FEATURE STORY

Change and Evolution Zachary Benjamin CEO Jewish Long Beach

Change and evolution are themes woven through the narrative of the Jewish people since the time of Abraham. From our centuries as slaves in Egypt to our exodus and decades as a nomadic tribe, our eventual creation of a society in the Promised Land, and our nearly two millennia exiled in Diaspora prior to the creation of the contemporary State of Israel, our people have continuously assumed varying identities and characteristics in order to ensure our long-term survival. Similarly, Jewish federations and the federation system have also undergone multiple eras of transformation. Federations began largely as funds to assist Jewish refugees fleeing postWorld War II Europe, primarily to what would soon become Israel, but also to communities throughout North and South America. As Israel established itself as a vibrant, sovereign nationstate, federations began to focus on fulfilling the needs of Jews in their local catchment areas. While federations, including Jewish Long Beach, remain committed first and foremost to

advancing the local Jewish welfare, we have, at times, pivoted to address critical and urgent issues impacting the Jewish people worldwide. For instance, throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Jewish federations were the leading funders of the effort to bring endangered Soviet Jewry to safety in Israel, the United States, Canada, and beyond. Our movement was also instrumental in delivering Ethiopian and Yemeni Jews from existential threat to new lives in adopted homelands. Our movement now finds itself in another era of transition. As debt burdens, cost of living, and inflation rise, less wealth will transfer between generations, and communities’ capacity for annual giving will diminish. Thus, we are challenged to find structures for our institutions that will ensure their sustainability into a future giving landscape that will look markedly different than that of the past. As a result, Jewish Long Beach is undergoing its own evolution, designed to advance Jewish life and organizations throughout Long Beach and West Orange County. We will begin communicating more frequently with the community, using varying types of media to set and disseminate our narrative. We will continue to engage in robust advocacy, leveraging our partnerships with organizations both in the Long Beach area and nationally to address issues of

importance to every Jewish individual. We will work with agencies throughout our catchment area to set community priorities, then make grants to advance programs and projects that address those priority areas. We will also be renewing our focus on planned giving, building endowments, and securing our community’s Jewish future through careful stewardship of our donors’ philanthropic funds. While we find ourselves at a transformative juncture, it is important to emphasize that our core values and objectives remain unchanged. We are still a federation—part of the Jewish Federations of North America—with an unwavering commitment to the long-term local Jewish welfare. Our annual campaign will not only continue, but will thrive, thanks to a vibrant communication program, strong partnerships, and visible progress toward our mission. We remain a dedicated convener of Jewish community, a funder of programs and projects that enhance and advance Jewish life, and an agency in service to the welfare of the Jewish people in Long Beach, Israel, and beyond, throughout the life cycle, from generation to generation. I hope you will join us in this new phase, rooted in the principles that have sustained us throughout our history.

This new year, you can power reFUGE Just look at what you already powered. Before nine-year-old Yuri and his family left Ukraine, they’d known only suffering. Then the family arrived in Israel, and knew they’d have a chance for real happiness in their true home. Through a Jewish Long Beachfunded agency, you made it possible — you powered their aliyah. You’ve now powered a return to our Jewish homeland for nearly 30,000 people. Delivering them safely from hatred and hardship. Helping them resettle on Israeli shores.

This New Year, with so much still to do, let’s commit to powering even more.

How To Make This Year An Adventure By Rabbi Yisroel Zavdi

Imagine you were given an opportunity to travel the entire world, every continent, every country at no cost. But there would be one condition; you would have to do it blindfolded. You can trek from Hawaii to the Swiss Alps, from the Amazon to Jerusalem but it will all have to be done without you seeing any of it. It’s a frustrating idea. Here you are going from place to place but to you, it all seems the same. The truth is, this dilemma does not just exist in the realm of space, it also exists in the realm of time. The Kabbalah teaches us that just as every place

Area Synagogue Upcoming Events

has its own unique energy and purpose, which is why traveling is always filled with newness and adventure; every point in time has its own exclusive character and rhythm. This week, this day, this very moment will never happen again; there will be many more moments to come, but none will be like this. One can go through life, day after day blindfolded, like listening to the same song on repeat. Or one can take off their blindfold, look at each day and recognize that the challenges and triumphs that are unfolding before them is unique, it has its own flavor and will never happen this exact way again. This is what’s so significant about Rosh Hashanah and the celebration of the New Year. During this Holiday, the energy that will define the entire year ahead, the context in which everything

will be achieved, enters into our world for the very first time. Furthermore, the Kabbalah teaches, not only is this a new energy, each year it is an even greater energy than the year past. The potential and destiny that is waiting to be unlocked during this coming year is something the world has never seen. All this happens with the blast of the Shofar. The sound of the Shofar is the sound of us piercing heaven and drawing down a year that is unlike any that’s ever been before. Its unique tone beacons us to take off our blindfold and witness the transition into a brand new year.

choice is ours, we can slide right into the New Year blindfolded, completely unaware of the fact that we just entered into an entirely new dimension, or we can go hear the Shofar and blow the blindfold off. We can open our hearts and pray for a year of health, redemption, prosperity and happy adventures! Rabbi Yisroel Zavdi teaches Kabbalah and is the outreach & youth director at Chabad of West Orange County in Huntington Beach. He can be reached at RabbiZ@ChabadHB.com

Help us reach our 10k goal!

This year, we are thrilled to be a part of a Long Beach-wide fundraising day, Long Beach Gives on 9.19.19, where we are raising $10,000 to enhance the quality of life for seniors in our community, by providing opportunities to have social, educational, recreational, and spiritual experiences. Every year, the Alpert JCC provides close to 4,000 hot lunches to seniors in our community. We provide not only a meal, but rather a space where they engage in conversations, enjoy entertainment and even win free raffles! Seniors Wednesdays are solely made possible by donations. Your support on Long Beach Gives Day (9.19.19), allows the Alpert JCC to continue to provide these lunches, entertainment and raffle prizes to seniors in the Long Beach Community. More importantly, it will allow for us to continue to prevent senior isolation in our community. All seniors are welcome to participate in any of our programs and events regardless of their race or faith.

The Beauty of Helping Others By Wendy Manasse, RUNWAY Visionary

Seven years ago my husband David and I looked at each other and said, "We want to do more for JFCS". As a veteran of the fashion industry, creating a fashion show fundraiser sounded much more exciting than writing a bigger check. The vision was to produce a highend event that combined the glamour and fantasy of fashion via a runway show while raising awareness of JFCS and the beauty of helping others. On September 19, David and I will underwrite our 6th event --- RUNWAY: CO-ED --- so 100% of everyone's participation benefits JFCS. We never imagined what

the event would bring to the community and to JFCS: • RUNWAY has been able to cultivated an incredible partnership with Macy's Los Cerritos. Besides a generous grant and supplying the clothes for the show since its inception, for the second year they hosted an event in the penthouse of the store for our clients who have been victims of domestic violence and their children that's all about pampering and empowerment. Priceless community building! • Each year, we continue to attract new faces to

the event ... first timers to the building and first timers being introduced to JFCS and our services and programs. Casting a wider net means that JFCS can help more people who need counseling and support to live healthier and more fulfilling lives. Priceless outreach! • I've reached out to many of my industry friends over the years for contacts and to headline RUNWAY events. Not only have they said "yes", but they have become JFCS supporters and advocates, helping us to form our RUNWAY

Presents series of events that broadens exposure for JFCS while raising additional funds for the agency. Priceless longterm friendships! • Outreach to CSULB and LBCC fashion students recruits dressers and assistants for our fashion show every year. Priceless Millennial engagement and volunteerism! Our goals for RUNWAY continue to include introducing new faces to JFCS (who we are, our services, and our programs) along with increased fundraising for the agency. Every day the need for

mental health counseling becomes more important. Everyone needs to know that JFCS is the only agency in Long Beach to offer counseling on a sliding fee scale for anyone from 4 to 104. The most touching part of RUNWAY is our testimonials. Clients let us into their world for 5 minutes and share with the audience, first-hand, how their life has been impacted by JFCS. These people and their stories reflect the beauty of helping others and how you as a JFCS supporter have a positive impact on their lives. See you on the 19th!
