HISTORY OF JEWETT ORTHOPAEDICS CLINIC

This year Jewett Orthopaedic Clinic celebrates 80 years of excellence.

The Jewett Orthopaedic Clinic began as a vision of its founder, Dr. Eugene L. Jewett (1900 – 1987). His insistence that “the patient comes first” has been reflected by the Clinic throughout its history.

Back in the 1930s when orthopaedic surgery was still called “trauma surgery”, Dr. Jewett opened his first office in Orlando.

When not treating local patients, Dr. Jewett was on the road providing care to “trauma” patients in outlying areas from Gainesville to Fort Myers. Because facilities were often relatively primitive, he carried his own portable x-ray machine and fracture frame with him in his car on each trip.

The approach to back surgery at the time was to immobilize the entire patient, using extended bed rest and heavy, unhygienic plaster casts, and applying constant traction. But older patients, in particular, often developed complications, which proved more dangerous than the trauma. Dr. Jewett designed a lightweight back brace to replace the cumbersome constricting casts, and the result was a faster, more complete recovery following back surgery.

Dr. Jewett, during the war years, served as Chief of Orthopaedics and Chief of Surgery aboard the Navy Hospital Ship USS Samaritan. He is credited with several advances in fracture treatment and amputation, developed during his military service.

Another of his inventions, the Jewett Hip Nail, was first conceived in the 1930s, then perfected and successfully demonstrated in the late 1940s. This simple device, like his back brace, made long bed rest, plaster casts, and traction unnecessary for hip surgery patients, and returned them to healthy activity in an amazingly short period of time.

After the war, Dr. Jewett reopened his practice and took steps toward establishing a single-specialty group practice. At a time when group practice was rare, Dr. Jewett invited two other orthopaedic surgeons to join him at his 502 E Colonial Drive Office.

Also in the 1950s, the Jewett Foundation was established, giving young Colombian doctors the opportunity to study orthopaedics in the United States and then return to practice in their native land, where the need for their skills was so great. Eighteen Colombian orthopaedic surgeons have been trained in American medical schools through the Foundation’s generosity.

As the 1960s unfolded, four more orthopaedic surgeons joined the team. The basis for the important subspecialization to come was now in place. When the need for orthopaedic and corrective plastic surgery in underdeveloped Honduras became apparent, the entire staff volunteered to provide their services. Weekend flying trips to Central America to perform countless operations were undertaken with the Clinic team members paying for their own expenses.

At the end of the 60s, the predecessor to the current Jewett Orthopaedic Clinic was fully established. When Dr. Jewett retired from active practice, the Clinic team was well on its way to realizing his original vision.

In the early 70s, the Clinic performed Florida’s first total hip replacement, the Charnley Low-Friction Arthroplasty.

In 1972, the Clinic moved to its present headquarters in Winter Park. The Clinic installed the most comprehensive data processing system then known to further modernize its operation.

Two more surgeons joined the group shortly thereafter, one of whom was the late J. Allen Lacey, M.D., who performed the first total knee replacement surgery in Central Florida.

Both total knee and total hip prostheses designed by Jewett Physicians have been used by orthopaedic surgeons all over the country.

In the 1980s, three new offices (Florida Medical Plaza, Longwood and Sandlake) of the Jewett Orthopaedic Clinic opened to better serve a growing and increasingly decentralized population. To meet the expanding need for medical services eleven more surgeons became part of the clinic. With this growth many of our physicians received specialized training in orthopaedic sub-specialties. This provided patients the opportunity to choose a physician with expertise in a particular muscle/joint condition or injury.

Jewett Orthopaedic Clinic soon emerged as the Sports Medicine leader in Central Florida. Jewett was selected as “Team Physicians” for the World Football League, Orlando Generals. We also became the Team Physicians for the triple A’s baseball team of the Minnesota Twins and Chicago Cubs.

As our Sports Medicine Team developed we began long term partnerships at the college level and became the medical providers for the University of Central Florida and Rollins College. The JOC Sports Medicine Team was also chosen to coordinate the World Cup Soccer events in the 1996 Olympics and provide coverage for many other specialty sporting events. Jewett dominated the Professional Sports Market by providing medical coverage to the RDV Sports Organization, which included the Orlando Magic and the Orlando Miracle teams.

In 1990, The University office was opened followed by the downtown office in 1995 and the RDV Sportsplex in 1998. In 2006, our Jewett Orthopaedic Convenient Care Center was opened to offer services to our patients with no appointment needed.

In 2015, West Orange Orthopaedics joined Jewett physicians to provide the communities of Ocoee and Kissimmee with a full range of orthopaedic sub-specialty care.

Jewett Orthopaedic Clinic now serves the community with ten locations providing over 150,000 patient visits a year. Today, Jewett has 27 physicians, ten offices and 250+ employees.

Jewett physicians are currently team physicians for the Orlando Magic, Orlando Ballet, Orlando Solar Bears, Rollins College and UCF.

C

ontinuing a legacy of innovation established by its founder Eugene L. Jewett, MD, in 1936, Jewett Orthopaedic Clinic’s latest project — the new Physicians Surgical Care Center (PSCC) — is a collaboration designed to enhance patient care throughout the community while also increasing efficiency and reducing healthcare costs. This 25,000-sq.ft. outpatient surgery center going up adjacent to Jewett’s Winter Park clinic on Orange Avenue and scheduled to open by the end of the year is a partnership between Jewett physicians and Florida Hospital, Surgical Care Affiliates, JLR Center for Pain Medicine and The Ear, Nose & Throat & Plastic Surgery Associates. It replaces the current PSCC on Aloma Avenue which opened in 1993 and has been operating at capacity.s“For many years now, we have been the busiest multi-specialty outpatient surgery center in Central Florida,” explains PSCC Administrator Beth Davis. “In addition to outgrowing our current space, we needed a new facility that will handle the growing surgical shift from inpatient to outpatient procedures.”

OUTPATIENT ON THE RISE The new PSCC features six larger operating rooms to accommodate the equipment and technology needed to safely perform procedures previously available only in an inpatient setting, including simple spine surgeries like laminectomy and cervical disc fusions, as well as total joint replacements of the hip, knee and shoulder.

“Outpatient spine procedures alone have grown to nearly 300,000 a year from a mere 25,000 only 10 years ago,” says Davis. “And in the next 10 years, outpatient total knee procedures are expected to grow by 500 percent.”

Jewett Orthopaedic Clinic surgeon Craig Mintzer, MD, believes this shift to outpatient surgeries and the new facility designed to accommodate it will enhance the patient experience.

“Healthcare delivery continues to evolve and our goal is to provide the highest quality care in a more efficient and cost effective manner for our patients,” he shares. “The new surgery center will allow us to do just that.”

LOCALLY TARGETED The new surgery center also houses two new 12-hour recovery rooms for patients undergoing procedures that require longer monitoring after surgery. On-site physical therapy will also be available to help get those patients up and moving before they leave the facility, further enhancing their recovery.

Robins & Morton and Hunton Brady Architects are leading the construction and design with financing provided by Fifth Third Bank and Siemens.

“We all call Central Florida home and we wanted local boots on the ground doing the work,” explains Dr. Mintzer. “The more local jobs we can create and the more we can drive the cost of healthcare down, we generate savings for patients and employers alike, and that is good for the community as a whole.”

The new PSCC is a critical piece of Jewett Orthopaedic Clinic’s ultimate vision and 18-month plan to create a complete orthopedic medical campus where patients can access everything they need — walk-in care for injuries, physician visits, physical therapy and surgery — all in one location.

“For almost 80 years, Dr. Jewett’s innovative spirit has guided us to al think always think of how we can enhance the care we provide our patients,” says Dr. Mintzer. “We know convenience is a critical element of the patient experience.

Davis believes Jewett and the new PSCC are on the right path. “I’ve worked with Jewett Orthopaedic Clinic since 1993 and it has been a great partnership. Their number one concern is always the patient and the quality of care provided.”

medicine opened his clinic in Orlando back in 1936. The Jewett Orthopaedic Clinic began as a vision of its founder, Dr. Eugene L. Jewett, a student of chemistry and engineering at Cornell University, before graduating from

Harvard Medical School and moving south to Florida.

As Dr. Mark Beckner, one of the Clinic’s surgeons reflected, “You can speak the name with pride, because most people have heard of it and say, ‘Is that the same doctor who invented the Jewett Nail or the Jewett Brace?’

And I say, ‘Yes, that is our founding father.’”

Back in the 1930s, orthopedic surgery was called “trauma surgery.” When not treating local patients, “Dr. Gene” as he was known, didn’t wait for patients to come to him, but was on the road providing care to trauma patients in outlying areas from Gainesville to Fort Myers. He was alerted to accidents by listening to a police scanner and because facilities were often relatively primitive, he carried his own portable X-ray machine and fracture frame with him in his car on each trip.

During World War II, Dr. Jewett served on the hospital ship “The Good Samaritan,” performing hundreds of surgeries, and then returned home to develop yet another invention that revolutionized orthopedic surgery and treatment, the Jewett Hip Nail. Prior to this development, a broken hip was often fatal or certainly immobilizing to the patient, but Dr. Jewett’s device dramatically changed those outcomes and was used for decades. In the early 1970s, Jewett Orthopaedic Clinic performed Florida’s first total hip replacement and also performed Central Florida’s first total knee implant.

IN THE GAME Since the 1980s, Jewett’s name became associated with the best in sports medicine.

Established in 1985, Jewett’s Sports Medicine Center was where sports teams and athletes throughout Central Florida turned for their medical needs. Jewett Orthopaedic Clinic currently serves as team physicians for the NBA’s Orlando Magic, the Orlando Solar Bears, University of Central Florida Athletics, Rollins College Athletics, and even the Orlando Ballet and Cirque du Soleil.

Obviously professional and collegiate athletics is a big business, and these athletes have to keep their bodies in peak condition. Therefore, any injury or extended recovery presents a challenge to their career, but the same can be said of an injury to anyone, regardless of their age or profession. It is the skills and experience demonstrated on the courts and playing fields that the Jewett team works to bring to all its patients.

STAYING ACTIV When asked what they consider to be major factors in maintaining a good quality of life as they grow older, people rank living independently and remaining active right at the top. But it is important to get active so that you can stay active.

Staying Active As You Age FAQ I’m getting older. It seems like it’s too late to start exercising. Would I really benefit?

It’s never too late to start. Physical activity is especially important for older adults, and can help them live independently for as long as possible. A study of frail, wheelchair-bound nursing home residents in their 80s and 90s who participated in a weight lifting program showed marked improvement in their strength and overall functional ability. Staying active also lowers your risk of heart disease or heart attack, lowers blood pressure, controls diabetes and helps you maintain a healthy weight level.

What can exercise do for me?

As you age, you lose muscle and bone mass and may develop problems in your muscles, joints, and bones, such as back pain, osteoarthritis, or osteoporosis.

Regular exercise slows the loss of muscle mass, strengthens bones, and reduces joint and muscle pain. In addition, mobility and balance are improved, which reduces the risk of falling and suffering a serious injury, such as a hip fracture.

Don’t you need to exercise long and hard to get any benefits from physical activity?

Scientists used to think that strenuous exercise was the only way to improve your health. However, new research suggests that just 30 minutes of moderate physical activity, such as a brisk walk or washing your car, provides most of the health benefits from exercise.

The activity doesn’t have to be too vigorous. In fact, moderate intensity is best, but even low-intensity activity is better than nothing. While some people may enjoy participating in a regularly scheduled exercise class, others may find it easier to just increase their daily activities.

But I have a chronic medical condition. Won’t physical activity make it worse?

It’s just the opposite. If you have a chronic condition affecting your muscles, joints, or bonevs, lack of physical activity can make the condition worse, or at least make it more difficult to live with. Medical research shows that physical activity is both safe and beneficial for people with arthritis, osteoporosis, and other chronic conditions of bones and joints.

I suffer from back pain. Won’t exercise make it worse?

You shouldn’t exercise during an acute bout of back pain, but by strengthening the muscles of your stomach, hips, and thighs, you can relieve chronic back pain and prevent your condition from getting worse. A balanced fitness program of regular physical activity and specific strengthening exercises is ideal.

5 EASY TIPS FOR HEALTHY BONES BONES ARE QUITE LITERALLY THE SUPPORT SYSTEM OF THE BODY, SO IT’S SUPER IMPORTANT TO KEEP THEM STRONG AND HEALTHY. HERE WE HAVE 5 EASY TIPS TO FOLLOW FOR STRONG BONES

1. Be sure to have plenty of calcium.

Calcium is a mineral our bodies need in order to live. Our bodies don’t produce calcium so it’s important to eat foods with calcium in them or the body takes it from other places, like your bones. Eat plenty of green vegetables or foods high in calcium, and make sure you get the allotted daily amount. How much do you need?

Calcium and Vitamin D go together because your body requires Vitamin D to absorb the calcium. Kids need it to build strong bones and adults need it to keep their bones healthy. So how do you get Vitamin D? Sunlight, food or supplements. Foods that have Vitamin D are fatty fish, and some dairy products or orange juices.

3. Potassium; your natural protector.

Potassium works to protect your bones against the metabolic acids in your body. So having enough helps

protect your bones from breakdown.

You can get most of your potassium from eating fruits, vegetables, seeds and certain spices.

4. Exercise those bones.

Bone is a living tissue that strengthens through exercise, along with getting the right amount of nutrients. Adults and children who exercise usually have higher bone density and strength, protecting them from breaks and fractures. So get up and get moving!

All 3 of these things can hinder calcium absorption into your bones, thus making them weak.

Next time you think about what you are going to eat for dinner, try to remember which foods contain the right nutrients that are good for your bones. If it helps, make a cheat sheet and take it with you, so you know what to buy from the grocery store or order from the restaurant. WAYS TO REDUCE RISK OF INJURY

1. Take time off. Plan to have at least 1 day off per week from a particular sport to allow the body to recover.

STATS More American children are competing in sports than ever before. Sports help children and adolescents keep their bodies fit and feel good about themselves.

However, there are some important injury prevention tips that can help parents promote a safe, optimal sports experience for their child.

RISKS All sports have a risk of injury. In general, the more contact in a sport, the greater the risk of a traumatic injury. However, most injuries in young athletes are due to overuse.

Most frequent sports injuries are sprains (injuries to ligaments) strains (injuries to muscles), and stress fractures (injury to bone) caused when an abnormal stress is placed on tendons, joints, bones and muscle. In a growing child,

Players should wear appropriate and properly fitting protective equipment such as pads (neck, shoulder, elbow, chest, knee, shin), helmets, mouthpieces, face guards, protective cups, and/or eyewear. Young athletes should not assume that protective gear will protect them from performing more dangerous or risky activities.

3. Strengthen muscles. Conditioning exercises during practice strengthen muscles used in play.

4. Increase flexibility. Stretching exercises before and after games or practice can increase flexibility. Stretching should also be incorporated into a daily fitness plan.

6. Take breaks. Rest periods during practice and games can reduce injuries and prevent heat illness.

7. Play safe. Strict rules against headfirst sliding (baseball and softball), and spearing (football) should be enforced.

8. Stop the activity if there is pain.

9. Avoid heat injury by drinking plenty of fluids before, during and after exercise or play; decrease or stop practices or competitions during high heat/humidity periods; wear light clothing.
