A warm welcome and thank you for joining us today for the 36th Jewish Care annual business lunch and a huge thank you to our main sponsor the Topland Group, along with our associate sponsor Allsop LLP.
To be able to put on an event every year for 36 years is a remarkable feat. However, it does feel that each year the importance and the relevance of the funds which we hope you will donate, become greater and greater. Jewish Care is the largest health and social care organisation serving the Jewish community in London and the Southeast. With nine care homes, four retirement living schemes, five community day centres, three dementia centres, a specialist service for Holocaust survivors, social work teams, Meals on Wheels deliveries, Befriending and more, Jewish Care touches the lives of 10,000 people every week. Most of Jewish Care’s services receive no government funding, and each year they need to raise nearly £17 million to keep all of these going. The cost to provide care services has significantly increased.
Whilst the organisation continues to explore ways to operate in the most efficient way possible to manage these financial challenges, it is the support from our community and beyond that will really enable Jewish Care to cope, so thank you for being here today. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our two special guest speakers Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs The Rt Hon Lord Cameron and Lord Daniel Finkelstein OBE. We are incredibly privileged to have them with us today and look forward to hearing them shortly in conversation.
Each year, an award is given in memory of Philip Greenwold to an outstanding individual who has made a significant contribution to others. I am delighted to congratulate Amanda and Jaqueline from Give. Help.
Share., this year’s most inspirational and worthy award winner. Shocked to learn that a staggering four million children did not have the funds to access healthy food in the UK, Give. Help. Share. was established. Fast foward three years and Give. Help. Share. are now distributing food to over 2,000 families monthly.
As Chairman of the lunch, I must say thank you to all the members of my committee for their support and hard work in making this event happen. There are a lot of logistics that go into this day, and I would like to pay tribute to the professionalism of the Jewish Care team, who deal with all we throw at them with good humour and a total focus on making it happen. We would like to thank our headline sponsor, the Topland Group, associate sponsor Allsop and other event sponsors, BKL, Cervidae, Silverstream Finance, Lockton Real Estate and Dentons. And finally, on behalf of the 10,000 people Jewish Care supports each week, thank you again for attending. We couldn’t do what we need to do without you. If you would like to get involved in any way then we’d be delighted to have you on board, so please be in touch.
David Pollock Chairman of Jewish Care’s Topland Group Business Lunch CommitteeSol and Eddie Zakay and Topland Group are proud to reaffirm our sponsorship of Jewish Care's Business Lunch and are delighted to welcome Allsop as our Associate Sponsor once again.
Our commitment to charitable causes is a cornerstone of our values, and we are honoured to include our association with Jewish Care among our patronage and support of charities and worthwhile causes.
This year marks Topland Group's 15th year of sponsorship, and we are delighted to continue our partnership with Jewish Care and support their commendable work. Our
Allsop is extremely proud to be the Associate Sponsor of the 2024 Jewish Care Business Lunch, which recognises the exceptional work carried out by both individuals and organisations within the community.
collaboration goes beyond financial assistance; it is a tribute to, and a chance to thank, all those who generously dedicate their time and enable Jewish Care to continue its remarkable far-reaching and extensive care programs.
We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Give. Help. Share. the recipient of this year's Topland Group Business Lunch Award, dedicated to the memory of Philip Greenwold. Thank you.
of Philip Greenwold
Philip Greenwold joined the Pentland Business Luncheon Committee in 1990, three years after its inception. He was always responsible for securing the award winner for the luncheon. Not only was he a Patron and an active supporter of Jewish Care, but he was also a member of Jewish Care’s Property Committee, selflessly offering his expert advice and support. He was involved on a day-today basis with Jewish Care and with numerous other causes within the Jewish community.
While Philip was very successful in his business dealings, he was known especially for his honesty and integrity. He also had a great sense of fun that permeated his work
and was a keen supporter of Arsenal FC. As so many of us aspire to do, Philip managed to strike a successful balance between work and family time and it is tragic that someone that had so much to give died so young. He is greatly missed by everyone who knew him.
The committee felt it only right to commemorate Philip’s outstanding contribution to this event, to Jewish Care and to the community. In 2006, it was decided that the award should be renamed in his memory, and it is now known as ‘The Topland Group Business Lunch Award in memory of Philip Greenwold’.
Give. Help. Share. was founded by Amanda & Jacqueline in 2021 – two teacher friends who have a passion for education, creativity and making a difference.
Shocked to learn that a staggering four million children did not have the funds to access healthy food during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Give. Help. Share. was established, with the charity’s name serving as its manifesto: GIVE children nutritious food; HELP families in crisis; and SHARE food knowledge for a healthier future.
January 2021 saw their first food packages being distributed during a national lockdown to those children who needed them most via a school distribution network. By March 2021, Give. Help. Share. had received
official charity status and the co-founders had resigned from their conventional teaching posts in order to pursue the charity and a Master’s degree in Public Health and Health Promotion.
Fast forward three years in the midst of the UK’s cost-ofliving crisis, and Give. Help. Share. are supplying wholesome food bags to more than 2,000 families monthly in London and Herts. With 1 in 5 children leaving primary school obese - twice as likely for those young people living in the most disadvantaged areas - they have also added food education workshops to their repertoire. Each term, more than 500 primary-aged children participate in sessions which involve: exposure to healthy foods; preparing nutritious, budget meals; and building knowledge of essential nutrients to ‘fuel’ learning, with the overarching aim of reducing the rate of obesity-related diseases in disadvantaged families.
Give. Help. Share. continue to adapt the provision as they see fit, to meet relevant crises. To date this has included: supporting refugees and those living in temporary accommodation with food and kitchen appliances; sending an articulated lorry filled with donated clothes, bedding and toiletries to Poland for displaced Ukrainians; and supporting children over the school holidays with nutritious snacks, recipe bags and seasonal gifts. They can’t do this alone though; they’re fortunate to be supported by a network of volunteers, collaborative food donors and corporate partners who help to make this happen.
Daniel Finkelstein is a columnist for The Times newspaper. He has previously been its Executive Editor and Chief Leader Writer. His writing is mainly on political and social affairs, although he is also well known for his football column, the Fink Tank, which ran for 17 years.
He has won multiple awards, including being named political commentator of the year four times. He is well known to viewers of programmes like Newsnight and Politics Live and to listeners of Radio 4’s News Quiz
Lord Finkelstein is also a member of the Board of directors of Chelsea Football Club. During his career he has provided political advice to Prime Ministers John Major, David Cameron and Theresa May and, as director of policy, to William Hague as opposition leader. He has
been on the inside of many budgets and prime ministers questions, attended meetings of Cabinet and has been secretary to the Shadow Cabinet.
In August 2020 he published Everything in Moderation, a collection of his writing. His family memoir — Hitler, Stalin, Mum and Dad — was published in June 2023.
He was awarded the OBE for services to the prime minister in 1997 and made a member of the House of Lords in 2013.
Lord Finkelstein is the son of Mirjam Wiener, a survivor of Bergen-Belsen and a grandson of the Holocaust archivist Alfred Wiener. His father Ludwik survived Soviet exile to Siberia.
David Cameron was appointed Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs on 13 November 2023.
He was elevated to the House of Lords on 20 November 2023, as Lord Cameron of Chipping Norton.
He was previously Prime Minister from May 2010 until July 2016. David led a Conservative and Liberal Democrat coalition government from 2010 until 2015 and continued as Prime Minister from May 2015 leading a Conservative government. He was the Conservative MP for Witney in West Oxfordshire from 2001 to 2016.
Every year, we need to raise almost £17 million from the community to keep our vital services going. Many of these services receive little to no government funding. Our Helpline, Family Carers and Social Work and Community Support services rely solely on the generosity of our community. Your donation will ensure that we can continue to touch the lives of the 10,000 people each week through these vital services.
The Jewish Care Direct helpline received over 24,000 enquiries over the past year. This is the first port of call for anyone in need of guidance, advice or who wishes to be signposted to the right service for them. Referrals are made to our Social Work and Community Support service, of whom 1,300 people and their families are supported every year. Our monthly Carers Support Groups provide practical and emotional support to those caring for people living with dementia as well as advice and assistance to those looking to move into residential care. All these services are completely reliant on voluntary income.
Our Holocaust Survivors’ Centre supports over 300 members each year. The Centre offers a programme of social and cultural events as well as Shalvata, the therapeutic support service for Survivors, in a safe and caring environment. Members are able to celebrate Shabbat and Jewish festivals with others who are the only ones that truly understand what they’ve been through. Your donation will enable our Holocaust Survivors’ Centre to continue to be there for every member.
We are looking forward to welcoming Jami into the Jewish Care family. Together as we become one, we hope to continue offering the very best mental health support during the unprecedented mental health crisis within the community and adapt to the changing needs of our service users. 1 in 4 of us will experience a mental health illness or distress of some kind in our lifetime which means it’s more important than ever to be there for those that need us. We can’t do it without the generosity of our community, your donation will ensure we can continue to provide all our services to those that need us.

By leaving a Future Gift to Jewish Care in your Will, you’ll be doing something beyond incredible. Future Giving ensures that vulnerable older people in our community are supported, even beyond your lifetime. Without gifts in Wills we simply would not be able to provide the high level of care that our community deserves.
It’s never too early or late to write or update your Will, and doing so may be free to arrange. You don’t have to be wealthy to leave a Future Gift, and there can be tax benefits to your estate.
