Supersonic Commercial Air Travel Poised

to Make a Comeback

Since the Wright Brothers first took flight in North Carolina in 1903, aircraft designers have constantly pushed the limits of aircraft design. In 1947 it was the American pilot Chuck Yeager who broke the sound barrier and set the United States on its path to compete with the Soviet Union for dominion of the heavens. Spectacularly, a little over half a century after the Wright Brothers, mankind pushed flight technology and engineering to its limits when three American astronauts walked on the moon in the Apollo program.

This exponential jump in aircraft development extended into the civilian world in 1973 with the introduction of the Concorde, a supersonic airliner operated by British Airways. Concorde passengers could spend less time traveling

and more time on the ground conducting business or enjoying some of the world’s great international cities with family and friends.

However, due to the exorbitant cost of operating a supersonic airliner, the Concorde ceased operations in 2003. Commercial air travel had reached a standstill in terms of speed. The VIP traveler’s trip from New York to London went from under three hours to a grinding eight hours of flying time.

Fast forward to 2025, and the United States is again taking the lead. Colorado’s Boom Supersonic aims to revolutionize commercial air travel with the introduction of the Overture, a supersonic commercial airliner set to be manufactured in the Wright brothers’ home state, North Carolina.

than

SOUND

“Much in the same way that the Jet Age unlocked new travel options and destinations, supersonic travel will make the world dramatically more accessible,” a Boom Supersonic spokesperson told Jetset.

Capable of carrying up to 80 passengers at speeds of Mach 1.7 ( about 1,300 mph), and with a range of about 4,800 miles, this supersonic jet will bring intercontinental destinations closer together, with a flight from New York to Rome projected to be slashed from 8 to 5 hours; Atlanta to Madrid from 8 to 3.5 hours and Washington to Dublin from 6.5 to 3.5 hours.

Another American company, Hermeus, is aiming even higher than supersonic. The Georgia-based company is looking to develop the world’s fastest commercial airplane capable of flying

hypersonic at Mach 5, or about 3,000 mph. Flying hypersonic means that New York to London becomes a 90-minute flight. According to the company, hypersonic travel is estimated to eliminate three million hours of flying time for those approximately 500,000 passengers who travel between New York and London each year.

Hermeus has plans for a commercial passenger aircraft called the Halcyon, to be powered by its own engine, the Chimera. Hermeus is also in the early stages of developing its Quarterhorse high-speed test flight aircraft, designed to attain speeds faster than the SR-71 “Blackbird,” an Air Force spy plane that reached Mach 3.3 (2,193.2 mph) in 1976.

Hermeus and Boom Supersonic represent two entries into an enterprising aerospace landscape

that has bankrupted companies like Exosonic in the pursuit of a commercially viable supersonic aircraft. If these companies are to be successful in reversing the subsonic slump of the commercial airline industry, they will require innovative aircraft design and engineering.

BREAKING THROUGH

When the United States attempted to break the sound barrier in the late 40s, many test pilots reported that a barrier stood in their way when approaching the speed of sound, Mach 1 (roughly 758 mph at sea level). The closer a pilot pushed the envelope, the more resistance the aircraft encountered. When Chuck Yeager finally punched through in 1947, his aircraft was the first to generate the iconic “boom” associated with supersonic flight. After reaching the speed of sound, Yeager reported an easing of

the resistance caused by compression in the air surrounding the aircraft.

Breaking through the sound barrier while carrying up to 80 passengers in safety and comfort calls for cutting-edge aircraft design. The Overture’s answer is a contoured fuselage, gull wings and a four-engine configuration that accounts for “optimized aerodynamics” and reduced noise, according to Boom. At 201 feet in length, with a 106-foot wingspan, the Overture’s wings are shaped to minimize drag through both transonic and supersonic flight while also providing lift at lower speeds.

The noise pollution caused by supersonic travel is a significant obstacle for supersonic flight. The Concorde was infamous for

disturbing those on the ground close enough to hear the thunderous “boom” when the aircraft broke through the sound barrier. The noise restricted where the airliner could travel, creating more setbacks for a business model stricken by high costs.

Boom’s answer to that problem lies in both the design and operation of its aircraft. The company says the engine being developed, Symphony, does not rely on noisy after-burners. “Axisymmetric supersonic intake, a variablegeometry, and a low noise exhaust nozzle” allow for a quieter flight experience, a spokesperson said. Moreover, the aircraft will go supersonic over bodies of water and rely on its optimal subsonic flight of Mach .94 to generate the speed necessary to further shorten travel time.

HERMEUS FACTORY
HERMEUS DARKHORSE

The Overture also promises the unique experience of viewing the earth at 60,000 feet, technically the stratosphere. At this altitude the curvature of the earth is revealed—offering a transcendent experience while aboard a commercial flight. Boom says that unlike the Concorde, the Overture is designed to run on 100 percent sustainable aviation fuel. So far, 130 aircraft have been preordered.

Hermeus’ Halcyon is built around its Chimera engine. A hybrid power plant, the Chimera is capable of alternating between a turbojet, subsonic mode before engaging the ramjet which propels the aircraft to hypersonic speeds. At those higher speeds, Chimera bypasses the incoming air around the turbine and the ramjet takes over completely,” Hermeus explains on its website. By not relying on a rocket engine, aircraft like Hermeus’ Halcyon can be turned around and ready for its next flight like today’s modern planes.

“By making an air-breathing hypersonic engine that does not require a rocket to accelerate, we’re setting the stage for operational hypersonic flight,” Hermeus said.

Through a combination of innovative aircraft design and engineering, faster-than-sound commercial air travel promises to slash intercontinental flight times, resulting in more time for business and leisure.

The New NAPA

The Perfect Blend of Wining, Dining and Wellness

In the New World of wine, one destination rises above them all: Napa Valley. This venerated grape growing region is ripe, pun intended, for tourism. But a shift is afoot in the valley. What was once a simple imbibing destination has blossomed into something more, something for everyone. The land is beautiful, perfect for outdoor pursuits, with untapped spaces allowing for inventive wellness programming and creative winery experiences. The culinary scene continues to flourish, and new tasting rooms have freshened the wine landscape. The New Napa has finally become welcoming to all travelers, not just wine lovers.

A LUXE HOME BASE

The perfect base for exploring wine country is Stanly Ranch, Auberge Resorts Collection, an upscale hotel with contemporary California charm. Toiletries from Jenni Kayne’s Oak Essentials adorn the standalone cottage-like rooms, complete with outdoor showers and fire pits. Multiple onsite eateries, including a coffee shop, a massive spa complex and proximity to the private-only airfield, Napa County Airport (APC), help make Stanly Ranch a compelling accommodation pick. Wellness Director Yalda Teranchi adds, “Stanly Ranch embodies the vision of the ‘New Napa’—an inclusive destination that welcomes all types of travelers, whether you’re a seasoned epicurean or new to the world of wine. We asked, ‘What if Napa could be more?’” The hotel embraces this idea with its sprawling Halehouse spa complex, an unparalleled wellness destination in wine country. “Halehouse offers

a cutting-edge approach to health, with a focus on training, rest and recovery, all set against Napa’s natural beauty. As culinary and wine culture continue to attract visitors, we’ve integrated wellness, outdoor activities, unique offerings and educational opportunities to offer a more holistic Napa experience,” adds Teranchi.

Now, let’s get ready to meet the New Napa through a carefully curated three-day itinerary:

DAY 1 : IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD

To mix a little wine and wellness, start with a hike, picnic and tasting at the 2,000-acre Hudson Ranch, a sustainable Carneros winery just down the road from Stanly Ranch. The moderate hike is roughly 2.5 miles and includes sweeping views of the Bay and surrounding counties. Don’t miss their take on Aleatico, a rare red grape uniquely crafted into an aromatic white. Both Chardonnay and Grenache tend to be lovely at Hudson Ranch, too. (When wine tasting, it’s best to hire a private driver for the safest, most exclusive experience. We recommend Chris Gilmore with Crush Napa Valley for an excellent private driver option.)

After your picnic, see wine country differently with an ATV tour of Donum Estate in nearby Sonoma County. This roughly two-hour excursion is ideal for spending your first afternoon in the area. A mix of wine, land and art, this unique offering begins with a palate-whetting rosé, followed by an all-terrain vehicle tour of the vineyards and private sculpture collection.

STANLY RANCH

Afterward, sample a lovely wine flight paired with small bites. The acclaimed Pinot Noir is a portfolio highlight. Then, head back to the hotel to relax on property and try dinner at Bear at Stanly Ranch, a spot known for its beautiful architecture, elevated local fare, ranch vibes, great lighting and outdoor dining.

DAY 2 : NORTHWARD BOUND

Begin day two with a visit to The Cheese Shed by Fraîche Wine. Nestled in the hills of Coombsville in the southeastern hills of Napa Valley, “The Cheese Shed is [what] everyone wants a Napa wine tasting and tour to be,” notes Fraîche’s Director of Hospitality Dan Bell. “The experience is private, intimate and personally tailored with a high attention to detail in a cozy space with warm ambiance, an old dairy barn from the 1800s,” he shares. (A winery cave tour is another bonus.) Portfolio wines are paired with a seasonal, local charcuterie board complete with estate olive oil. Bell adds, “We offer a variety of wines from single-vineyard Napa Cabs to Italian Super Tuscans to

Oregon Pinot Noir to Sonoma Sauvignon Blanc which the guests can choose pre-arrival.” The Component Sauvignon Blanc is a delight, but with such a strong tasting portfolio, it’s hard to miss with Fraîche Wine.

According to Bell, Charlie’s, a new eatery in St. Helena 30 minutes from the Cheese Shed, is his lunch pick. “This is a locals’ spot offering very well done classics with a modern twist. Their fried chicken is fabulous,” he shares. And, for a change of beverage pace, it’s a great place to grab a beer at the square, central bar.

Next, head to Bella Union Winery, a convenient trip from lunch. This spot, one of the newest wineries in Napa, has quickly become a convivial social hub of the valley. Kate McManus, VP of marketing at Far Niente Wine Estates, adds, “Bella Union has immediately become a beloved addition to our family of wineries here at Far Niente Wine Estates. The stunning design, impressive art collection, lively atmosphere and range of exciting experiences have all given rise to a

STANLY RANCH
BELLA UNION WINERY

completely different tasting space in our portfolio.” McManus recommends booking the Jewel Box Tasting, her personal favorite. Here, you’re perched within a glass “box” on the top floor of the winery with stunning views of the valley, sampling some incredible red blends from talented Winemaker Brooke Bobyak Price. “But whichever journey you decide to take (there are many to choose from), ask for a pour of the Bella Union La Gemma—an especially iconic wine considered a crown jewel within the portfolio. It’s complex, elegant and very memorable,” she explains.

For a truly memorable meal post tasting, try The Restaurant at North Block, an airy wine country escape ensconced in the Two Michelin Key North Block hotel. There, Executive Chef Juan Cabrera makes California cuisine comforting with open hearth, live fire cooking. Don’t miss the Valley to Coast Tasting Menu, a celebration of the state’s culinary bounty, designed to be an approachable version of traditionally stuffy multi-course meals.

If you’d like to make your way closer to the hotel, return to Napa proper for dinner instead. According to Bell, dining at one of the trendy restaurants in the revitalized downtown corridor is a no-brainer. He suggests one specific restaurant for dinner. “TORC is my favorite and has a wide-ranging, seasonallyrotating menu. The appetizers are killer,” he says. The space includes an open kitchen and dining room, tall ceilings, two levels, private dining and a very nice local and global wine list.

DAY 3 : WELLNESS WIND DOWN

After a couple of days of exploring and imbibing, consider a slow-paced spa day at Halehouse. “I’ve heard the spa is amazing, and lots of pro athletes from the Bay Area go there for treatment and relaxation,” notes Bell. Don’t miss the dreamy, iconic sauna. And if time allows, splurge for the entire Springhouse Regimen, including cold plunge, salt therapy and hyperbaric oxygen chamber, just to name a few. To stretch your legs, check out the easy Stanly Ranch walking trail, a paved 1.5-mile section of the San Francisco Bay Trail. It extends through a pretty eucalyptus-lined row of trees to Carneros Highway. There’s no better way to unwind after a few busy days in the heart of New Napa. aubergeresorts.com/ stanlyranch

Jaguar’s “fearless” rebrand split public opinion and angered car enthusiasts worldwide. It polarized an industry and shocked consumers. But could it be the masterstroke of the decade? We’ll have to wait to find out. Until then, meet the Type 00 . . .

At the end of last year, you might have been asking yourself what had happened to Jaguar. I say might in case you missed the news, but I rather believe I’d be hard pushed to find anybody that hadn’t seen, heard or felt the outrage that swept the motoring community when the British car manufacturer wiped the slate. It removed all its existing models from sale. And came back with this: the Jaguar Type 00.

It sparked quite the passionate reaction, particularly by those in Great Britain. After all, this is a British brand with a motoring heritage stretching as far back as 1935. One that owners and fans alike admired, adored, protected— and felt fiercely patriotic about. It is the brand responsible for the world’s first disc brake and the gorgeous XKSS (owned by Steve McQueen, no less)—a road-going version of the Le Mans winning Jaguar D-Type race car. And then later, the beautiful and iconic E-Type and the XJ220, at the time the world’s fastest production car. It is a brand with motorsport seemingly in its DNA, having competed in Le Mans, Spa 24 Hours and even Formula 1. Or, perhaps, so it was.

All of this, gone. Overnight. This is how it felt to car enthusiasts not only in Britain, but across the world. First, a relaunch trailer that featured no cars at all, but a lot of pink and a promise to “copy nothing.” Then, the Jaguar Type 00—an all-electric two-door coupe with no back window, brash, angular lines and a rear more akin to an industrial cooling unit. It was probably the most polarizing rebrand this decade. To add insult to injury, Jaguar then described it as “a fearless statement” and “an object of desire.”

Therein lies the issue. Before the Type 00, despite its heritage and many passionate fans, Jaguar was slowly getting left behind. Nobody cared, nobody really bought. But now that the dust has settled, we can really start to dissect what Jaguar is trying to do.

So—is it all that bad? For starters, the Jaguar Type 00 is a concept car that will never actually meet the asphalt. It is merely a manifestation of Jaguar’s new creative philosophy, which it calls “Exuberant Modernism” that will “inspire” future Jaguars. Fearless in the vehicles it creates, futurefacing and curious about the world and compelling and meaningful to its clients. And you can see the marks of its ancestors in its side profile—the long bonnet, the sweeping roofline—maybe reminiscent of models like the E-Type and F-Type. Though also perhaps a painful reminder to petrolheads that nothing now lies under the hood.

The concept features lots of flush surfaces, clinically futuristic headlights and rear-facing cameras that theoretically deploy from behind hand-finished brass ingots etched with the Jaguar “leaper.” Hidden until needed. Interesting. Butterfly doors add a touch of drama (as if any more is needed at this stage). Inside lies an ultra-minimalist interior, split by a 3.2m brass spine running the length of the car, while driver and passenger both get a floating instrument panel. There’s “soothing travertine stone.” Woven textiles and tactile wool. Subtle patterns thrown onto the materials inside by the cabin’s body-harmonized glazed roof. And all of this in two exterior colors—Miami Pink or London Blue.

But the Type 00 (pronounced “Zero Zero”) is but a prelude. The first new-gen production Jaguar will actually be a fourdoor GT, targeting a driving range of up to 478 miles on a single charge. It’ll charge quickly enough to get 200 miles back in just 15 minutes, Jaguar says. A car of this size will probably get over 500bhp but it’s not yet been confirmed, and you can expect the sort of high-end pricing to match. So this concept car is really just a loud statement created to get eyebrows raising. People talking. To its credit, it certainly got the entire industry talking about Jaguar for the first time in a long time. But you know how it is . . . concept cars rarely appear in their artistic form. Will this time be different?

Jaguar was definitely “fearless.” Its original founder, Sir William Lyons, believed Jaguar should be a “copy of nothing” and that its cars should be considered artforms. You can definitely see the why behind the what, with the Jaguar Type 00. Will this new path reinvent the brand? I hope so. I hope it’s better than before. More relevant. And more popular. For great heritage never really dies—it becomes part of the story. Jaguarusa.com

Power. Pearls.

PUNK.

The Bold Revival of Retro Jewelry

In the 1980s, jewelry was all about glamor—excessive, sparkling and unapologetic. America’s British Sweetheart, Princess Diana, charmed in more ways than one. The Princess of Wales’ eye-catching stones enlivened her dignified royal elegance. Cyndi Lauper made her mark, too. The singer’s crimson red locks and mixed metals gave way to an ostentatious identity. Madonna’s gaudy jewels complemented her pop-star persona, and “Like A Virgin’’ even inspired a rebellious moment. The goth punk era began with a nod to Catholicism—encouraging a transition to heavyduty chains and cross pendants.

Forty-five years later, our fashion runways are still taking cues from the past. With customization at the top of shopper’s lists, jewelry has begun to take a fresh new turn in 2025. Obscure color combinations form headturning creations that resonate with eclectic types and classics alike. The return of “vintage revival” inspires a new approach to styling. We are seeing the bold choices of previous decades, namely the 80s and the 20s, sealed with a touch of bohemian craftsmanship for a

look all its own. Forget the dainty draw of micro mini hoops—we’re settling into the obscurity of the “maximalist,” or more is more. It’s an era like never before, placing a positive spin on elegant kitsch. Let’s dive into the decades—and the pieces—that are reimagining our jewelry collections and giving us nostalgia.

One hundred years ago, it was a time of significant social change. The post-war decade gave way to political turbulence and the restrictive prohibition era. As difficult as it was, the 1920s became a truly liberating time to be alive. Sneaking into underground speakeasies in flashy sequins and jazzy silhouettes was a thrill of its own. This decade in particular set the stage for some of today’s best jewelry. The most notable one that slipped into our jewelry boxes this past year was undeniably chic—none other than the classic pearl.

In May 2024, Tiffany & Co. released a jewelry collaboration with American musician Pharrell Williams, called the “Titan” collection. Inspired by mythological motifs and accompanied by soft pearls, there’s a polarity effect going on, and it’s quite beautiful, but it’s far from the traditional pearls of the 1920s. Sharp arrow-like edges

MIKIMOTO

ROSEATE

that resemble Poseidon’s trident incorporate structure and fearlessness into an otherwise refined style. These unexpected extremes in a collection are just one example of this new approach to design—laying the framework for old and new in exceptionally crafty ways.

But Pharrell Williams isn’t the only man gravitating towards the softer side of jewelry. All-star outfielder Joc Pederson was one of the first male sports figures spotted with a strand while playing for the Atlanta Braves’ 2021 World Series title. Almost immediately after, the precious adornment was seen on famous musicians like Elton John, Harry Styles, Shawn Mendes and French actor and Call Me By Your Name star, Timothée Chalamet. A 2023 article by Forbes magazine said, “It’s a sign that pearls are breaking their female-centric boundaries into the gender-fluid mainstream.”

The eponymous pearl jeweler, Mikimoto, had also remarked that pearls for men were “here to stay,” and almost four years later, the trend still lives on.

Industry aficionados are calling this time the “pearl renaissance” where jewelry designers are reinventing the lustrous jewel to feel less like an artifact from grandma’s jewelry box— prudish and safe—and more unpredictable and alluring. Pearls with an irregular shape, known as baroque pearls, continue to amuse this year with updated iterations. At the Spring/ Summer 2025 Bottega Veneta show, these pearls took on a surprising green hue accented with golden beads. Other jewelry brands, namely Jalil Johnson and Mateo, put their best foot forward at the show with shape and style to play up this handmade, artisan approach. Jalil Johnson’s “At Present” collection is a nod to

influence with a standout style—14 karat gold diamond hoops with a flashy pearl drop accent. The style is designed to attach the pearl for a customizable effect, or to opt for wearing just the sparkling hoops.

Young designers are ramping up to this idea of bold behavior with classic influence, too. A relatively-new jewelry startup brand, Roseate, holds true value in pearls. The brand was started by a previous Tiffany’s chief merchandising officer. With years of prior experience, The New York-based Roseate claims to have a clear look at the jewelry market and the needs of the customer. “We learned all the rules. We founded this brand to break them,” as stated on Roseate’s about section of their website.

TIFFANY TITAN BY PHARRELL WILLIAMS

Roseate’s passion lies in sustainability and believes that saltwater pearls are the only real precious (and sustainable) gems. With a strong mission statement and a fascinating reach, this brand and others like it, are expected to take the industry by storm this year. With collections that allude to nature, the brand’s whimsical essence lures in customers seeking something fresh in a pearl adornment. It’s airy and effortlessly daring.

While the 80s incorporated less subtlety in jewelry than the 20s pristine pearl, the former decade remains revered in its own way. The dramatic effect of the 80s gave way to the concept of playing up any piece in a collection without adhering to limits. Layering yellow gold curb chains, investing in the thickest hoop earrings, and flaunting statement button earrings were just a few favorite ways to stand out. Today, we are catching glimpses of 80s

influence with a touch of elegance, but it’s not lacking in potency. The Spring runway was brimming with color and extravagance. Fans marveled at vintage Briony Raymond Estate collar necklaces against a classic white button down and blue jeans to make quite an impression. One of the best runway takeaways was centered around embellished wrists. Slim watch pairings were having a moment. If you’d like to replicate the look, we suggest Cartier’s Panthère de Cartier watch and Chanel’s Première Édition Originale watch. It’s a duo that’s unexpected, yet equally polished.

Celebrities have alluded to pushing the limits for years, and it has finally made its way to the jewelry market. Who could forget the Hadid sisters in 80s-inspired sequin hoops, Dua Lipa’s Versace curb chain moment, and perhaps Swedish model Elsa Hosk in Prada’s recycled and sustainable Eternal Gold? There’s plenty to marvel at, but the opulence of these decades continues to inspire us, enticing us with nuances of the past. Our culture shapes the way we wear jewelry, as we reimagine the decadence of each era and make it our own. Timeless trends never fade.

Citizen SCIENTISTS

Travelers Engage in Unique Opportunities to Collect Valuable Data for Scientific Research

Agrowing concern in tourism is the environmental impact that tour companies have on the natural environment. The ecological impact of flights, ships and hotels is not insignificant, and this growing focus is forcing many tourism businesses to accept responsibility for their presence in the landscapes in which they operate and conduct themselves more sustainably. Accountability comes in many forms, some more honest and efficacious than others, and while market forces can move the needle on company engagements, it is ultimately the demand from tourists themselves that spurs action. One rising request is for travelers themselves to be actively involved in the changes companies enact, to use their leisure as a force for good, and to give something back into the environments—often precious, fragile environments—in which they happen to be touring.

Several travel companies have enacted “citizen science” programs, in which guests are provided the opportunity on their journeys to collect data and information that can be used by scientific bodies to make larger observations about the natural world and the impacts of climate change. Whether it be photographs of birds in the Amazon and whales in Antarctica, collecting water samples on walking tours, or recording animal sightings on African safaris, the information amassed by these citizen scientists—whose numbers can be in the tens of thousands every year—can provide significant material for researchers around the world.

HX Hurtigruten Expedition is one company that has put citizen science at the forefront of its offerings on trips to Antarctica, Norway, Alaska, Greenland and Patagonia. Recently onboard MS Fritjin Nansen, Hurtigruten’s Chief Scientist Dr. Verena Meraldi said, “People want to have made a difference when they go back home. They want to give back.” Hurtigruten works on some twenty citizen science projects in conjunction with universities worldwide, and travelers aboard HX ships have the opportunity to contribute to global initiatives like iNaturalist, Southern Ocean Seabird Surveys and NASA’s global cloud observation study. “We provide the means and tools to accomplish these scientific projects.” HX CEO Gebhart Rainer said, “Travelers can monitor their own contributions.” Over the 2023/24 season, HX guests contributed over 23,000 data points to

these projects. There are several citizen science apps that HX encourages guests to download before embarking on an expedition. ORCA, eBird, iNaturalist and the NASA Globe Cloud Observer are all apps that allow travelers to log observations—species, location of sightings and meteorological notes, to help scientists create a database of animal migratory patterns and population statistics.

The Fritjin Nansen, like all the ships in the HX fleet, contains plenty of high-tech equipment as part of its Science Center, including microscopes, underwater probes and a Science Boat that is used to collect samples for thirdparty research. “We are part of the largest water sample collection project in the world,” Dr. Meraldi said, referencing the work HX does across the Pacific, Atlantic and Antarctic oceans. Third party scientists often hitch a ride aboard HX ships, and over 1,800 cruise nights have been given away to help scientists reach their research locations across the globe. In return, these scientists often provide lectures and demonstrations onboard.

Natural Habitat Adventures is another company that provides its guests the opportunity to contribute to scientific research projects. The official tourism partner of the World Wildlife Foundation, Natural Habitat Adventures emphasizes carbon-neutral travel and community engagement alongside conservation in each of the locations it visits. Its largest Citizen Science contribution to date has been through Beluga Bits, a program operated by the Assiniboine Park Zoo in Winnipeg, Canada. Because of their sleek white bodies, beluga whales are particularly difficult to distinguish from one another. When the whales enter the Churchill River in Northern Manitoba each summer, photographs and video footage captured—including those by visiting tourists— are vital in creating a database of individuals for tracking and health monitoring purposes. On Natural Habitat excursions to see the belugas in Churchill, guides encourage guests to upload their beluga footage to Beluga Bits, but also to contribute their time to doing some identification of their own.

Natural Habitat works closely with citizen scientists across the world, on their snow leopard expeditions, and in the Brazilian Pantanal. Abbie Martin, founder of the Jaguar ID Project, said recently during a Natural Habitat seminar that the many eyes that citizen scientists contribute during their visits to the region have greatly contributed to her studies on jaguar populations. “These photos, videos and observations help us track population, and without them we’d be missing a lot.”

Similarly, Dr. Matthias Hammer, founder and executive director of Biosphere Expeditions, says, “The benefit of Marine Citizen Science is evident in achievements from our expeditions around the world. The work of our citizen scientists has been paramount to research, conservation, education and empowerment in a showcase of citizen science’s democratising effect and creating win-win-win situations for nature, wildlife and local communities.” For Biosphere Expeditions, an NGO at the forefront of combining travel with conservation efforts, citizen scientist contributions have aided in protecting marine waters off Oman, setting observation records for whales off the coast of the Azores Archipelago, recording rare bird sightings in Dubai.

In early 2024, camera traps placed by Biosphere Expedition citizen scientists in Malawi’s Vwaza Marsh Wildlife Reserve captured rare footage of African wild dogs—the first such sighting in thirteen years. Hammer said, “This shows once again the powers of citizen science. These camera traps would not have been out in the field had it not been for our citizen scientists placing and maintaining them or making the whole research expedition possible through the manpower and funding they provide.”

How to “give back” when traveling isn’t always straightforward or clear. However, by engaging with scientifically-minded companies, and donating a little bit of time, one’s vacation time can reap benefits that will be felt for generations to come.

Social SELF-CARE

Wellness is no longer a solo pursuit—it’s becoming a shared experience. As people seek longevity, performance and meaningful connection, social wellness clubs are emerging as the next evolution in selfcare. Remedy Place, founded by Dr. Jonathan Leary, is at the forefront of this movement, blending cutting-edge recovery practices with a refined social atmosphere at its locations in New York City (Flatiron and SoHo), West Hollywood and Boston (opening soon).

Dr. Leary, a doctor of chiropractic and alternative medicine, began working on this concept in 2012 while running a private practice specializing in sports medicine. His focus was on treating high-performing professionals and elite athletes—people who needed to function at their best but were often burning out. Over time, he recognized a common problem: his patients would leave feeling incredible after treatments but struggled to maintain their well-being because the social environments they frequented were at odds with their health goals.

“People would say, ‘I feel amazing, but my lifestyle changes have ruined my social

life,’” says Dr. Leary. “Everything revolved around alcohol, late nights and high-stress environments. I wanted to create a place where people could take care of themselves while still connecting with others.”

He launched Remedy Place in 2019, introducing the world’s first social wellness club. Unlike a gym or medical facility, it offers a curated experience where recovery, self-improvement and socializing happen simultaneously. The club replaces traditional gatherings with elevated wellness experiences—contrast therapy over cocktails, hyperbaric oxygen instead of happy hour, lymphatic drainage in place of another coffee meeting.

THE COST OF OPTIMIZATION

Memberships at Remedy Place range from $495 to upwards of $2,000 per month, depending on the location and level of access. Members view it as an investment in energy, focus and longevity, with an atmosphere that blends sleek hospitality with the latest in wellness innovation.

“We’re not just throwing in trendy treatments for the sake of it,” says Dr. Leary. “Everything

at Remedy Place is here because we’ve tested it, studied it and know it works.”

NEXT - LEVEL LYMPHATIC THERAPY — MORE PRECISE THAN HUMAN HANDS

Lymphatic drainage at Remedy Place isn’t your average compression therapy—it’s powered by a $70,000 FDA-approved medical device designed to optimize fluid movement, reduce inflammation and accelerate recovery. Unlike consumer devices that range from $500 to a few thousand dollars, this system scans the body in real time, dynamically adjusting pressure for a treatment that’s more precise than human hands.

“This isn’t just about relaxation,” says Dr. Leary. “It’s a way to flush out toxins, boost circulation and improve immune function. Most people don’t realize how much their lymphatic system affects energy levels and overall health.”

Lying back in a private suite, members experience a full-body treatment that enhances circulation, reduces heaviness and accelerates recovery—whether from workouts, travel or just the daily grind.

HYPERBARIC OXYGEN THERAPY: RECOVERY FOR THE MODERN AGE

Available in both upright and reclining models, Remedy Place’s custom hyperbaric oxygen chambers allow members to personalize their experience. The upright chamber caters to those who prefer to stay productive—reviewing contracts or checking emails—while the reclining model offers a complete escape.

“We’re increasing oxygen levels by up to 200 percent,” says Dr. Leary. “That kind of cellular support accelerates healing, enhances cognitive function and improves overall well-being.”

These futuristic pods, outfitted with ambient lighting and ergonomic design, make the therapy as luxurious as it is effective. It’s a favorite among executives, athletes and frequent travelers looking for a powerful way to combat fatigue and optimize performance.

THE CONTRAST SUITE : SOCIAL RECOVERY

Contrast therapy—alternating between extreme heat and cold—is a practice dating back centuries, but at Remedy Place, it’s been redefined. The club’s Contrast Suite is a private space designed for up to six people, featuring a Finnish sauna and an ice bath, making hot-cold therapy a shared experience.

“Contrast therapy is about more than just physical benefits,” says Dr. Leary. “It’s about the experience—stepping outside your comfort zone, bonding over something transformative and leaving feeling incredible.”

Members transition between heat and ice, guided by breathwork and expert instruction. The result? A boost in circulation, a rush of endorphins and an undeniable feeling of rejuvenation—making it a social ritual unlike any other.

KOHLER X REMEDY: THE ULTIMATE ICE BATH

As ice bath culture grows, Remedy Place has raised the bar by collaborating with Kohler, one of the world’s top luxury plumbing manufacturers, to create the most advanced ice bath available. Priced at $15,000, this high-tech tub is designed for precision cold therapy, featuring built-in filtration, ergonomic seating and automated temperature control. These features ensure a consistently optimal temperature and hygienic environment, allowing for a truly immersive and therapeutic experience.

“This is the best ice bath in the world—hands down,” says Dr. Leary. “We spent over two years refining every detail, from the water circulation system to the ergonomic design. We didn’t just want an ice bath—we wanted something that made the practice more effective, seamless and enjoyable.”

Unlike makeshift cold plunges that require bags of ice or frequent water changes, this tub is engineered for consistency—allowing users to focus on the experience rather than the logistics.

“There’s a reason elite athletes swear by cold exposure,” Dr. Leary adds. “In just six minutes, you can reset your nervous system, improve circulation and reduce inflammation. It’s one of the most powerful wellness tools out there.”

REDEFINING WELLNESS AS A LIFESTYLE

At its core, Remedy Place isn’t just about treatments—it’s about reshaping how we think about health and well-being.

“The biggest misconception is that self-care has to be time-consuming or complicated,” says Dr. Leary. “What we’re offering is a way to integrate wellness into daily life in a way that feels natural, enjoyable and effective.”

For members, Remedy Place is more than a wellness club—it’s a seamless blend of science and hospitality, where self-care isn’t just about longevity, but about living better, feeling better and optimizing every moment.

Railway to ROMANCE

Experiencing Italy on the Iconic Venice SimplonOrient-Express

Gliding along the Italian countryside is a true icon of travel. The epitome of elegance, this historic vessel is engineered to spark curiosity. Detailed in glossy blue paint with golden contrast, the impressive 16-carriage train is a treasure trove of history, but it’s also quite mysterious. The train holds dialogue from half a century, particularly within the famed Bar Car ‘3674,’ where the piano’s gentle notes lull one into a state of quiet reflection. It’s all part of the magic of Belmond Train’s Venice Simplon-Orient-Express.

While the views from the window are unforgettable, there’s something truly idyllic about the train’s decor. The fully-restored carriages have left no detail unturned, inspiring guests with authentic design from another era. The art deco theme mimics the streamlined sophistication of the 1930s, boasting polished mahogany walls against luxurious velvet textures and ornate trimmings. Made for solitaries and travelers alike, this excursion is for the wanderer who delights in the warmth of home. Before lying down for a rest in the meticulously-crafted sleeping quarters, guests savor a cocktail out of the finest coupe and slip into character.

Coming later this spring, this charming abode on wheels has a covetable lineup on its roster. Belmond Trains presents new excursions throughout Italy, including a three-night journey to the heart of wine country—the rolling hills of Tuscany. Beginning May 11, attendees climb aboard the Orient Express at the Paris train station and are greeted by a glass of the finest champagne. They’ll settle into either

the Historic Cabins, Suites, or Opulent Grand Suites which feature marble ensuite bathrooms and 24-hour cabin stewards. As the sun rises the next morning, they will awake to views of Tuscan vistas. A local breakfast is served in the comfort of their cabins with a seasonal menu by renowned Michelin-star French chef, Jean Imbert. Meanwhile, the train makes its seamless journey onward to the historic city of Arezzo.

After a short transfer, the itinerary leads to a medieval landmark of Tuscany, the small city of Siena, where guests can savor historical nuances and quiet quaintness. A light lunch offers a sampling of the region’s favorites, tantalizing the taste buds and providing nourishment before a day of sights. First stop is the UNESCO historic center before moving onto the Palazzo Pannocchieschi d’Elci, a 13th-century palace with views of the iconic horseracing square, Piazza del Campo. The eventful day winds down at Belmond’s farm estate, Castello di Casole, where the vastness of vineyards and olive groves invites a rich sense of ease and stillness. Guests will hang their hats at the calming locale for two nights in a charming suite overlooking the lush grounds.

The romance continues as the day fades to night, when guests step outside to partake in an exclusive stargazing event in the estate’s personal amphitheater. Named “one of the most beautiful skies in Italy” by Astronomitaly, the network

of astronomical tourism, Tuscany is revered for its beauty and allure. Using telescopes to pinpoint galaxies, planets and stars from above, this bonding activity may ignite deeper feelings or spark a connection. Day two excites with a festival in the courtyard or “Festa del Villaggio” where local artists, musicians and entertainers convene for a truly authentic cultural experience. On the final morning, a leisurely walk through the estate offers a serene conclusion to the Tuscany experience before guests part ways and conclude this three-night Italian dream.

Belmond is making room for new excitement by rekindling a favorite route. Coming this June, the train will celebrate the return of its highly-anticipated Portofino journey. The excursion takes attendees along a memorable loop through the beautiful coastal fishing town in the Italian Riviera, landing at the waterfront Belmond Hotel, Splendido. The train’s new sleeper carriage, L’Observatoire, will offer an exclusive overnight experience for both Tuscany and Portofino travellers alike. Designed by renowned French street artist JR, it’s unlike anything we’ve seen before from Belmond and the first time an artist has thoughtfully designed a cabin on board. The private carriage will feature a bedroom with double bed, an ensuite bathroom, wardrobe, reclining daybed, lounge area, library with book selection by French publisher Gallimard, and secret tea room with a fireplace.

Prices for Paris to Tuscany start from £9,350 ($11,380) per person and include a stay on the train’s Historic Cabin and two nights in a Junior Suite at Castello di Casole. Prices for Paris to Portofino start from £10,400 ($12,650) per person in a Historic Cabin and two nights in a Premium Room at Splendido. Both itineraries include an overnight journey and signature menus curated by Chef Jean Imbert. The Tuscany itinerary includes breakfast and lunch while the Portofino itinerary includes breakfast and an exclusive Gala Dinner with entertainment curated by Chef Corrado Corti.

Belmond Trains comprise six sleeper trains and two day trains and run seasonally from March to December. The most frequent European journeys include London, Rome, Florence, Paris, Venice, Prague, Vienna and Budapest. Belmond began in 1977 when James B. Sherwood purchased two sleeping cars from a Sotheby’s auction in Monte Carlo. It was love at first sight. The brand invites all travel lovers to partake in the splendor, as the train weaves through Europe’s most beloved landscapes and unveils unforgettable stories within its treasured walls. Belmond.com

Private Aviation SNAP

A Look at the Trends and Challenges for 2025 and Beyond

After a stunning increase in demand due to the global coronavirus pandemic, private aviation has remained relatively stable amid uncertain economic times. Though stumbling blocks remain, on the bright side, the industry has seen continued innovation in terms of sustainability initiatives. For a deeper look ahead, we tapped multiple aviation experts for an exploration of private aviation trends and challenges for 2025 and beyond.

Doug Gollan is president and founder of Private Jet Card Comparisons, a data-based buyers guide to jet cards, memberships and fractional ownership programs. He notes, “The industry enters 2025 coming off its third-best year ever in terms of flying with a strong end-of-year surge. Private Jet Card Comparisons subscribers project they will fly 42.7 hours in the next 12 months, up from 42.4 hours the year before. What’s more, 95.4 percent of the consumers who started flying since the Covid pandemic have stayed with private aviation, demonstrating that it’s a product customers like, and once they try it on a regular basis, come back for more.”

Jamie Walker, Chairman of Jet Linx, states, “the industry has found new footing after the seesaw of demand and rising costs from previous years.” Gregg Brunson-Pitts, founder and CEO of Advanced Aviation Team, continues, “Private aviation is thriving as more individuals and businesses recognize the value of flexible, time-saving travel solutions. While demand has leveled off after the post-pandemic surge, our clients today are more sophisticated and selective, placing a higher premium on comfort, personalization and overall experience. It’s no longer just about getting from point A to point B—it’s about creating a seamless, luxury journey that caters to every detail, from ground services to in-flight amenities.”

David McCown, president of the Americas for global aircraft charter specialist Chapman

FALCON 10X

Freeborn, adds, “While globally, the outlook is varied, in the US the trend is clearly positive. In the charter market, we see growing yearover-year demand . . . January year-over-year departures for Chapman Freeborn in the US are trending above industry, up over 20 percent, and we see solid trip requests for future travel even into the summer months.”

SUSTAINABILITY AT THE FOREFRONT

As with travel as a whole, sustainability is a key trend to focus on moving ahead. “The continued rollout of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is likely the biggest thing to watch in 2025 due to the progress made last year. There is a lot of positive momentum to continue pushing this important initiative to the forefront,” shares Walker of Jet Linx. Brunson-Pitts agrees, adding, “Sustainability remains front and center, with more clients asking about carbon offsets and sustainable aviation fuel, which is becoming more widely available, including at key airports like Teterboro (TEB) and Washington Dulles (IAD).” He says, “Operators and FBOs are steadily integrating greener solutions into their operations, and the industry is moving toward a future where sustainability isn’t just a luxury— it’s the new standard.”

McCown shares, “Regarding sustainability, the US withdrawal from the Paris Climate Agreement should not hinder aviation’s progress towards a sustainable future. Many Global

(non-US) companies who [operate] within the US still have emissions reduction targets to meet which will require the same amount of focus from US-based operators and businesses.” According to McCown, this includes advancing alternative aviation fuel production, using sustainable fuels and developing aircraft and engines compatible with these initiatives.

“Globally, the industry’s push for emission reductions should drive innovation, create value and generate employment opportunities both in the US and worldwide,” he says.

Gollan notes that in his experience, it’s the industry advancing the sustainable initiative rather than the consumer. “While sustainability continues to be a major push from the industry side, only 29.2 percent of Private Jet Card Comparisons subscribers say these programs will factor into the next time they choose a provider, so from a consumer point of view, changes to program policies and rules will continue to be the most important factors,” he explains.

POPULAR AIRCRAFT

In terms of what private aviation travelers want for 2025 and beyond, there’s lots to report. “We’re seeing increased demand for larger cabin aircraft, particularly for longer international trips. Clients are prioritizing space and comfort, with a focus on the ability to work, relax and connect with family or colleagues seamlessly while in the air,” says Brunson-Pitts. He adds, “At the same time,

new aircraft like the Gulfstream G700 are entering the market, creating a ripple effect on the availability of older-generation jets like the G650 and G550. Looking ahead, the expected certification of the Bombardier Global 8000 this year and the Falcon 10X in 2027 will further expand options for travelers seeking the latest in performance and luxury.”

Jet Linx data post pandemic shows the same trend. “From 2020 to 2025, we’ve seen light jet flights drop by 22 percent, while super midsize grew by 41 percent and heavy jet grew by 184 percent. Midsize jet flights have remained flat. International flights grew by a combined 76 percent across all size categories since 2020,” Walker shares.

Gollan notes that for fractional ownership and jet card users, it’s often about being able to stand up in the plane’s cabin if you are tall. “There is a lot of interest in seeing a dedicated Praetor 500 card to cover the midsize segment— but to this point, we’re still waiting. Challenger 300 series is very popular for the super-midsize segment. Both cabins are six feet high,” the Private Jet Card Comparison founder shares.

Chapman Freeborn’s McCown states, “we are seeing a demand trend towards newer aircraft, in part due to the perception that they are safer [and] more reliable (incurring fewer mechanicals).” He also notes that customers are increasingly looking for larger business aircraft,

“The continued rollout of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is likely the biggest thing to watch in 2025 due to the progress made last year.”

CHAIRMAN OF JET LINX
“It’s no longer just about getting from point A to point B—it’s about creating a seamless, luxury journey that caters to every detail, from ground services to in-flight amenities.”

even for shorter trips, sharing that, “Phenom 300s are a favorite, and Citation Latitudes/ Longitudes and Embraer Praetors are becoming increasingly popular.”

CHALLENGES

As is true almost across the board, rising costs continue to affect the private aviation industry. These higher costs have pushed a segment of users out of the marketplace, according to Walker. “Therefore, demand isn’t as robust as it should be with a growing economy and the bull market results of 2024,” he concludes. “Going into 2025, the industry will continue to consolidate due to the challenges of higher costs, a shortage of talent and soft demand. These challenges are compounded for the smaller companies who haven’t yet reached the economies of scale needed to weather the current marketplace,” Walker explains. “New technology will continue to help the industry find greater efficiencies, but not at a rate quick enough to improve earnings or lower costs for the end users,” he adds.

Gollan points to supply chain interruption as another core issue facing private aviation today. “This has made it more difficult for operators, particularly regarding older aircraft where there are still shortages of parts, which means aircraft are on the ground longer. With pricing stabilizing, operators will also see margins squeezed as they deal with increased costs from pilot and general wages to various fees,” he says.

But on the whole, there’s still much to look forward to in terms of private aviation. “Our industry continues to evolve to meet the needs of a more diverse client base. While business and corporate travel remain a core driver, particularly for privacy and security purposes, we’re seeing more families and individuals choosing private jets for leisure travel—whether to explore remote destinations that are hard to reach or to avoid the unpredictability of commercial air travel,” shares Brunson-Pitts. “It’s ultimately about creating an experience that prioritizes convenience, safety and time efficiency.”

Heesen Yachts’ Project Orion Superyacht Charts a New Course to Minimize Environmental Impact

Dutch luxury yacht builder Heesen Yachts is thrilled to unveil its latest innovation in hybrid yachting: the 50-meter Project Orion. This groundbreaking vessel represents a significant stride towards a greener future for the superyacht industry, blending advanced engineering, cutting-edge technology and sustainable materials to minimize environmental impact.

Designed with lightweight aluminum construction, Project Orion achieves reduced weight, enhancing efficiency. Paired with hybrid-electric propulsion, this design enables quiet cruising and remarkable fuel economy, consuming just 45 liters of fuel per hour at speeds of up to 10 knots—a 30 percent fuel reduction compared to conventional dieselpowered yachts of a similar size.

As the third model in Heesen’s advanced 50-meter Fast Displacement Hull Form (FDHF) aluminum series, Project Orion showcases the shipyard’s dedication to pushing boundaries in sustainable yachting. Heesen has been a pioneer in hybrid propulsion, having delivered Home in 2017—the first fast displacement superyacht featuring this innovative technology. Known for its appearances on the reality TV series Below Deck, Home has become a sought-after charter yacht, underscoring the success and versatility of hybrid systems.

THE LUXURY OF SILENCE

The hybrid engine aboard Project Orion delivers not only exceptional efficiency, but also an unparalleled level of quiet cruising. Operating in hybrid mode, the yacht produces just 46 decibels of noise—comparable to the gentle sound of falling rain. This allows guests to fully immerse themselves in the serenity of their surroundings without disruption. The system also offers the flexibility to change locations discreetly, ensuring onboard tranquility remains undisturbed.

“Building yachts with a reduced environmental impact is part of our long-term strategy,” says Heesen’s Chief Commercial Officer, Mark Cavendish. “Following the success of charter yacht Home, we see that increasingly more clients appreciate Heesen’s hybrid solutions, especially due to their quietness.”

Project Orion’s advanced propulsion system integrates traditional engines with electric power, significantly lowering fuel consumption and reducing its ecological footprint. This

innovative approach to yacht design meets the rising demand for environmentally responsible luxury, enabling owners to embrace a more sustainable lifestyle without compromising performance or comfort.

The appeal of quiet, sustainable cruising was a key factor when the owner of the recently delivered Cinderella Noel IV selected Heesen’s hybrid technology for their custom yacht. The owner and their family are now enjoying this remarkable feature while exploring the tranquil fjords of Norway and Scandinavia, showcasing the real-world benefits of Heesen’s commitment to eco-conscious yachting.

INNOVATIVE DESIGN PHILOSOPHY

Project Orion showcases a bold and contemporary aesthetic, crafted by Frank Laupman of Omega Architects. Featuring a near-vertical bow and expansive floor-to-ceiling windows, the yacht embodies a seamless blend of functionality and modern elegance. Italian designer Cristiano Gatto has brought his expertise to the interiors, creating a sophisticated yet inviting space that owners can customize to their tastes upon purchase.

Gatto’s approach emphasizes both luxury and sustainability. “We conduct a lot of research into the materials we use. For example, we use leather that is certified from the food industry because it is a product that would otherwise be thrown away,” Gatto explains. The interior design fosters a warm and comfortable environment while adhering to eco-conscious principles.

Standout features include a spacious swim platform with easy access to a sauna and gym, a sunlit master suite with breathtaking ocean views, and a vast sundeck designed for relaxation and entertainment.

EXTERIOR ELEGANCE BY OMEGA ARCHITECTS

Frank Laupman’s vision for Project Orion combines sleek, modern lines with practical engineering. The vertical bow enhances wavepiercing efficiency while reinforcing the yacht’s striking profile. Floor-to-ceiling glass windows flood the interior with natural light, offering uninterrupted ocean views, while open bulwarks highlight a harmonious connection to the sea. This carefully considered exterior design

demonstrates a balance between aesthetics and performance, delivering a yacht that is both visually impressive and highly functional.

LUXURIOUS ACCOMMODATIONS

Heesen’s Project Orion offers accommodations for up to 12 guests across six exquisitely designed cabins, each reflecting the yacht’s commitment to elegance and comfort. At the heart of the layout is a full-beam owner’s suite, featuring Nabuk wall coverings, oak Tatumi flooring and a sleek white lacquered ceiling enhanced by sunken LED lighting. The suite’s en-suite bathroom is a masterpiece, adorned with Patagonia marble and polished white Lasa marble, creating a space of refined luxury.

“This groundbreaking vessel represents a significant stride towards a greener future for the superyacht industry, blending advanced engineering, cutting-edge technology and sustainable materials to minimize environmental impact.”

Guest accommodations include a full-beam VIP suite, two double cabins and two twin cabins, providing versatility and privacy to suit a variety of guest needs. Each cabin is thoughtfully designed to ensure a seamless blend of style and functionality, offering an inviting retreat for every guest onboard.

Project Orion also prioritizes the comfort and efficiency of the crew, with accommodations for nine, including four crew cabins and a dedicated crew mess. This well-organized layout ensures the staff can deliver exceptional service while enjoying a comfortable living environment, making every journey aboard Project Orion a truly unparalleled experience.

The design reflects meticulous attention to detail, blending elegance with practicality, making the yacht ideal for both private use and charter. Sustainable materials further elevate the interior, aligning with Heesen’s commitment to eco-friendly luxury.

PRECISION ENGINEERING AND EXCEPTIONAL CRAFTSMANSHIP

Ruud van der Stroom, Heesen’s chief commercial officer, highlights the yacht’s unique appeal: “Project Orion presents a rare opportunity for discerning clients to acquire a superyacht that embodies Dutch craftsmanship’s unrivaled safety and solidity. By summer, Project

Orion will be poised to navigate the oceans, setting a new standard for luxury.”

A compact machinery layout optimizes performance, while Heesen’s dedication to quality ensures every element—from engineering to finishes—meets the highest standards of excellence.

A VISION FOR A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE

Demonstrating its dedication to sustainability, Heesen Yachts is among the first in the industry to adopt the Yacht Environmental Transparency Index (YETI). This innovative framework assesses a yacht’s environmental performance using over 30 criteria, resulting in a comprehensive YETI score. Project Orion is set to achieve one of the highest YETI scores for a motor yacht, highlighting its exceptional eco-conscious design.

“The yacht industry is constantly investing in new technologies and solutions for a more sustainable future,” explains Cavendish.

“Alternative fuels like methanol and hydrogen, although promising, will take time to become available in sufficient quantities and require major technical modifications to the design of yachts. Project Orion is one of the most efficient yachts currently available on the market,”

By combining advanced engineering, innovative propulsion and a focus on sustainability, Project Orion reflects Heesen’s unwavering commitment to reducing environmental impact while maintaining the luxury and performance synonymous with its brand.

SURVIVE, Built to THRIVE

Destined to SURVIVE, THRIVE

From Hollywood Hustle to A-List Marvel Might, Jeremy Renner’s Near-Death Reckoning Fuels a Relentless Comeback

“There were moments I thought I might not make it. But the stronger thought was: You have to live. My daughter, my family—that’s what pulled me through.”

The path from slinging mascara brushes in a dimly lit salon to standing shoulder-toshoulder with gods and spies on the silver screen is a road less traveled—and one paved with grit, instinct, and a refusal to blink in the face of chaos. Jeremy Renner has navigated this improbable ascent with the precision of an arrow loosed from Hawkeye’s bow, a journey that’s seen him dodge obscurity, defy gravity, and, most recently, cheat death itself. Now, as he carves out the next chapter of an already storied career—filming Mayor of Kingstown Season 4 in Pittsburgh, penning a raw memoir titled My Next Breath, and steering his Rennervation Foundation into new horizons— Renner stands as a testament to the kind of tenacity that turns near-misses into bullseyes.

It’s a tale that begins not with a red carpet but with a makeup kit, a side hustle that kept the lights on while Renner chased auditions in the unforgiving sprawl of Los Angeles. “I never really thought about giving up because I never saw acting as just a job—it was something I needed to do,” he told Jetset during a break from filming in Pittsburgh. The grind was relentless, but the fire was unquenchable. “I loved it. The passion was always there, even when the paychecks weren’t.” That belief—that if he kept sharpening his craft, something would break—propelled him through the lean years until a little film called The Hurt Locker detonated his career into the stratosphere.

The 2010 Oscar nomination for playing bomb-disposal maverick William James didn’t just open doors—it kicked them down. “It changed everything overnight,” Renner recalls. “Suddenly, I was in rooms I’d never been in before. The industry started looking at me differently.” Choices materialized where once there were none, and the very next year, he was trading heists with Ben Affleck in The Town, snagging another Oscar nod and soaking up lessons from a director who knew how to wield a lens and a script with equal finesse. “Ben gave actors freedom but was precise in his vision,” Renner told Jetset. “It made me see storytelling as something you can shape beyond just your lines.”

Then came the blockbuster blitz—Thor in 2011, The Avengers in 2012, The Bourne Legacy, Mission: Impossible. For a guy who’d spent years clawing his way into Hollywood’s orbit, the sudden leap to franchise juggernauts was a surreal high-wire act. “I’d been trying to get in the door forever, so to be at the center of these massive films was wild,” he admits. “But I never took it for granted. Hollywood’s unpredictable—one minute you’re hot, the next you’re not.” Playing Hawkeye, the MCU’s everyman archer with no superpowers—just skill, grit, and a stubborn streak—felt like destiny. “I wasn’t a hardcore comic book kid, but I loved grounded heroes who could stand with the gods. Hawkeye was that guy, and I got him on a real level.”

On the Avengers set, surrounded by heavyweights like Robert Downey Jr. and Scarlett Johansson, Renner found a playground amid the chaos. “It was a blast,” he told Jetset. “Robert set the tone—funny, talented, real—and the chemistry just clicked.” But don’t let the laughs fool you—those action sequences were a full-body gauntlet. “You’re in harnesses, doing wire work, fight choreography, dodging explosions—all while making it

look cool,” he says. “Your body takes a beating.” Chemistry with co-stars like Johansson? That’s no accident either. “It’s about trust,” he explains. “You listen, you react, you stay present. It can’t be faked.”

Renner was riding a turbo-charged rocket ship to the top, a self-made star who’d turned hustle into Hollywood gold. But on January 1, 2023, the ride screeched to a halt—or rather, it was crushed under 14,000 pounds of steel. A freak PistenBully snowcat accident left him broken, bleeding, and fighting for air on a frozen Nevada slope. “The moment I tried to breathe and couldn’t, I knew it was serious,” he says, describing the urgency of the sudden tragedy. “I had to manually breathe or I was going to die.” With over 30 broken bones, a collapsed lung, and a prognosis that could’ve ended lesser men, Renner faced the abyss. “There were moments I thought I might not make it,” he admits. “But the stronger thought was: You have to live. My daughter, my family—that’s what pulled me through.”

The recovery was a brutal odyssey—relearning to walk, stand, even breathe without wincing. “The hardest part was starting over,” he says. Yet the comeback began the second he hit the ice. “Lying there, knowing I had to keep breathing—that was when I started fighting back. Everything after was just one step at a time.” The world watched, jaws dropped, as Renner clawed his way to wholeness, sharing glimpses of his journey with a message as clear as it was raw: “Pain is real, struggle is real, but so is strength.” Stunts, once his calling card, now come with a recalibrated lens. “I’m more thoughtful now,” he says. “The stakes are different.”

That relentless spirit spills into every corner of his life. Take the Rennervation Foundation, his passion project turning decommissioned vehicles into lifelines for underserved kids. “It’s about giving them tools to dream bigger,” he says, his pride palpable. From summer camps where he’s elbow-deep in the action to holiday events like Christmas on the Comstock, Renner’s not just a name on a letterhead—he’s in the trenches. “Seeing those kids light up, that’s personal to me,” he says. Then there’s My Next Breath, his upcoming memoir that’s less a victory lap and more a gut-punch reflection on survival. “It’s not just about the accident,” he explains. “It’s my whole messy journey—Hollywood, loss, fatherhood. Every breath now is a choice, a gift.” Writing it was a revelation. “It showed me strength I didn’t know I had,” he says.

Today, Renner’s back on set in Pittsburgh, channeling grit into Mayor of Kingstown Season 4 under Taylor Sheridan’s sharp eye. “Pittsburgh’s got soul—it fits the show,” he says, savoring the city’s warmth off-camera. Private jets— Gulfstreams, Bombardiers—whisk him between gigs, a rare slice of calm in a storm of a schedule. “It’s downtime when time’s tight,” he quips. But what fuels this man who’s stared down death and kept running? “Being present for my daughter,” he says without hesitation. “After everything, purpose and connection mean it all.”

Jeremy Renner’s story isn’t just the American Dream—it’s the human one, redefined. A guy who turned near-misses into near-myths, who took the hits and kept swinging. Binge his body of work on a free weekend or three if you need proof. Better yet, watch him rise. Again.

of PORTO Pleasures The

Portugal’s Riverside

Gem Is a Feast for the Eyes and the Palate

Nothing so becomes a city as a streetcar—the jerking glide and clanking slowness, the bare wooden pews and cyclopean headlamp, the snap and whizz of the electric rods bouncing from the roof. Standing on the hard concrete edge of the River Douro in Porto, Portugal, you can watch the city’s two remaining trams trundle up and down the riverside, dropping off sightseers on their way to their heights of Miradouro, announcing their passage with their clanging bell.

Within earshot of those bells is the newly opened Hotel das Virtudes. Renovations have updated the building, which dates from the 16th

century, without losing the medieval character of the original stonework with reproduction wooden beams. From both the rooftop garden and the Douro-facing rooms, it’s possible to relax with a drink looking out over the orange-tiled roofs of the surrounding warehouses, the imposing Customs House, and the Siren’s Palace, a pyramid that marked the limit of passage for incoming boats until they were cleared of having plague. The in-house Través Restaurant serves traditional Portuguese fare with a twist—deconstructed octopus rice, pork cheeks with peach—and hosts fado music recitals, Portugal’s national genre of bittersweet ballads.

Porto is not a large city, and if you are prepared to endure its hills, it is easily walkable. On street corners, roasted chestnuts are sold from

blackened cauldrons and served in a sleeve of rolled newspaper. The city is also full of unforgettable structures—the swirling staircase of Livraria Lello bookshop, the blue-tiled façade of the Church of Santo António dos Congregados, the spindly Clérigos Tower, the asteroid-like Casa da Musica, the monument to the Heroes of the Peninsular War, a towering plinth atop which a lion subdues an eagle, a tribute to the Portuguese defeat of Napoleon’s invading French army.

The city also offers unforgettable filigree jewelry—fertility charms, holy keepsakes, emblems of maternal love, symbols of wealth, status and devotion. Filigree continues to be associated with many kinds of sentimentality in northern Portugal. As the House of Filigree shows,

FOZ DO DOURO

the craft goes beyond mawkish amulets, to a true testament to indelible patience and skill. The museum’s display of jewelry, masks, religious totems and scaled reproductions of galleons complete with all the rigging is astonishing. The fussiness required to wrangle such thin strands of gold together! The patience! The precision! Just how impressive it all is comes to light if you take the offer to make your own necklace. Sitting at the jeweler’s table to make your own gilded heart with a pair of tweezers and a spool of golden twine is the best way to make a memorable keepsake of the city.

Porto is renowned for its riverfront, but you cannot exactly see it from the city. For a better look, move across the river to Vila Nova de Gaia— which, as any Portuense will tell you, is a separate entity all its own, a place of wine and cod cakes. There, the best place to stay is the Yeatman Hotel, which, terraced like a Douro vineyard, sits atop the city, with each room having unobstructed views of the long port cellars stretching out below, the Eiffel-like Luís I bridge, and the colored dominos of the Porto riverfront. After a swim and a soak in their At the Wine Spa’s Roman bath, an aperitif at Dick’s Bar is a must. There are two excellent restaurants on site, the Michelin-starred Yeatman Gastronomic, and the Orangerie, which serves classic Portuguese dishes like the seashell-like cataplana, tiger prawns and pheasant with truffle.

With Gaia being in the core of Portugal’s wine and port trade, it’s best practice to spend an afternoon at the World of Wine, a refined and polished complex of museums and restaurants. It is nothing if not illuminating: in the Planet Cork exhibit, trace the path from tree to bottle stopper; peruse 9,000 years’ worth of drinking vessels at the Bridge

Collection; learn your personalized grape type at the Wine Experience, then enjoy a little sample tippling to put your knowledge to the test.

Using only a map, it would be easy to mistake Porto for a seaside city. One visit will reveal, however, a distinctly riverine atmosphere—a place of bridges, boats clomping against stone docks, the whizz of fishing lines, the chatter of punters selling seats on water taxis. For a nautical feel, you have to go twenty minutes west, to the true coastal city of Foz. Once an isolated village of gardens and lavish villas, Foz is now an upmarket suburb with Michelin-starred restaurants, beach bars and green parrots in the palm trees. The waves can still be wicked, breaching the great coastal rocks and slamming against the candy-striped lighthouse that marks the entry to the Douro.

Luckily, coziness, in an almost English-cottage way, is something the Portuguese excel at. Check into the Vila Foz Hotel, a new establishment in a restored stately home along the moody Atlantic coast. Noted for its spa, which offers a variety of special massage and wellness treatments, the hotel also has a wonderful subterranean swimming pool. In the Vila Foz restaurant, also Michelin-starred, you are treated to chili-infused cocktails before embarking on a seafood meal that plays beautifully with texture and form—curls of roasted amberjack, shrimp dotted with fennel, sea urchin terrine and langoustine salad. A postprandial stroll along the sea, with the symphony of waves crashing on the shore, makes for the ultimate end to the meal, if not a visit, to this generous city flush with nuances and particularity.

Escape to the Serenity of Aix-Les-Bains, a Spa Retreat in the Picturesque French Alps

Move over, oceans. It’s European lake season. And while Lake Como, Lake Annecy and Lake Geneva might get most of the love from American travelers searching for a waterway getaway, it’s time to look somewhere a little unexpected: France’s Lake Bourget (Lac du Bourget). This dreamy alpine escape is the sleeper hit destined to make your vacation dreams come true in 2025 and beyond.

The Belle Époque town of Aix-Les-Bains sits on the lake’s scenic shore. Michelle Sweeney Lain, head of 1786, a luxe travel agency specializing in the Alps, adds, “Aix-les-Bains and Lac du Bourget offer a serene escape that beautifully balances nature, culture and well-being.” The region is anchored by Lac du Bourget, France’s largest natural freshwater lake, which is often referred to as a hidden gem in comparison to its more famous neighbor, Lake Annecy. (Annecy, known as “the little Venice of the Alps,” is famous for its stunning canals.) “It draws significant tourist crowds, especially in the peak seasons, making it feel bustling and commercialized. In contrast, Lac du Bourget remains wonderfully authentic and less crowded, offering a more tranquil experience,” says Lain. Visitors can look forward to a bevy of outdoor activities, cultural landmarks, upscale hotels and divine eateries. Check out our ultimate Jetset guide for Aix-Les-Bains.

WHAT TO KNOW AND WHEN TO GO

There are two major international airports one hour or so away from Aix-les-Bains and Lac du Bourget: Geneva, Switzerland and Lyon, France. If you’re adding Aix to a longer trip, it’s also quite convenient to fly to Paris from the US, spend some time in the posh capital, then take the fast train (two hours) to Lyon and drive further to the Lac du Bourget region. For weather, the best time to visit is June to September, but we love a sleepy spring vacation too.

WHERE TO STAY

For the most luxurious of weekends, park yourself at the petite Hotel L’Incomparable in nearby Tresserve (roughly two miles away from Aix). Lain shares, “The Hôtel Incomparable in Tresserve is simply exquisite. Nestled in my husband’s hometown, this boutique hotel offers a blend of luxury and intimacy.” She notes the exceptional cuisine at the Michelinstarred eatery and serene spa as key highlights of the pretty, lakeside property. “Staying here feels like being in your own elegant home, hosting a few close friends,” the travel advisor adds. Don’t skip a session in the fishbowl sauna, complete with amazing lake views.

SPAHHHHH

Aix is known as a storied spa town, with a rich history as a renowned spa destination, once attracting nobles, royalty and the rich and famous for its thermal baths and casino. Lain expands, “The thermal baths in France, including Aix, were historically used as preventive medicine, particularly for treating rheumatism with three-week therapeutic stints. While the number of them has significantly declined—only about a third of its former levels—the thermal baths remain a unique and authentic experience.” For a taste of this tradition, visit the Thermes Chevalley, which offers modern spa facilities in a historic setting. A signature treatment to try is the thermal mud wrap, which showcases the healing properties of the region’s mineral-rich waters. “Plan to soak in the thermal pools, then enjoy a relaxing massage to fully unwind,” Lain suggests.

WINE AND DINE

There’s perhaps no greater French pursuit than the slow enjoyment of a great meal. Luckily, the Lake Bourget area has plenty for hungry visitors, from Michelin meals to casual alpine fare. There are three one-star Michelin spots around the lake, including the eatery at Hôtel Incomparable. Lain loves Lamartine, calling it “a true personal favorite” that makes you feel quite at home (albeit a super luxurious one). Another amazing spot on the lakeshore is La Parfumerie. “No, you won’t be buying your favorite scent, it is a small haven of food goodness,” says Lain. She notes the small but farm fresh menu that is sure to delight. Another great restaurant option is Zélie inside the Muira Hotel. “Named after the first owner’s wife, lunch and dinner is fantastic, but go for brunch on Sundays, a wonderful experience,” Lain recommends. Going towards Chambery, “I wouldn’t eat anywhere else but Bistro du Verger chez Marc. It is almost like walking into ‘Cheers,’ the TV show. The food is completely homemade, the waitresses are friendly and funny and the wine choices [are] surprising. Here I always finish with un Moelleux au Chocolat,” she explains.

VILLAGE CHARM

Beyond the main town of Aix-Les-Bains, travelers should plan a day trip to the nearby enclave of Chanaz. Often called “The Venice of Savoie,” this charming, picturesque, canalside village begs to be explored at a leisurely pace. “Stroll through the quaint streets, visit the historic old mill and explore the antique store and novelty shops for delightful teas, coffees and chocolates,” Lain notes. (There’s even a honey barge!) “Renting an electric boat is an unforgettable experience—gliding along the canal and arriving at the mouth of Lac du Bourget is simply magical,” she says. To extend your stay overnight, try Le Doux Nid (The Soft Nest), a cozy and quaint spot right on the canal. Alternatively, just a short distance away, you can stay at Le Château de la Mar and treat yourself to an incredible dining experience at Les Morainières, a Michelin-starred restaurant. “While in the area, don’t miss Jongieux, a tiny village renowned for its exceptional wines, breathtaking views and welcoming wineries such as Domaine Carrel et Senger . . . it’s the perfect complement to a peaceful trip to Chanaz,” shares Lain.

HOTEL L’INCOMPARABLE HOTEL

OUTDOOR ADVENTURES

Due to its prime location on France’s largest natural lake, Aix is an ideal spot to enjoy the great outdoors. “For hiking, two of my favorites include Le Dent du Chat, a thrilling hike offering panoramic views of the lake, and La Forêt de Corsuet, perfect for a serene walk through lush forest trails,” Lain suggests. “Or, if you’re feeling adventurous, try the Via Ferrata with one of our experienced guides, a unique climbing route secured with cables and ladders for exhilarating views,” she says. Other great options are La Chambotte and Le Revard, each offering breathtaking landscapes. After your hike, cool off with a refreshing swim in Lac du Bourget. For stand-up paddleboarding or kayaking, try Takamaka Aix-les-Bains for quality rentals and a fantastic experience on the water.

CULTURAL ATTRACTIONS

Visitors can also dig a little deeper into Aix-Les-Bains, beyond its spa culture, lovely dining and outdoor offerings. “For history buffs, a trip to Le Plateau des Glières, a significant site for the French Resistance, is both moving and fascinating,” Lain shares. Pair this with a visit to a historic châteaux like Ripaille or the enchanting Hautecombe Abbey for a dose of culture on Lac du Bourget.

In a world where overrun destinations are the norm, Aix-lesBains offers a rare, serene luxury that feels like a well-kept secret—one that promises not just a getaway, but an unforgettable, rejuvenating alpine escape.

The

Loch Life

“Chasing the wild deer and following the roe, my heart’s in the Highlands wherever I go.”

Slow Down and Savor

This Chic and Cozy Highlands Retreat

Foyers Lodge feels like a step back in time in the best possible way. Nestled on a cliff overlooking the inky depths of Loch Ness in the Highlands of Scotland, this lovingly restored, adults-only Victorian charmer turned upscale boutique hotel is a very special stay. A welcome beacon of hospitality on the quiet eastern shore of the loch, it recently earned a coveted Michelin Key, one of just 15 in all of Scotland. Settle in to learn why this petite guest house should be on your radar for 2025 travel.

LOCATION

Foyers Lodge sits near the village of Foyers, roughly a half hour’s drive from Inverness, the capital of the Highlands. The original inn dates back to the mid-1600s, but the lodge as we know it today was established in 1863. The Highlands is one of the least densely populated places on Earth, and this pretty little pocket of the region is the perfect backdrop for a Scottish getaway. It’s close to the action, yet still tucked away from it all, so you can easily tailor your trip to see or not be seen.

DESIGN

Part vintage, part contemporary, the inimitable design of Foyers Lodge is a testament to the excellent taste of its owner-operators, Anna and Phil. They’ve created a cozy, chic hideaway indoors, which is artfully elevated by the cliff top views of Loch Ness out of doors. The public spaces at the inn include a restaurant, drawing room/bar and game room as well as a distinctly British snug, a small, comfy, den-like space. In terms of accommodations, seven distinct rooms delight. Touches like poppy floral wallpaper, mustard velvet furniture, antique standalone tubs, sparkling chandeliers and original wood paneling from the 1860s adorn the inn, a master class in old-meets-new charm. It is also distinctly Scottish, with custom tartan, many estate sale and auction finds mixed into the interiors, and bespoke local toiletries crafted with whisky and Highlands pine.

DINING

The dreamy on-site restaurant is simply known as The Dining Room. Plan on enjoying at least one dinner there, where you can sample local fare like sun-blushed tomato risotto topped with creme fraiche and crispy kale or seared Shetland scallops with apple puree and samphire. Set your alarm early to snag the best seat in the house for breakfast, a premier table for two in the grand bay window. Don’t miss the pancakes, a lovely way to start the day. (Please note: breakfast is included in your nightly rate; dinner is extra.)

ACTIVITIES

There’s no shortage of things to do and see with Foyers Lodge as your base.

MOVE

Stretch your legs with a walk to the nearby Foyers waterfall (Falls of Foyers). Looking for a bit more intense of a challenge? Hop on the Loch Ness 360° trail, which winds around the famed lake and beyond for 80 miles, connecting the Great Glen Way to the South Loch Ness Trail. Simply follow the blue signs with the squirrel icon. Want a furry friend to join you on your walk? Book a trekking experience at Loch Ness Alpacas, just 15 minutes from Foyers Lodge.

LEARN

The Highlands is celebrated for its enchanting scenery, but it’s also well-known for its historical sites. Don’t miss visiting Culloden, part of the National Trust for Scotland, and just a half hour from Foyers by car. Outlander fans will recognize this famous battlefield where the Jacobite Rebellion met its end. Nearby, stop by the Clava Cairns, a serene site on the grounds of an ancient cemetery.

SHOP

A bespoke tweed jacket or Fair Isle jumper makes for the perfect Highlands souvenir. There’s no better place to scoop these and other luxurious goodies than Campbell’s of Beauly, roughly one hour from Foyers by car. Pssssst: Campbell’s also has a Royal Warrant, which means they’re a recognized outfitter for the royal family. In Inverness, visit Leaky’s Bookshop for vintage botanical prints and used and new books.

To assist you in planning your visit, please note that for the 2025 season, the lodge will be open from check-in time on Wednesdays until check-out time on Sundays. Foyerslodge.co.uk

A CLEAR VISION Questions to Answer to Define Your Brand’s Future

Irecently had the pleasure of speaking with automotive industry icon and visionary leader Johan de Nysschen for an episode of my Difference Talks podcast. He’s the genius behind the turnaround of Audi and Cadillac and has also held leadership positions at BMW, Infiniti and other renowned brands. I witnessed firsthand his work at Audi in the early 2000s, taking a brand with abysmal performance in the U.S. to a leading luxury automotive marque that competes with the best vehicles on the market today. During our conversation, he shared the importance of knowing what your brand stands for. It’s essential to establish a clear vision for what you want it to be moving forward. Do you want it to be a lower-priced brand that offers extraordinary value? Do you want an ultimate luxury brand or an expanded brand with additional products or services? Once you have a clear direction, you can begin to execute the vision, making it a reality.

WHAT’S A BRAND VISION?

The brand vision is future-focused. In other words, it establishes what your company wants to achieve in the future. First, consider your current brand values and mission statement to determine where you’re starting from. Then try stepping back and ask, “Where do we want to be in five, ten, fifteen years?” This will help determine your goals and build a vision statement that explains the why behind what you do. It should be something that differentiates your company from the

competition. In Johan’s story, Audi determined it wanted to be a luxury car brand that could compete at the highest levels with established luxury marques.

WHO IS THE TARGET CUSTOMER?

The brand vision will help identify information about your core audience. Consider not only their demographics, such as age, location, gender, employment and income, but also their psychographics, which include their values, interests and behaviors. As you look ahead to your brand’s future, who are the customers buying your products? Having a clear understanding of who they are will help you determine a strategy for reaching them.

WHO ARE YOUR COMPETITORS?

Identify if your current competitors will remain the same or change. If you’re altering the brand’s direction, chances are, your competitive landscape will need to be updated. Research these competitors thoroughly to identify where you can differentiate your brand, fill gaps in the market and shore up any weaknesses you may have when stacked against these companies.

Does the product lineup fit? Examine your product portfolio—your product’s features, attributes and pricing. You can say you want to be a luxury brand, but if you don’t have the product substance to back it up, you’ll go nowhere fast.

HAVE YOU ALIGNED ALL THE KEY STAKEHOLDERS?

Johan’s challenge with establishing Audi as a key player in the luxury automotive market was aligning the dealer network with the new brand vision. With questionable product quality and dismal sales, the dealer network had become disengaged, and the customer experience suffered. They needed to help the dealers, even in the face of the brand losing money. Armed with support from corporate and a clear vision for the brand, the dealers made investments in their facilities and began to deliver the experience luxury customers expected. “If you have a winning team that is very clearly focused, knows what the gameplan is, and knows their own individual contribution towards that long-term goal, then leadership’s role is really to get out of the way, ensuring they are empowered and have the resources they need,” said Johan.

In just five years, Audi went from selling only around 75,000 cars per year in the U.S. to selling 225,000+ vehicles in 2023 and becoming a major player in the American luxury car market. It started with a visionary leader who established a new brand vision and took the risks needed to revive it. I invite you to listen to this inspiring turnaround story on the Difference Talks podcast, available on Apple, Spotify and YouTube. Johan is also included in my book, The Power of Differentiation, available now.

STATE OF THE JOBS

The Real Issue in This Economy is Not Unemployment, It’s Underemployment

If you speak to your average American, they will tell you the economy is not in a good place right now. In fact, 56 percent of people believe the economy is in a recession, even though the unemployment rate sits at 4.1 percent. For reference, unemployment was at 3.8 percent in 2019 and 10 percent at the peak of the Great Recession in 2008. By solely looking at the data, the economy is humming along nicely, while 49 percent of people think unemployment is at a fifty-year high.

If you look at the reality of the job numbers, the economy isn’t showing to be in a bad place.

Unemployment is low, and people are still spending money. In 2024, holiday travel was the busiest it has ever been. That isn’t indicative of a recession.

The data is confusing because even though it reflects a robust economy, it doesn’t feel that way to most Americans. Most families in the middle and lower classes are struggling. Buying groceries and gas has become an all too often reminder that their money isn’t stretching as far. It is getting harder to get by on just one job, and many people are working two jobs to get by.

The easy answer to this confusion is the government is lying about the job data itself.

Throughout the last four years, it was common to see the job numbers be reported and then altered to reflect a weaker economy each quarter. Yet, even keeping these adjustments in mind, the numbers are still reporting low unemployment. The real answer is that people are working, but many are looking for a better job. This is an important fact. These people are not unemployed, but they are working a job they are very overqualified for because it is the best job available they can find.

This trend of underemployment began after the Great Recession. If you look at the jobs data, you can make a good case we never fully recovered after 2008. Jobs slowly came back, but the pay and career options were not as robust as they were in 2007. This underemployment was the new normal, and we accepted it because most people were grateful to have a job after the recession began. They may not have been as well off as before, but well enough to live a comfortable life. This has continued as the new normal for the past fifteen years. It is why there is such a wealth gap between Gen X and Millennials, as the Millennials were coming into the job market right as the underemployment crisis was beginning.

However, even though we went for over a decade in the underemployment cycle, there was a fundamental change in 2020 that made underemployment more apparent. With the printing of money came massive inflation not seen since the seventies. This inflation, mixed with the already occurring underemployment, was a bad combination.

Since underemployment is difficult to track, the government doesn’t monitor it. This issue was massive and it was a snake in sheep’s clothing for the last fifteen years that is now rearing its ugly head. If you watch my YouTube channel, then you know I don’t see underemployment getting any better. With both AI and sending jobs overseas, high-quality and high-paying jobs will be harder to come by.

Americans have been underemployed without even realizing it and now with inflation, this is going to be a massive issue for the new administration. Unemployment is affecting some, but underemployment is affecting at least half of the workforce. This, mixed with inflation, is going to rattle middle-class Americans because they are being squeezed too tightly on their everyday needs.

How Americans adjust to this new normal will remain to be seen. I think retirement and home ownership will be two things most affected by people’s lack of ability to save money, and that is a crisis in and of itself.

THOUGHTS BECOME THINGS

Sharpen Your Focus to Create the Outcomes

You Desire

Are you honoring the power of your creative thoughts?

You are a unique individual. Regardless of age, gender or culture, you live moment by moment with a unique set of priorities or values—actions or things that are most to least important to you in your life. Whatever this set or hierarchy of values is determines your destiny, because it determines what you filter out of your surrounding environment and perceive, what you efficiently decide, and what you spontaneously and persistently take action upon. Every decision you make is based upon what you perceive will give you the greatest advantage over disadvantage, gain over loss, or benefit over drawback at every moment in time.

You individually filter your reality according to what you value most. Your pulvinar nuclei

in the subcortical thalamic portion of your brain acts as a filtering or gating center for specific perceptions to prevent you from being overwhelmed and distracted by the vast barrage of external stimuli you face from your outer environment and the actions you decide to take.

If you are a young woman and mother, for instance, with three young children and your highest values are your children, you will spot anything in the shopping mall that will give you an advantage over a disadvantage in providing for your precious children.

If you are a young man and entrepreneur with a new business venture, and your highest value is your business, you will spot anything in that same mall that will give you an advantage over disadvantage in providing for your inspiring new company.

You, as a young woman or man, will both spot valuable items and make purchasing decisions more rapidly and stick to them and take the essential actions required to fulfill what you value most. Anything that is lower on your list of values, you will experience a sort of attention deficit disorder leading to procrastination, hesitation and frustration as a feedback mechanism just to get you to return to your higher values or priorities where you are most creative and productive.

If you do not fill your days with higher priority actions, your days will fill up with low priority distractions. Whatever your highest value is, your life and identity will therefore, with extremely high probability, revolve around it.

Whatever is highest on your list of values, you will spontaneously take action on and you

“Whatever is highest on your list of values, you will spontaneously take action on…”

will be disciplined, reliable and focused on fulfilling it. Just like a young boy who loves his video games will reliably be playing his games. Whatever is lower on your list of values, you will require repeated extrinsic motivation (punishment if you don’t and reward if you do) to get yourself to take action and you will procrastinate, hesitate and get frustrated trying to fulfill it. Just like a young boy who does not love his chores, homework or room cleaning will be unreliable and forgetful in getting them done.

Whatever is highest on your list of values, you will also spontaneously think about, and it will dominate your thoughts within your brain/ mind. Your thoughts will therefore reflect your hierarchy of values. Whatever is highest on your list of values, you will spontaneously and reliably think about and whatever is lower on your list of values, you will procrastinate and hesitate thinking about. Because your thoughts reflect your attentions (what you perceive) and your intentions (what you act upon and toward), your thoughts will determine your perceptions, decisions and actions which will, in turn, dictate their direction, destination or destiny.

Identifying what is truly highest on your list of values is therefore essential and wise, and setting objectives that are congruent to it, or to your top three highest values, is paramount for you to obtain your greatest achievements and

fulfillment. Your innermost dominant thoughts become more spontaneously manifested into reality when you are most congruent.

In addition to the relationship between your thoughts and your hierarchy of values, you may have also noticed times when you have thought about some individual and then, within a relatively short period of time, this contemplated individual suddenly appears, communicates or is run into mysteriously, and in some cases, almost synchronously. It happens too frequently for you to ignore such synchronicities, but not frequently enough to bet large sums of money on them. It is in a grey zone of probability.

I assisted around a thousand doctors over a certain period of time during the 1980s with an experiment concerning the power of their thoughts by focusing on 50 of their inactive patient files. Those patients had been unseen for more than six months, and 20 percent of these contemplated patients (10) mysteriously showed back up in their practices within one week. Synchronicities of running into individuals publicly or receiving calls or some form of direct or indirect communication from them when they were previously thought about often exceed random and predictable probabilities.

There appears to be both a rational reason why your thoughts become things and your outer realities occur as described initially above, but there also appears to be a more subtle, yet to be fully explained mechanism responsible. It is similar to two strings on a musical instrument with resonant frequencies attuning to each other when you think about other individuals or things and these individuals or things then come into your awareness and/or reality.

You have little to lose by concentrating your thoughts on what is truly most valuable and meaningful and that inspires you most. Michael Phelps was noted for his mastery of focusing and thinking about perfect swimming and this impacted his reception of 28 gold medals. What do you lose by focusing your thoughts on what you would love to bring into reality and highly value most? Your thoughts become things.
