WHY THE PILATUS PC-12 NGX CONTINUES TO DEFY MARKET NORMS
In recent memory, only a few aircraft models have generated such high demand that they traded above MSRP on the pre-owned market. The first example that comes to mind is the Gulfstream G650. If you held an early G650 delivery slot in 2013 or 2014, you were essentially sitting on a gold mine. You were able to sell it for several million dollars over its original price.
The second aircraft that fits this rare category is the Pilatus PC-12 NGX. First delivered in 2020, the NGX has consistently commanded prices above its original MSRP and continues to do so today. What sets the NGX apart is that its value has not only held steady, but actually appreciated over time. Early models traded at 100–105% of their new delivery price, and peaked around 130% during the height of demand. While values have stabilized, most NGXs still trade around 110% of their original sticker price.
So, what makes the NGX so desirable—and why does it command such a premium?
1. Pilatus doesn’t overproduce:
This is not just a manufacturing decision; it’s a cultural one. Precision, quality, and longterm value are deeply embedded in the Swiss approach to craftsmanship.
2. Pilatus maintains pricing integrity:
Pilatus doesn’t discount new aircraft. This disciplined pricing strategy plays a key role in supporting strong residual values on the secondary market.
3. Persistent backlog drives demand:
There simply aren’t enough aircraft to meet demand. Dealers consistently have more qualified buyers than airplanes. Thus, lead times for new orders stretch for years. Unlike some of its competitors in Wichita, Kansas, Pilatus doesn’t have the desire nor the infrastructure to wipe out its backlog.
• Only 2 aircraft are currently available in the U.S.—that’s just 0.7% of the U.S. fleet.
• 3 additional aircraft are under contract, all of which were pending within a week of being listed. JetSwiss was involved in all 3!
Here’s what we know:
• There is a 3+ year lead time on new PC-12 PRO orders. Don’t believe it? Call your dealer and ask to place one.
• The list price of a PC-12 PRO is expected to approach $7 million by 2026, and this is before tariffs and added fees.
These dynamics of limited supply, consistent demand, and rising new aircraft pricing will continue to support strong pre-owned NGX values.
We’ve spoken with many prospective buyers who say they “refuse to overpay” for an NGX— defining “overpay” as paying more than original MSRP. But here’s the reality: if that’s your mindset, you’re unlikely to own an NGX anytime soon.
If you’ve been following our data in The Pulse, you’ve seen the numbers. The market doesn’t lie. Our job is to interpret the trends, present the facts, and guide you through the process. In today’s environment, paying a fair market price for an NGX, or any aircraft for that matter, is a good purchase.
Understanding what “fair market value” really means can be challenging if you’re not immersed in the market daily. That’s where we come in.

The 2015 Pilatus we just brought to market stands out—not just in looks, but in performance. That’s because it’s equipped with the Speed Cowl™, a $100,000 upgrade designed to elevate the aircraft’s capabilities.
By improving airflow to the engine, the Speed Cowl™ boosts climb rate and cruise speed. More efficient airflow means more power at the same temperature, allowing you to reach cruising altitude faster and even achieve higher cruise speeds.
JetSwiss Aviation sat down with Jim Christy of American Aviation, one of the founders behind the Speed Cowl™, to dig into its origins, performance gains, and what the new owner of this machine can expect.
JS: Who are you and how long have you been with American Aviation?
JC: I am one of the founders of American Aviation Inc. The company formed in 1985 to make turbine engine cowling improvements to the Cheyenne series of aircraft followed by the early King Air 90 series of aircraft, including the C90, E90, and the F90. We also make more aerodynamic exhaust pipes for those aircraft and for the Conquest I. I have an A&P license and have been flying since 1977. I handle the experimental and certification test flying for most projects and answer sales inquiries from aircraft owners.
JS: When did the Speed Cowl™ get certified?
JC: The Ram Air Recovery Cowling was FAA certified on July 31, 2019, and we received EASA certification on August 17, 2020. We have also received a US Patent for the design.
JS: Roughly how many have been installed in the field so far?
JC: After certification, we started building tooling which took about six months, so deliveries didn’t start until 2020 and new vendors had to get up to speed so sales were limited by production. We have delivered 75 Speed Cowls and are doing 18 to 20 per year. We hope to increase production as sales are increasing due to word of mouth (on the ramp), testimonials from owners to fellow Pilatus owners.
JS: What will the customer typically see for performance improvement?
JC: In icing conditions with the ice door open, the Pilatus Speed Cowl™ provides more torque at the same altitude, which helps you climb out of the ice sooner while still maintaining the higher icing climb speed. In a non-icing climb, the Speed Cowl™ increases the aircraft’s critical altitude by a couple of thousand feet, meaning you carry the normal climb torque higher. You then have more torque at every altitude above that, increasing the rate of climb about 25%. In cruise at altitudes where you can no longer maintain max continuous torque, we reduce the ITT at the same torque anywhere from 20 to 30 degrees C. We provide new power setting charts for Low, Medium, and Max cruise power so you cruise faster. Our Medium cruise charts result in
approximately ten knots of true airspeed increase. If you operate there, the Speed Cowl™ will pay for itself more than twice during the engine TBO period. I have lots of performance tables and charts for all models of PC-12s and am happy to provide those to any interested owner.
JS: Who does the installation and how long does it typically take?
JC: The installation can be done by any Pilatus maintenance provider, and it can be installed at our facility at the Coeur d’Alene, ID airport. We initially provide a template so the installer can check that all the alignment pins and latches are in the normal location. If they are not standard, the installer can adjust the template and return it to us so we can finish a cowling that exactly matches the airplane. If the template fits as we shipped it, a standard cowling can be shipped. When a cowling needs to have custom pin or latch location, we can provide that in a couple of weeks. Installation will then take about and hour, after which it will need to be painted to match the existing paint scheme. That can take up to a week depending on the number of stripes. If you are interested in putting the Speed Cowl™ on your Pilatus, or have additional question, please contact us today!
