2019 at 10:00 am, the YESS (Youth Empowerment Safety Symposium) will be held to provide human trafficking awareness through the arts, workshops and dialogue. Volunteers are needed. Email NCJW for more info. On Thursday, January 31st at the Alpert JCC on the Weinberg Jewish Federation Campus at 6:30 pm, come experience Mitzvah and Merlot with members of the Temple Israel Sisterhood and Hillel as we make fleece blankets for “Wrap the Kids.” No sewing skills are needed but bring scissors.
